KOTA BHARU, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM)'s six-month 'Biggest Losses' Body Mass Index (BMI) reduction programme has helped 90 officers, rank and file, and civil staff from 354 participants move out of the obesity category.
Kelantan deputy police chief DCP Mohd Ali Thamby said the remaining 264 participants are still undergoing the programme and are being closely monitored to strengthen the force's readiness through a holistic health approach.
"The main goal of this programme is to help PDRM personnel achieve an ideal BMI, improve stamina and physical endurance, and cultivate a healthy work culture.
"The ideal BMI is not just a health indicator, it reflects physical readiness, professional image, and the ability of personnel to perform demanding duties more effectively," he told reporters after closing the programme at the Kelantan Police Headquarters here today.
The programme started last November and was initiated by the Training Branch of the Kelantan Contingent Management Department, with participation from 10 districts and 10 departments under the state PDRM.
Meanwhile, Constable Muhammad Aiman Abdullah, 32, from the Gua Musang District Police Headquarters transport unit, emerged as the winner after reducing his weight by 27.8 kilogrammes (kg), from 105.8 kg to 78 kg over six months.
"Previously, I would tire and feel sleepy easily, but now that I'm lighter, I feel more energetic and motivated to work. I avoided sugar, skipped rice at night, chose egg whites and grilled food without oil, and drank a lot of water. It was tough at first... the first one or two weeks, my hands and feet were shaking, but eventually, it became part of my routine," he said.

State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said 14,922 children were vaccinated in Melaka Tengah, 6,194 in Alor Gajah, and 6,050 in Jasin. The 10-week MRSIA campaign targets 46,500 children, with 26,500 in Melaka Tengah, 12,000 in Alor Gajah, and 8,000 in Jasin. Jasin recorded the highest vaccination rate at 77.73 per cent, followed by Melaka Tengah (58.43 per cent) and Alor Gajah (53.63 per cent). Ngwe announced this during the launch of the Melaka-level Bulan Malaysia Sihat Sejahtera (BMSS) celebration, attended by state Health director Dr. Ruzita Mustaffa. He said the vaccination coverage exceeded the initial 12-day target of 36.36 per cent. The Melaka Health Department aims to vaccinate over 95 per cent of eligible children within the campaign period. Parents are urged to ensure children aged six to 59 months, born between August 1, 2020, and January 31, 2025, receive the free supplementary vaccination. Dr. Ruzita said over 13 health programmes will run in September as part of BMSS, targeting communities and schools. Health screenings will be held at three district hospitals and clinics from September 1 to 30. The programme includes the Orang Asli community through collaborations with various agencies. BMSS aims to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce non-communicable disease risks like diabetes and obesity. - Bernama

Two Former Media Practitioners In Perlis Receive Tabung Kasih@HAWANA Aid

GENERAL KANGAR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The Communications Ministry continues to assist former media practitioners who are facing health issues, with two more receiving assistance from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund in Perlis. Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa presented the contribution to former part-time reporter and photographer of China Press, Abdul Karim Ahmad, 72, who is suffering from diabetes, at Kampung Guar Syed Alwi here today. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief and HAWANA 2025 project director Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. Earlier on Friday, Nur-ul Afida had presented a contribution to former part-time Berita Harian reporter Mohd Rashidi Abd Karim, 59, who is suffering from kidney stones. This initiative, implemented by the ministry through Bernama in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2023, is a symbol of the MADANI Government's concern in highlighting the values of compassion, empathy and appreciation for the role of the media. The two former media practitioners also received flags in conjunction with the 1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign in conjunction with the 68th National Day celebration. Meanwhile, Mohd Rashidi expressed his gratitude for the concern shown by the Communications Ministry and Bernama for his welfare as a former media practitioner. He said the contribution brought him joy as it made him feel appreciated and recognised for his role throughout his time as a part-time reporter from 1989 to 2015. Abdul Karim, also a former journalist with Utusan Malaysia in the 1980s, described the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA contribution as a significant gesture of appreciation for 'veterans' like him.
