Dubai extradites two men to France on fraud and drugs charges

The National25-07-2025
Two men have been arrested by Dubai Police and extradited to France to face fraud and drug trafficking charges in their home country.
The suspects were detained after red notices were issued against them by Interpol and the EU's Europol, the Dubai force said on Friday.
The two men were handed over to authorities in France, where they are accused of serious crimes including attempted fraud and trafficking narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
'Search and investigation teams launched a tracking operation based on red notices,' Dubai Police said in a statement. 'The suspects and their homes were identified and monitored until they were arrested.'
The force said it was committed to supporting a strong global security network to combat crime.
The International Co-operation Department at the UAE's Ministry of Justice received the arrest warrants and handed the suspects over to France, in conjunction with the emirate's police and public prosecution.
'These suspects were involved in organised international crimes including murder, money laundering, armed robbery, drug trafficking and crime gang leaders,' the force added.
The latest operation brings the number of wanted suspects extradited to France by Dubai Police to 10 in 2025.
This week, The National reported how a former Molodovan justice minister arrested in the UAE was extradited to France to face fraud charges.
Vitalie Pirlog was arrested in June at the request of French authorities who had asked Interpol to issue a red notice against him, state news agency Wam reported.
On July 13, the force arrested and extradited three alleged Belgian crime gang leaders facing human and drug trafficking charges in their home country.
The three suspects – Mathias Akyazili, Giorgi Faes and Othman El Ballouti – were listed in the most-wanted category by Interpol and Europol.

South Africa: Justice Committee Chairperson Condemns Killing of Eastern Cape Prosecutor

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Xola Nqola, has expressed his deepest shock and outrage at the cold-blooded murder of public prosecutor Ms Tracy Brown in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, yesterday. 'This is indeed a tragedy where the protectors of our criminal justice system are not safe anymore. This is unacceptable and no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits to book,' he said. According to reports, Ms Brown was ambushed and shot multiple times by four armed assailants while sitting in her car, in full view of her partner and child. 'The brutal nature of this assassination-style killing is deeply disturbing and represents a direct attack on the justice system and those who serve it with dedication and courage,' emphasised the Chairperson. This incident follows the tragic murder of Ms Elona Sombulula, a court official at the Engcobo Magistrates Court, in April this year. The committee is gravely concerned by what appears to be a pattern of targeted violence against officials within the justice sector. Mr Nqola stated: 'The murder of Ms Brown is not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues, but an attack on the rule of law in South Africa. Prosecutors serve at the forefront of our fight against crime and corruption. When they are targeted, it threatens the foundations of our constitutional democracy. 'The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Brown's loved ones and colleagues during this painful time. The committee also calls on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and face the full might of the law.' He said the portfolio committee will engage with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on urgent measures to enhance the safety and security of prosecutors and court officials across the country. UAE authorities warn residents against online fraud, phishing attempts via phone

UAE residents are urged to exercise caution when dealing with phone messages or calls from unknown sources, as per a new note issued by the country's Cybersecurity Council and Abu Dhabi Police on Friday. Authorities called on the public to be mindful when receiving these calls or messages that can be gateways to phishing attempts or online fraud, which has become one of the growing challenges facing the community. "This is particularly evident with the diversity of its forms, the sophistication of its methods, the evolution of digital tools... Online fraud is no longer limited to traditional methods, but now exploits digital services, smart applications, and online networks to lure victims in ways that are often difficult to detect until after the crime has been committed," the UAE Cybersecurity Council said in a statement. Last month, a Khaleej Times investigation uncovered an online trading syndicate in the UAE operating a high-stakes scam through fraudulent call centres, fake trading platforms, and shell companies set up to siphon investor funds. For its part, Abu Dhabi Police warned the public against online fraud attempts, highlighting some methods of deception, including fake advertisements appearing in search engines, fraudulent job offers, and real estate scams. They stressed the importance of using approved applications when making purchases or requesting services. Recommendations Authorities shared tips, saying the public was urged to: Verify the authenticity of electronic links Avoid sharing banking or personal information with untrusted parties Rely only on official applications approved by government entities or available on trusted app stores such as the App Store and Google Play Do not share confidential information with anyone, whether related to bank accounts, cards, online banking passwords, ATM PINs, or the security code (CCV), or other sensitive details. Avoid clicking direct links sent via personal messages Refuse to install programmes under false pretences Never share two-factor authentication codes Review app permissions before installation Deny unnecessary access, such as to messages or administrative settings Continuously update operating systems to fix security gaps, and using certified antivirus software. Apart from these precautionary measures, UAE residents are advised to immediately report any fraud attempts through the Aman Service or via the contact centre at 8002626, SMS at 2828, the Abu Dhabi Police smart app, the email aman@ or the 'Police at Your Phone' service.
