Construction begins on major County Road 27 widening project
Construction is officially underway on County Road 27 - a key north-south route for both commuters and residents alike.
Back in 2014, Simcoe County's Transportation Master Plan flagged the need to widen County Road 27 from County Road 21 (Innisfil Beach Road) to County Road 90 from two lanes to four lanes.
Improvements were also considered along County Road 27 and County Road 90 to help ease northbound left-turn delays.

'These improvements are necessary to support the arterial function of this primary travel corridor and accommodate planned growth in adjacent areas in both the City of Barrie and Town of Innisfil,' the county stated online.
This project will include widening and resurfacing the roadway to improve traffic flow, upgrading drainage and watercourse crossings, and reviewing roadside lighting and safety.
Key intersections also being reviewed for possible improvements include; County Road 90, Ardagh Road, and Essa Road.

This plan is part of the broader Transportation Master Plan update, which identified County Road 27 as a priority corridor due to growing pressure from regional development and rising traffic volumes.
In a study provided by the county, findings showed that this major road could become congested over time.
CTV News reached out to the County of Simcoe for a timeframe on the road project and what this phase means for commuters.

Girl Guides of Canada suspending all travel to U.S. in response to Trump border policies
A Girl Guide holds up a keychain she made during an activity at the 100th year celebration of Girl Guides of Canada on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Tuesday, March. 9, 2010. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Pawel Dwulit Girl Guides of Canada is suspending all group travel to the United States in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's border policies, CTV News has confirmed. The break will go into effect starting next month, the organization said, and will include both previously approved and future trips. 'This decision is rooted in our commitment to inclusivity and the safety of all our members,' wrote the Girl Guides of Canada media team in an email to CTV News. 'It was prompted by the recent restrictions put on equal entry into the United States, as some members may hold citizenship from non-Canadian countries and could be impacted by the restrictions.' In June, the Trump administration issued travel bans to more than a dozen countries, barring entry into the U.S. to citizens of those places. The policy is an expansion of the travel ban Trump issued during his first term, which at the time applied to fewer countries. Travel bans are now in effect for 19 countries. Girl Guides is an organization for young girls and teenagers focused on learning and development, friendship and community building. 'At Girl Guides of Canada, we prioritize creating a safe, inclusive and accepting environment for all members,' the organization also said. 'These values extend to the travel experiences we offer.' The organization did not say how long the moratorium will remain in place. The move comes amid an ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States, and a sharp decrease in travel to the United States by Canadians overall. According to Statistics Canada, Canada-U.S. return trips by automobile were down by more than 38 per cent year-over-year in May, and return trips by air were down more than 24 per cent. That's after five consecutive months of sharp decreases, according to the agency. Scouts Canada — which is separate from Girl Guides but is rooted in the same founding principles — is continuing travel to the U.S., but is monitoring 'recent developments surrounding U.S. entry policies and their potential impact on our members,' according to the group. 'We strongly encourage our members to exercise caution and plan thoughtfully,' a spokesperson for the organization wrote in an email to CTV News. 'Our approach remains rooted in our commitment to ensuring safe, inclusive, and equitable experiences for all youth and volunteers in our programs, at home and abroad,' they also wrote. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Peter McCabe) The Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge is expected to be completely closed to traffic during the weekend of Aug. 15 to 18, according to Quebec's Transport Ministry. 'This closure is necessary to install support beams on the structure,' it stated. From Friday, Aug. 15, at 11:59 p.m. to Monday, Aug. 18, at 5 a.m., the following closures are expected: Complete closure of Highway 40 westbound between Exit 41 – Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue/des Anciens-Combattants Boulevard/Autoroute 20 westbound/Île Perrot and the entrance from Saint-Charles Avenue. The westbound access to Senneville Road will be maintained for local traffic Complete closure of Highway 40 eastbound between Exit 35 – Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac/Vaudreuil-Dorion/Saint-Charles Avenue and the entrance from des Anciens-Combattants Boulevard. The ramp leading from Highway 40 eastbound to the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge will be closed at the interchange with Highway 30. Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge Once the closures end, the ministry explains that four lanes (two in each direction) will be available on the bridge. Heavy vehicles are prohibited from using the right lane in each direction, and overloaded vehicles are prohibited at all times on the structure. Detour routes should be marked with temporary signs, and motorists are advised to use highways 20 and 30. 'During this closure, the public is encouraged to use public transportation and take advantage of the mitigation measures in place,' the ministry notes. 'Tolls will be suspended in both directions on Highway 30 to provide an additional option. The ministry recommends that road users who must travel in the area allow extra time to reach their destination.' Work may be postponed, extended or cancelled due to operational constraints or adverse weather conditions.

Here are 10 cool photos of the Gordie Howe bridge — Now let's see yours
When it will open is still in question. But it's already changed the skyline and landscape of Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich. The Gordie Howe International Bridge can be seen from kilometres away, and depending on your viewpoint it can sometimes appear to be a completely different structure. A recent report says the span might not open until sometime in 2026, however, the Canadian authority overseeing its construction and operation says it's too early to offer a specific date on when cars, trucks, bicycles and pedestrians will be allowed to cross. Shovels hit the ground on the project in the summer of 2018. It was originally slated to be open by the end of 2024. That was since pushed back until the fall of 2025 — a timeline which also now remains uncertain. What people can do in the meantime, however, is continue to marvel at its size and modern design of the cable-stayed crossing. The CBC's Michael Evans has compiled his top 10 photos from across the Windsor-area showing the bridge from a variety of vantage points in August 2025. Show us your favourite pic of the bridge We'd like to see your favourite photos that you've taken of the structure — whether it's from the Canadian or American side.
