Jesse Marsch on Canada's early Gold Cup exit: 'We're missing half of our group'
Canada, which had the third-best odds to win the tournament behind the U.S. and Mexico, was set for a date with the United States in the semifinals, but things didn't go according to plan. When Canada coach Jesse Marsch was asked about his team's early exit, he cited the missing players on his roster.
"If I'm honest, we're missing half of our group," Marsch told reporters. "That's not an excuse."
Before the tournament started, Marsch made headlines for seemingly taking aim at the stars of the U.S. men's team for not participating in the Gold Cup.
"Not one guy called me and said, 'Coach, I don't know, it's been a long year, maybe I don't come to the Gold Cup.' Not one guy," Marsch said earlier this month. "Not even close to that conversation."
The most notable absence for Canada is Alphonso Davies, who many consider to be the best left back in the world. Davies sustained a torn right ACL in March during the Concacaf Nations League.
Canada will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Mexico next summer.

Hall-of-Famer Randy Johnson needed 243 games to record 1,800 strikeouts. It took the Atlanta Braves' Chris Sale 1,498 innings. DeGrom, who entered the game with a 10-3 record and 2.55 ERA, worked five innings and finished with five strikeouts and three walks. He allowed four hits, including three home runs, and five earned runs. It was the first time deGrom allowed three homers in a game since Sept. 30, 2022, against the Braves, while a member of the New York Mets. DeGrom, a five-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young Award winner, signed a five-year, $185 million deal with the Rangers before the 2023 season. Lyles reeled in Bednarek in the homestretch to win in 19.63 seconds. As he was crossing the finish line, Lyles turned to Bednarek in the lane next to him and started jawing at him. A few steps after they crossed, Bednarek reached out and gave Lyles a two-handed shove. Lyles turned around, backpedaled and reached his arms out, then kept jawing at Bednarek. Their argument continued into the start of the NBC interview. "I tell ya, if you've got a problem, I expect a call," Bednarek said. Lyles replied: "You know what, you're right. You're right.
