
Philosophy of ubuntu offers powerful framework for ethical leadership
Perhaps the most important part of this preamble is the start, 'We, the people'. This phrase implies that we hold power in various ways, and there is an implication that leadership is a communal act.
In recent years, I have pondered how we can perceive the world through the lens of societal impact. This idea is perhaps best understood through ubuntu.
Ubuntu is predicated on the belief that our existence and identity are deeply intertwined with the collective, which informs our purpose. Humans are thus considered to be fundamentally interconnected. If we are to build on this concept through the lens of leadership, it stands to reason that leadership is for others, too.
In advocating for ubuntu leadership, I am not only advocating for a return to African values, but also for a system that seeks to better our world.
Structural and systemic deficits
As a continent, we still find ourselves grappling with structural and systemic deficits as well as the siphoning off of resources. This seems to have overshadowed every achievement we have made.
South Africa is certainly not an outlier here. The legacy of State Capture and other corrupt practices has resulted in a deeply entrenched culture of distrust in our society.
An analysis of the data that informed the Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) Risk Report released on 21 July 2025, for instance, points to one fundamental root cause driving our national risk profile: a lack of institutional and leadership capacity.
This finding really speaks to a much deeper challenge. In many ways, we are devoid of the leadership required to anticipate, mitigate or even respond to risk effectively. Thus, compelling arguments must be made for the urgent need to cultivate ethical leadership.
Ethical leadership should be predicated on integrity, honesty and accountability while emphasising the welfare of others. We should consider a leadership style that finds its roots in various African societies and cultures.
As leaders step into positions of power and influence, they must do so honestly and ethically. The Institute of Risk Management's report reveals that the challenges we face as a nation, whether political, economic, social or environmental, are deeply interconnected with the quality of leadership at all levels of society.
This is where the philosophy of ubuntu offers a powerful framework for ethical leadership. If we have any hope of building a strong and capable state once again, predicated on ethical leadership, the priority needs to be on building trust through demonstrable honesty and integrity. This calls for a stand against corruption in every form.
We must thus revert to the basic tenets of true leadership — in ways authentic to our context. To return to our Constitution, 'we the people' implies that every citizen has a role to play in shaping the society in which we live. Democracy is fundamentally participatory and demands our engagement and our commitment to one another. For those of us in positions of influence, it serves as a grounding force. Our authority is derived from the people, and we are accountable to them.
Better collective outcomes
Collective success cannot only be achieved by the state or 'leaders' somewhere else. It can only be achieved when the everyday actions of everyday people at home, at work, or in public result in better collective outcomes.
Dr Armand Bam argues: 'Leadership looks different here. It looks like a teacher who stays behind after school. A nurse who still shows up an hour before her shift. A small business owner who keeps paying wages even when the books don't balance. Leadership is the domestic worker who helps raise another family's children while sending her own to school. It is the everyday commitment to build, again and again.'
Combining this reminder with the basic tenets of true leadership compels us to rediscover our social duty to lead where we are. Each one of us must pursue our own opportunities while managing our own risks in the best interest of the collective — together creating a risk culture to support a sustainable, risk-resilient country.
This will build the individual and collective institutional and leadership capacity we need for a resilient and sustainable future.
