"Someone From A Coach Ahead Of Ours Fell...": Thane Train Mishap Witness

An eyewitness to the horrific suburban railway mishap in Maharashtra's Thane district on Monday morning said the chain of events began after someone in the coach ahead of his either fell after hitting a wall or "something hit our compartment". At least four commuters, including a GRP constable, died and six were injured after falling off a moving and overcrowded local train in Maharashtra's Thane district during rush hour, officials said.
The incident occurred between Diva and Kopar railway stations when the train was going towards Kasara, a police official said.
The passengers fell probably after commuters hanging from the footboard of two overcrowded trains and their backpacks brushed against each other as the trains passed in opposite directions, railway officials said.
This eyewitness, a Bhiwandi resident, had boarded the Kasara-CSMT train at Kalyan station.
"The incident happened when the train reached Mumbra station. Someone from the coach ahead of ours fell off after hitting a wall or something hit our coach. At that time, three-four people from our coach fell down and some from other coaches also fell. I think 7-8 persons lost balance and fell onto the tracks," he said.
He said his friend Rehan Shaikh (26), who was coming from Kalyan to Thane, was injured in the accident.
In the morning, the passenger flow in Mumbai's suburban network is towards the south of the metropolis where a majority of the offices are located. The flow reverses in the evening as people start leaving for home towards Thane and beyond on the Central Railway network and Andheri and beyond on Western Railway.
The morning and evening rush hours in the network are among the densest in the world.

Blind man slips through train-platform gap, dies
: Days after an accident near Mumbra station that resulted in four deaths and nine injuries when two packed trains crossed on a curve, and caused those standing on footboards to fall, yet another mishap occurred at Ghatkopar railway station on Friday evening. A 51-year-old visually impaired man, Sanjay Jagjappa Matange, died after slipping through the gap between a local train and the platform. Sambhaji Yadav, senior police inspector, Kurla Government Railway Police (GRP), said the deceased slipped from the platform after he was overcome by a sudden spell of dizziness. The incident occurred at 7.44pm when the slow local running from Parel to Thane arrived at Ghatkopar station's platform number 1. Soon after the incident, the motorman alerted GRP and said the passenger was standing under the new bridge on the Kalyan side of the platform when he suddenly felt dizzy and slipped through the gap. 'He was trapped and suffered injuries, and was in a critical condition. Passengers gathered around him in the evening rush hour. Police staff, Home Guards, RPF staff present were deployed to help. After instructing the station master and the motorman to keep the train stationary, they pulled him out,' said Yadav. But he did not move and was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in a private rickshaw, added Jadhav. 'He was declared dead on arrival,' he said. 'On searching his shirt, we found an army canteen card identifying him as Sanjay Jagjappa Matange. The card also specified that he was 100% visually impaired,' said Yadav. 1 Bangladeshi national, 1 Indian tout arrested in Tripura
The Government Railway Police (GRP) Monday informed that one Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested during two separate raids at the Agartala railway station in Tripura. In the first incident, a Bangladeshi national, identified as Pranajit Ray, 35, was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Agartala GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other sister agencies on Wednesday. During the preliminary interrogation, the investigators found that Ray, a resident of Sylhet district in Bangladesh, illegally entered Tripura and had planned to go to Kolkata from the Agartala railway station. 'We seized some documents and some Indian currency. We are examining these things,' said an officer. In a separate incident, an Indian human trafficker, a resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district, was also arrested during a joint operation conducted by security agencies. A GRP officer said the trafficker, identified as Debasish Malakar alias Debu, used to provide food and shelter to Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally. 'He was absconding for a long time. We arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) and produced before court today (Friday),' he said. Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas have been arrested for entering Tripura illegally in recent months. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1,746 have been pushed back to their country and 1,069 are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centres, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches that are still unfenced due to local disputes.

1 person arrested in connection with Jaipur-Bandra Exp robbery
The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested one person in connection with the robbery of cash and jewellery worth ₹7 lakh on the Jaipur-Bandra Express last week. The arrested accused, Surendra Bhaleram from Haryana, was traced via CCTV footage. He is a part of a gang of thieves, said the police, who are tracking down four other gang members who committed the robbery. A special task force of the railway crime branch had found a gutkha packet and broken glass at the crime scene. Since the writing on the packet was in Gujarati, the police investigated the case in Surat and found a local gang involved in the robbery. 'The remaining accused from this gang will also be arrested soon,' said railway police commissioner Rakesh Kalasagar. Last week, when Ayub Khan, a construction businessman from Jogeshwari, was coming to Mumbai in the Jaipur-Bandra Express with his wife Hina, and two young children, the train slowed down after Borivali and four unknown men tried to rob the couple at knifepoint. The couple resisted and fought the accused but the robbers managed to escape by jumping off between Goregaon and Jogeshwari stations. The gang stole the couple's trolley bag, which contained ₹7 lakh worth of jewellery and cash. The Borivali GRP had registered a case of robbery under sections 309 (4) and 3 (5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the police had formed multiple teams to search for the accused.
