Nagpur University Academic Council Refuses Another ‘Carry On' For Failed Students

Nagpur: The Nagpur University academic council has rejected the demand for another attempt for students who didn't clear a minimum number of subjects in their previous exams. Though this facility is commonly known as 'carry on', the academic council agenda for the meeting last week doesn't mention the term. Acting vice chancellor Madhavi Khode-Chavare confirmed to TOI that the academic council has discontinued the provision for failed students. Students, mainly from engineering courses, were demanding the continuation of the 'carry on' facility as many of them couldn't clear subjects from even the first year. The carry on provision allows students to get admitted to a new academic session without the condition of passing a minimum number of subjects from previous years. Such students enrol in a new semester and also keep appearing in the exams for previous semesters. Under the allowed to keep term (ATKT) provision, students have to clear at least 50% of subjects to get admission to the next semester. An academic council member said last year the university made a one-time exception, but it was found that there were just a handful of students. "While the number of students requiring carry on was low, the burden on the exam section was huge. Hence, the academic council this time rejected the demand," the member said. The member added that the exception was made on the grounds that NEP 2020 was being implemented and such students required one more chance to adapt to the changes. "The demand is mainly from engineering students and this year too the number is quite low. The timetable will go for a toss and delay the exam process if the university again gives them a chance," the member said. However, students have cited the example of Amravati, Pune, and other universities, where such a facility is being considered by the authorities, to push for their demand.

The full-time deans were appointed by then vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari, who passed away in September last year. The deans were allowed to continue till the end of the academic year in April, but their terms were extended till June 15, keeping NU's workload in mind. The process of appointing a new vice-chancellor has also picked up pace, with the university planning to soon publish a recruitment advertisement. Once a new VC is appointed, the NU will also get full-time deans and a pro vice-chancellor.
