This narrow definition of leadership has long devalued traits like empathy, care, and emotional intelligence, often deemed 'soft skills.' This overemphasis on masculine leadership leaves many leaders worrying about expressing anything deemed feminine in the workplace—especially women leaders in male-dominated environments concerned about being taken seriously.
Studies show that, while effective leaders display traditionally 'masculine' qualities like confidence, strategic thinking, and decisiveness, they also display 'feminine' traits like collaboration, empathy, resilience, and communication.

How Caring Boosts Engagement, Retention, and Growth
Care isn't a 'soft skill.' It's a strategic one. In 2024, employee engagement dropped to 21%, only the second decline in more than a decade (the other during the COVID-19 pandemic). This disengagement—70% of which is tied to a person's manager—is estimated to cost the global economy over $400 billion in lost productivity last year. Leaders who can engage their teams will shape the future of work, and all they have to do is go back to the basics: caring for people.
Employees who feel cared for are three times more likely to be engaged, 70% less likely to experience burnout, and 36% more likely to report thriving outside of work. Yet only 25% of employees feel their manager genuinely cares about their well-being.

Care also drives retention. Nearly 75 % of employees say they want a manager who leads with empathy and support. When they have one, they're 70% less likely to be looking for a new job.
Pete Stavros, co-head of global private equity at KKR, recently brought the head of Stanford's Neuroscience Lab Jamil Zaki in to stress test Stavros's observation that the best-performing CEOs in KKR's portfolio were the most empathetic. The results? The CEOs who indexed highest on empathy had retention and engagement rates 1.5 to more than 2 times stronger than the benchmark.
Why Deep Listening Builds Trust, Fuels Innovation, and Enhances Belonging
Great leadership is built on deep listening. When managers are attentive and communicate openly, they drive higher engagement, stronger retention, and better team performance. But too many leaders still miss the mark: 86% of employees say not everyone in their organization is fairly heard—and more than 60% say their leaders have ignored their voice.

When she does so, she's open about the fact that she doesn't have all the answers. When leaders model vulnerability like this, their employees are 5.3 times more likely to trust them.
Being vulnerable is also proven to boost creativity and innovation. These key benefits help explain how Bolhous has grown CNG from a $50 million valuation in 2010 to a present-day valuation of $5 billion. In addition to vulnerability, the two additional leadership skills Bolhous ties to her success: care and listening.
The Holistic Leadership Approach
Holistic leaders don't rely on a single trait. Last week's country-specific levies varying from 10% to 50% landed with a one-two punch: additional red tape issued by Customs and Border Protection, and a need to increase customs bonds — guarantees that companies must buy from surety providers to ensure the government receives its tariff revenue, other taxes and any potential penalties. Big firms often have in-house resources to handle such administrative changes and costs, but compliance and forecasting in the new tariff regime are 'where the smaller companies are really struggling,' said Erin Williamson, vice president of US customs brokerage at Levallois-Perret, France-based Geodis, a leading global logistics firm. 'They may not have that internal compliance group or the infrastructure to really sit back and say, 'OK, this is going to be the impact to us. How do we pivot?'' Williamson said in an interview Friday. The goods they bought from abroad were worth more than $868 billion in 2023. That works out to about $856,000 per firm a year. Consumer Prices Through June, businesses in the US absorbed more than half the cost of Trump's tariffs, with the rest picked up by foreign exporters and American consumers, according to a research note Sunday from Goldman Sachs economists. In coming months, the burden will shift away from importers and the share shouldered by consumers will rise to 67%, it said. Until then, the National Retail Federation is echoing the US Chamber's concerns, posting on its website a series of stories about entrepreneurs who worry they won't be able to withstand Trump's plan to reconfigure the global trading system using tariff barriers. Elon Musk confirms shutdown of Tesla Dojo, ‘an evolutionary dead end'
Elon Musk confirmed over the weekend reports that Tesla has disbanded the team working on its Dojo AI training supercomputer, just weeks after announcing he expected to have Tesla's second cluster operating 'at scale' in 2026. 'Once it became clear that all paths converged to AI6, I had to shut down Dojo and make some tough personnel choices, as Dojo 2 was now an evolutionary dead end,' Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns, on Sunday. 'Dojo 3 arguably lives on in the form of a large number of AI6 [systems-on-a-chip] on a single board.' After bringing its first Dojo supercomputer to life and powering it with a mix of Nvidia GPUs and in-house-made D1 chips, Tesla had planned to build a second Dojo factory – referred to by Musk as 'Dojo 2' – that would have been powered by a second-generation D2 chip. It appears the D2 chip under development has been shelved along with the broader Dojo project as Tesla shifts its focus to its AI5 and AI6 chips, which are being manufactured by TSMC and Samsung, respectively. The AI5 chip is primarily built to power FSD, Tesla's driver assistance system, while AI6 is designed for both onboard inference – meaning, it promises to power self-driving in cars and autonomous capabilities in humanoid robots – and large-scale AI training. 'It doesn't make sense for Tesla to divide its resources and scale two quite different AI chip designs,' Musk posted late Friday evening. 'The Tesla AI5, AI6 and subsequent chips will be excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training. All effort is focused on that.' He added that for a supercomputer cluster, it makes more sense to put 'many AI5/AI6 chips on a board, whether for inference or training, simply to reduce network cabling complexity & cost by a few orders of magnitude.' 'One could call that Dojo 3, I suppose,' he said. Musk has talked about Dojo since 2019, reiterating that Dojo would be a cornerstone of Tesla's mission to achieve full self-driving and commercialize humanoid robots. Talk of Dojo halted around August 2024 when Musk began touting Cortex instead, a 'giant new AI training supercluster being built at Tesla HQ in Austin to solve real-world AI.' It's not clear if Cortex is still in the works. TechCrunch has reached out to Tesla to learn more, as well as to inquire about the fate of the Dojo facility Tesla had invested $500 million to build in Buffalo, New York. The shift in strategy comes at a time when Tesla is experiencing falling EV sales and significant brand damage after Musk's forays into politics. Musk has worked to convince investors that Tesla still has a future in autonomy, despite a slow and limited robotaxi launch in Austin this past June that resulted in numerous reported incidents of the vehicles exhibiting problematic driving behavior.
