The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Sunday said it is processing repatriation requests from 223 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Israel, as well as seeing to the travel needs of 30 Filipinos making up the first batch of returnees.
In a press briefing on Sunday, DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac shared that the group of 30 will include 26 OFWs who had arrived in Jordan after passing through the Allenby Bridge and King Hussein Bridge on Sunday morning.
The group of 26 will be joined by three other Filipinos from Jordan and another from the Israel-occupied West Bank, and will be accompanied home by Cacdac on a commercial flight set to arrive in the Philippines on Tuesday morning.
'Many of them also are longstanding OFWs, some about, should I say, 10 to 15 years in Israel and some three to six years in Israel, but all of them, of course, wish to come home… So rest assured, we will bring them home safely as directed by the President,' said Cacdac.
The repatriated OFWs will receive adequate assistance from the government upon arrival in the country, including P150,000 in financial assistance, TESDA training vouchers and allowances, psychosocial counseling, and post-arrival medical check-ups.
'We will provide this particular benefit upon arrival. It will stem the tide for them. It's a safety net for those who lost their jobs, at least temporarily, and [they] will receive some tulong-pinansyal, pantawid [financial aid to help them get by]… Malaking bagay din to, di ba? Kasi maiibsan din yung gastusin ng mga dumadating [This is also a big deal, right? Because it will help with their costs when they arrive],' Cacdac added.
Israel launched air attacks on Iran on June 13, claiming that the Islamic Republic is on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. Iran retaliated, hitting several areas in Israel, with the attacks between the two countries still continuing. On Sunday, Israel's ally the US bombed three nuclear sites in Iran.
Iran, which maintains that its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes, is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while Israel is not.
Alert levels
Meanwhile, Cacdac noted that the alert levels raised by the Philippines on other countries are based on decisions from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and corresponding Philippine embassies in the area.
In response to the raised alert levels in Israel and Iran, DMW advised Filipinos not to proceed with planned trips in the affected areas.
'We rely on the DFA in terms of raising the alert level, so we will depend on the political security expertise of our dear colleagues at the DFA… What I can say however, tuloy ang tulong [the assistance continues] on the ground,' Cacdac said.
Iran and Israel are currently at Alert Level 3 following armed hostilities between the two countries.
The DFA advised Filipinos in either country to consider repatriation to avoid getting caught in hostile exchanges between the two Middle Eastern countries. — BM, GMA Integrated News

DFA: No Filipino hurt in wake of Russia earthquake

'Ang affected ng tsunami alerts ay of course eastern coast of Russia, Kamchatka Peninsula, yung ating Filipinos in Hawaii, yung ating Filipinos in New Zealand, and west coast of the United States,' said Ferrer in a Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing. No Filipinos were hurt after the Magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs has said. DFA Assistant Secretary Robert Ferrer said that they are monitoring the situation in the areas that raised tsunami alerts following the tremor. (The areas affected by the tsunami alerts are, of course, the eastern coast of Russia, the Kamchatka Peninsula, our Filipinos in Hawaii, our Filipinos in New Zealand, and the west coast of the United States.) 'But as I speak to you now, bumaba na po yung mga tsunami alert levels, so hindi na po dangerous. Yung pinakamatinding tinamaan ng tsunami is yung eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula, where we have seven Filipinos in that area. So kinontact na po ng embahada natin sa Moscow ang mga Filipinos at walang tayong balitang may nasaktan o nasawi, buti na lang,' he added. (As I speak to you now, the tsunami alert levels have been lowered, so it's no longer dangerous. The eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula was hit the hardest by the tsunami, and we have seven Filipinos in that area. Our embassy in Moscow has already contacted these Filipinos, and thankfully, we have no reports of injuries or fatalities.) The DFA advised Filipinos abroad to always heed the advisories issued by the Philippine embassies. In the Philippines, the state seismic bureau, PHIVOLCS, issued tsunami warnings in over 20 provinces, particularly coastal areas on the eastern side of the country facing the Pacific Ocean. But it was eventually lifted after state seismologists did not notice any sea level disturbances. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Senate eyes policy review on Filipino seafarers' deployment to high-risk areas

A vessel said to be Greek-operated, Liberia-flagged MV Eternity C sinks in a video footage released by Yemen's Houthis, in the Red Sea, in this screen grab taken from a handout video released on July 9, 2025. The vessel had 21 Filipino crew members, more than half of whom remain missing as of July 10, 2025. HOUTHI MEDIA CENTER/Handout via REUTERS Senator Raffy Tulfo said Thursday that he will propose a hearing, in aid of legislation, to review and outline new policies and regulations on the deployment of Filipino seafarers to high-risk waters. Tulfo, chairman of the Senate committee on migrant workers, said this following reports that nine Filipino sailors are currently being held by Houthi rebels in Yemen. 'Kabilang sa mga tatalakayin ay kung dapat na bang magkaroon ng mandatory security assessment sa mga mapanganib na ruta, at kung kinakailangan nang magpatupad ng total deployment ban sa mga lugar na may mataas na banta sa buhay at kaligtasan ng ating mga seafarers,' the senator said in a statement. (Among the things that will be discussed is if there's a need to have a mandatory security assessment on dangerous routes, and if it is necessary to implement a total deployment ban in areas with a high threat to the lives and safety of our seafarers.) The Iran-backed Houthis earlier released footage of crew members who were missing after attacks on the cargo ships Eternity C and Magic Seas, claiming in an accompanying statement to have "rescued" the mariners. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega had confirmed that the Houthis were holding nine Filipino seafarers. According to Tulfo, he has asked Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Cacdac to ensure the Filipino seafarers' safety and their swift return to their families. 'Isang malaking bagay ang makumpirma nating buhay pa ang ating mga kababayang tripulante. Kaya't agad kong iminungkahi kay Sec. Cacdac na gawin ng DMW at mga kaukulang ahensya ang lahat ng kinakailangang hakbang upang matiyak ang kanilang kaligtasan at mapalaya sila sa lalong madaling panahon,' the senator said. (It's good to know that the Filipino crew members are still alive. I immediately suggested to Sec. Cacdac that the DMW and relevant agencies take all the necessary steps to ensure their safety and release as soon as possible.) In 2024, the DMW issued guidelines for licensed manning agencies to observe should Filipino seafarers be assigned on ships that would ply high-risk and conflict areas. The guidelines were released 'in the paramount interest of the continued safety and well-being of all Filipino seafarers on-board ships and in light of the increasing incidence of piracy, hijacking, and/or armed violence against ships passing through the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding areas/waters.' — RF, GMA Integrated News
