T100 world champion Van Riel aiming to replicate 'dream' victory
T100 world champion Marten Van Riel is targeting more San Francisco success having raced to a 'dream' victory in a thrilling sprint finish at the event last year.
The Belgian, who claimed the inaugural T100 world title last year, took victory on the West Coast on the line in 2024, winning a three-man sprint by 0.01 seconds.
Now, Van Riel is hoping he can replicate the magic of that performance as he looks to get his season into full swing after a third-place finish in Singapore.
'It was honestly a dream last year to take the victory, and I'm ready to defend it this year. I love the race, I love the location. The course is, in my opinion, the best on the circuit,' the 32-year-old said.
'[Last year] was incredible, that's what we live for. It's a three-hour-plus race, and it comes down to less than a second with three of us.
'If I would have finished third in that case, I would be very frustrated. But now it's magical.
'That's what you get when you put the best in the world together. You're going to get close races like that. That was very cool.'

Van Riel will head to the USA in better shape than the season opener in Singapore having raced an Ironman just a week before.
But he will take confidence from the mettle he showed in both performances, finishing second in the Ironman before claiming a second podium place with third in Singapore.
'That was obviously very, very hard and not the easiest combination. In the end, it did work out well with two very solid results that I could be happy with,' reflected Van Riel.
'I was just drained the whole time. It was only just in time, like one or two days before the race, that I started really turning it around and feeling good again. So I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm happy that it turned out well.
'Beforehand I thought, 'Okay, I can do it.' But you always think you're Superman before a race. Once I finished the Ironman, I was thinking 'How am I going to do this?'
'To turn up and take that third place, that was incredible. It really motivates me and I have the feeling that I can still build throughout this season and get my level higher.
'If I could already finish third there, hopefully I can play even higher stakes in the next races.'
Having finished with the highest points total across the T100 races last season to claim the world title, taking three victories, Van Riel is acutely aware that he has set the standard for others.
But after a training camp in Sierra Nevada, he is not accepting any excuses as he aims to defend his title with a target on his back.
'All the other athletes saw last year, what my level was and that level was the level that took the world title,' said Van Riel.
'Every time someone does really good performances, if you give it some time, other people are going to be catching up. That's just the game.
'It's going to be a lot harder this year, but I'm excited to battle it out with these guys and try to stay on top.'

Liam Manning: Everything you need to know about Norwich City's new head coach
Norwich City has appointed Liam Manning as their new head coach. Manning, 39, has been lured from fellow Championship side Bristol City through a release clause, after he led the Robins to this year's play-off semi-finals. The announcement completes a thorough month-long search for the Canaries after Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked in April. Speaking when the recruitment process started, Norwich City's Sporting Director Ben Knapper said they would take their time but wanted to make their appointment before the players return in late June."We want to have somebody in as soon as we can but without compromising the quality of our process and of course the quality of the candidate and finding the right person," he said at the time. So, who is Liam Manning? ITV News Anglia has been looking at his managerial career so far, as well as his Norfolk roots and international experience. Carrow Road season ticket Joining the Canaries means Manning is coming home - he was born in Norwich in 1985 and began his football journey at Bungay Town, before joining City's academy in 1999. Last season Manning even revealed he used to attend games at Carrow Road as a youngster. He said he owned a season ticket as a teenager, but clarified he was not a supporter of the club. So he is familiar with the terraces of Carrow Road, but will have to get used to standing in the home dugout. Short-lived non-league career As a manager, Manning has the unusual experience of having had no success as a professional footballer. He joined Ipswich Town's academy in 2002, but never played a game for the senior side and was released after one season. He spent five years playing for local teams in the lower echelons of the football pyramid, like Bishop's Stortford, Leiston, Wroxham and Woodbridge Town. But at the age of 25 he prematurely called an end to his playing career and started concentrating on becoming a coach instead. Declan Rice and Belgian boom Manning's first coaching role was with Premier League side West Ham, coaching their under-23 squad. He has been lauded as playing a "pivotal role" in the development of England international and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice. In 2019, Manning left London and joined City Football Group - a British-based holding company that administers a number of football clubs across the world - one of the clubs the group owned was New York City - where Manning became a Director of coaching and then Academy Director. Staying within City Football Group, in July 2020 he left America and moved to Belgium to become head coach of Belgian First Division B club Lommel SK - he led the previously bottom of the table side to a third-placed finish at the end of the 2020–21 season. Back to Britain After a successful year in Belgium, Manning was offered a role back in England with MK Dons. He led the League One side to a third-place finish with 89 points at the end of the 2021-22 season, however his side were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Wycombe Wanderers. He was sacked in December after a poor start to his second season in charge. In March 2023, Manning was appointed head coach of Oxford United. After 29 games in charge and the club in second place in League One, he left the club to join Championship side Bristol City. A personal loss Manning took compassionate leave from his role at Bristol City in October 2024 after the death of his newborn son Theo. He went on to lead the Robins to a Championship play-off semi-final tie at the end of the 2024-25 season, which Sheffield United won 6-0 on aggregate.

European club ‘inquire' about key Rangers figure as they begin search for new manager
IT'S the dawn of a new era at Rangers. But there's still one key figure from the previous regime remaining at Ibrox - at least for now. 3 Issame Charai is still on the coaching staff at Rangers Credit: Alamy 3 Charai stayed at the Light Blues under Barry Ferguson Credit: Willie Vass The American consortium led by entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises went through last week. New sporting director Kevin Thelwell began work on Monday and was swiftly joined by his new technical director Dan Purdy, a former colleague at Everton. Next, Rangers will install their new manager with SunSport revealing that Russell Martin is on the brink of becoming the new boss. Martin, 39, is in final negotiations over personal terms to take over at Ibrox. He will be a permanent successor to Philippe Clement, who was sacked in February, and the direct successor to interim boss Barry Ferguson, who left the role at the end of the season. Ferguson brought in an almost entirely new coaching team for his stint in charge, with the exception of one man. Issame Charai was the only member of Clement's staff to be retained when Ferguson took the reins. The 42-year old had only been appointed assistant manager on January 29, just three weeks before the axe fell on Clement. With incoming boss Martin likely to want to bring in his own trusted coaching team, Charai's future would appear to be uncertain. He might not be short of an opportunity, however. Inside Russell Martin's amazing journey from living at bookies with an abusive dad to Premier League manager That's because Belgian outlet GVA are reporting that Charai is one of the coaches who Beerschot have 'inquired about.' They've just been relegated out of the Belgian Pro League after finishing rock bottom. Beerschot's current manager Dirk Kuyt's future is uncertain. That's because several reports claim he's being lined up as Liverpool's new assistant manager. The former Netherlands international is a firm favourite at Anfield having played for the Reds between 2006 and 2012. Liverpool boss Arne Slot is looking for a new No2 after John Heitinga became Ajax head coach at the weekend. According to the Belgian reports, Beerschot are now exploring options for their next manager.
