Liam Manning: Everything you need to know about Norwich City's new head coach

ITV News2 days ago

Norwich City has appointed Liam Manning as their new head coach.
Manning, 39, has been lured from fellow Championship side Bristol City through a release clause, after he led the Robins to this year's play-off semi-finals.
The announcement completes a thorough month-long search for the Canaries after Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked in April.
Speaking when the recruitment process started, Norwich City's Sporting Director Ben Knapper said they would take their time but wanted to make their appointment before the players return in late June."We want to have somebody in as soon as we can but without compromising the quality of our process and of course the quality of the candidate and finding the right person," he said at the time. So, who is Liam Manning? ITV News Anglia has been looking at his managerial career so far, as well as his Norfolk roots and international experience.
Carrow Road season ticket
Joining the Canaries means Manning is coming home - he was born in Norwich in 1985 and began his football journey at Bungay Town, before joining City's academy in 1999.
Last season Manning even revealed he used to attend games at Carrow Road as a youngster.
He said he owned a season ticket as a teenager, but clarified he was not a supporter of the club.
So he is familiar with the terraces of Carrow Road, but will have to get used to standing in the home dugout.
Short-lived non-league career
As a manager, Manning has the unusual experience of having had no success as a professional footballer.
He joined Ipswich Town's academy in 2002, but never played a game for the senior side and was released after one season.
He spent five years playing for local teams in the lower echelons of the football pyramid, like Bishop's Stortford, Leiston, Wroxham and Woodbridge Town.
But at the age of 25 he prematurely called an end to his playing career and started concentrating on becoming a coach instead.
Declan Rice and Belgian boom
Manning's first coaching role was with Premier League side West Ham, coaching their under-23 squad.
He has been lauded as playing a "pivotal role" in the development of England international and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.
In 2019, Manning left London and joined City Football Group - a British-based holding company that administers a number of football clubs across the world - one of the clubs the group owned was New York City - where Manning became a Director of coaching and then Academy Director.
Staying within City Football Group, in July 2020 he left America and moved to Belgium to become head coach of Belgian First Division B club Lommel SK - he led the previously bottom of the table side to a third-placed finish at the end of the 2020–21 season.
Back to Britain
After a successful year in Belgium, Manning was offered a role back in England with MK Dons.
He led the League One side to a third-place finish with 89 points at the end of the 2021-22 season, however his side were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Wycombe Wanderers.
He was sacked in December after a poor start to his second season in charge.
In March 2023, Manning was appointed head coach of Oxford United. After 29 games in charge and the club in second place in League One, he left the club to join Championship side Bristol City.
A personal loss
Manning took compassionate leave from his role at Bristol City in October 2024 after the death of his newborn son Theo.
He went on to lead the Robins to a Championship play-off semi-final tie at the end of the 2024-25 season, which Sheffield United won 6-0 on aggregate.

Founder retires as Moray engineering firm with 125 staff acquired

One of Moray's most prominent business figures has retired following the sale of his company in a major acquisition deal. Alan James, 71, has stepped down from AJ Engineering (AJE), the Forres-based firm he founded in 1999. The business, which employs 125 people across sites in Forres, Fort William and Carlisle, has been acquired by global environmental and engineering leader RSK Group. The deal includes AJE's sister company NEWCo, based in Fort William. The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, brings AJE into a group of over 200 companies worldwide. Graham Alexander, who has worked with AJE for 11 years, will take over as group managing director. Neil Worsdall will remain general manager of NEWCo. Mr James said the deal secures the future of the companies and positions them well for further growth. He will remain for a short handover before fully retiring. He expressed confidence in the next phase of the business. 'By joining a larger organisation, AJE and NEWCo will benefit from increased new business opportunities, a broad range of knowledge sharing, and working in partnership and collaboration with the other RSK Group businesses on a wide range of varied and inclusive projects,' he said. 'This truly marks the start of exciting times for all at AJ's and NEWCo.' Mr James began his career in 1971 as an apprentice fabricator welder at William Reid Engineering in Forres. He progressed into project management and later earned an MSc from Aberdeen University. It was when he was made redundant at 45 following the closure of William Reid in 1999, that he took the leap to set up his own firm. He launched AJ Engineering with just one employee in a rented workshop at Greshop Industrial Estate in Forres. 'Starting out I remember working eight straight weeks – all hours, Saturdays and Sundays too,' he recalls. 'It's been a lot of hard work building up the company, but very satisfying.' Over the past 26 years, AJE has taken on major projects across the UK and beyond. Highlights include infrastructure support at SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland and ongoing work at Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. Mr James says he has always placed a strong emphasis on training and development: 'I started as an apprentice myself,' he said. 'Investing in young people has always been important to me. 'The intention is that for our staff here in Forres, Fort William and Carlisle, it's very much business as usual. 'I am well over retirement age, and making sure that the company that I have built, with lots of support along the way, continues to grow from strength to strength has been very important to me.' Outside his role at AJE, Mr James has been active in the Moray community. He is Depute Lieutenant of Moray and a director of Forres Events Limited. He helped organise the Piping at Forres festival and last year's Grant Park 100 celebration. RSK Group said acquiring AJE and NEWCo will strengthen its UK engineering base, particularly in water, energy and infrastructure.

A second player has been banned, while a third avoided punishment ACE BANNED Former Man Utd and Chelsea star Nemanja Matic slapped with football ban after taping over LGBTQ+ logo NEMANJA MATIC has received a ban after he covered an LGBTQ+ campaign logo on his kit with tape. The logo was part of Ligue 1's annual campaign against homophobia which sees every club shirt adorned with the rainbow design. Matic wasn't the only player to cover the logo, with Le Havre forward Ahmed Hassan also covering the sleeve design with tape. According to Belgian news outlet HLN, both Matic and Hassan have been handed two-match bans by the French Football Federation as a result of their actions. The pair will also reportedly have to undergo an awareness campaign about homophobia in football. Matic is believed to be a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Hassan is Muslim. A third player, Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed, has escaped punishment after refusing to play with the logo. Mohamed, who is also a practicing Muslim, chose not to play in the final match of the season rather than covering the logo up. 4 Le Havre forward Ahmed Hassan (right) also covered up the logo Credit: Getty 4 Mostafa Mohamed chose not to play with the logo on his sleeve Credit: AFP Mohamed cited his 'values' for not playing in Nantes 3-0 win over Montpellier. He wrote on social media: "Living together also means recognising that this diversity can be expressed differently from one person to another. Nemanja Matic brands Andre Onana 'one of worst keepers in Man Utd HISTORY' in savage response to goalie "I believe in mutual respect - the respect we owe others, but also the respect we owe ourselves and our beliefs. "As for me, there are deep-rooted values tied to my heritage and my faith, which make participating in this initiative difficult." The actions of the Matic, Hassan and Mohamed prompted France's sports minister Marie Basacq to issue a statement after the final day of the Ligue 1 campaign. Barsacq said: "Football has a massive platform, and the [French Football] Federation is determined to put this issue on the clubs' and supporters' agenda. 'Homophobic insults and behaviour are no longer acceptable. "Society has evolved, and the language in football must change with it. There's a full range of sanctions available, and they must be applied.' Although rare, some players have spoken out in support of the LGBTQ+ community in the past. Speaking six years ago, Atletico Madrid and French international Antoine Griezmann said: "If a gay player wants to come out, he might not have all the France players with him, but he will have me.'