And indeed, in this pursuit, we are reminded that progress and possibility begins with the very idea of 'we the people'. DM

The book was originally launched privately in Muldesdrift, Gauteng, in December 2024. A public launch of the book happened, also in Gauteng, in April, before last week's Durban showing. The book is a culmination of Sikhakhane's long-held ambition to narrate not only his journey but also the collective struggles of his fellow African brothers. At the core of his message lies the poignant reminder of the harsh judgments faced by black professionals, even by their own communities. "I have always wanted to chronicle my own history which is the history of most African people, the hardships they endured, the perpetual violence of poverty and the never-ending persecution they face in the land of their birth," Sikhakhane explained. This urgency to document their experiences stemmmed from the recognition that the adversity faced by black advocates is often exacerbated by societal biases. "Black advocates tend to be judged harshly for who their clients are, while their white counterparts never face such criticism," he noted, underscoring a critical imbalance that persisted within the legal framework. The advocate's narrative transcends personal experience; it serves as a mirror reflecting the broader societal bigotry rooted in pervasive white power. "In my story, I wanted to shine the light on the bigotry in our society," he remarked. Sikhakhane's work does not shy away from confronting uncomfortable truths, aiming to foster honest dialogue about the betrayal and disillusionment that has accompanied the African journey to independence. His decision to conduct multiple book launches was intentional, as he seeks to stimulate discussions centred around the future of African people. His new book aims to educate readers and initiate a constructive conversation on true liberation, a concept that he argued as being largely unfulfilled. "It's about mental emancipation and breaking the chains that tie African people to their own oppressors," he elaborated. Sikhakhane emphasised the importance of owning the narrative. "I do it on my own as I realise that mainstream media is engineered to avoid the discussion," he said, contending that it remained an extension of white control in the public dialogue. His work, standing apart from unusual media narratives, called for an awakening that challenged existing power dynamics. While the book was ultimately his, Sikhakhane acknowledged contributions from individuals like Professor Isaac Shai and his dedicated team. Questions swell in Eswatini over five men deported from US
MBABANE - In the small African kingdom of Eswatini, the arrival of five men deported from the United States under Washington's aggressive anti-immigrant measures has sparked a rare wave of public dissent. The five, nationals of Vietnam, Laos, Yemen, Cuba and Jamaica, were flown to Eswatini's administrative capital of Mbabane on 16 July on a US military plane and incarcerated after US authorities labelled them "criminal illegal aliens". The US Department of Homeland Security said the men were convicted of violent crimes "so uniquely barbaric that their home countries refused to take them back". The government of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has confirmed their presence. But spokesman Thabile Mdluli said they would not stay permanently, and "will be repatriated in due course to their different countries". That assurance, though, has not quelled a tide of questions and concerns that has risen within the kingdom about the operation. Civic and rights groups are wondering whether further deportees from the United States will arrive, and what rights the five men detained have. Public outrage at the lack of transparency led to 150 women protesting outside the US embassy in Mbabane on Friday. The protest, organised by the Eswatini Women's Movement, demanded the prisoners be returned to the United States and queried the legal basis Eswatini relied on to accept them. The five men are being held in the Matsapha Correctional Centre, 30 kilometres (20 miles) south of Mbabane. The facility, notorious for holding political prisoners and overcrowding, has been undergoing renovations and expansions since 2018, reportedly funded by the United States as part of a program covering all 14 of the country's penal centres. SOLITARY CONFINEMENT Sources within the penitentiary administration said the men were being held in solitary confinement in a high-security section of the facility, with their requests to make phone calls being denied. The sources said the men have access to medical care and the same meals as the thousand other inmates, as well as a toilet, shower and television in their cells. Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has dismissed calls by lawmakers and from other quarters for the secrecy surrounding the agreement with Washington to be lifted. "Not every decision or agreement is supposed to be publicly shared," he said. Eswatini is the second African country to receive such deportees from the United States, after South Sudan earlier this month accepted eight individuals. The situation has sparked concerns about the potential implications for Eswatini, a country already grappling with its own challenges under the absolute monarchy of King Mswati III. The 57-year-old ruler has been criticised for his lavish lifestyle and has faced accusations of human rights violations. US President Donald Trump has used the threat of high tariffs against other countries, such as Colombia, to coerce them to take in people deported from America. Eswatini is currently facing a baseline US tariff of 10 percent - less than the 30 percent levelled at neighbouring South Africa - which the government has said will negatively impact the economy. Trump has directed federal agencies to work hard on his campaign promise to expel millions of undocumented migrants from the United States. His government has turned to so-called third-country deportations in cases where the home nations of some of those targeted for removal refuse to accept them. Rights experts have warned the US deportations risk breaking international law by sending people to nations where they face the risk of torture, abduction and other abuses.

Speaking at the Liberation Movement Summit in South Africa on Sunday, Mnangagwa emphasised that Zimbabwe's development would be people-centered, inclusive, and anchored in Pan-African solidarity. 'In our case, ZANU-PF has adopted strategies to empower the youth,' Mnangagwa declared. 'We are not only issuing mining claims but also providing equipment so they can actively participate in the mining value chain.' He revealed plans to drill boreholes in each of Zimbabwe's 35,000 villages.
