Bayer Leverkusen signs Dutch goalkeeper Flekken from Brentford
Bayer Leverkusen has signed Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Premier League side Brentford on a three-year contract, the Bundesliga club said on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old will return to Germany after two seasons at Brentford, where he made 74 appearances in the Premier League.
'Mark Flekken possesses a wide range of skills that a goalkeeper in modern top-flight football must possess,' Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes said.
'Mark exudes an impressive physical presence; from a footballing perspective, he has certainly been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past two years.'
Flekken, who has played eight times for the Netherlands, has spent the majority of his career in Germany with clubs including Freiburg and Duisburg.
Leverkusen appointed former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as its head coach in May, replacing Xabi Alonso, who left to join Real Madrid.

Martin hired as Rangers manager and handed a big task: Regain the Scottish title from Celtic
Six months after being fired by Southampton, Russell Martin crossed the border to take over as manager of Scottish giant Rangers on Thursday and tasked with regaining the league title from fierce Glasgow rival Celtic. Martin guided Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last year but left in December following one win from the team's first 16 games. The 39-year-old Martin has secured a quick return to management at Rangers, going back to a club where he spent a half season on loan in 2018. 'From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the passion and the history,' Martin said. 'Now, as I return, I'm determined to bring success back, for the supporters, the players, and everyone inside this club. There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of.' Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of its former captain, Barry Ferguson, after firing Frenchman Philippe Clement in February. Appointing Martin — an Englishman who played international soccer for Scotland — is the latest big move by Rangers after a U.S.-based consortium, which includes an investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, purchased a majority ownership stake in the club. Health insurance entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises led a consortium of investors to have bought a 51% stake. A new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, officially began work at Rangers on Monday. Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish soccer has just continued with a 13th Premiership title in 14 seasons. Rangers won the only other title in that period, under Steven Gerrard in the 2020-21 season. Rangers and Celtic now have 55 Scottish league titles each. soccer: /hub/soccer

Soccer-Toney never feared Saudi switch would end England recall chances
June 5 - Ivan Toney said he never had any doubts about his chances of an England recall following his move to the Saudi Pro League after the free-scoring Al-Ahli striker returned to the squad ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra. The 29-year-old, who last featured for England in their 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final last July, was banned for eight months in 2023 for breaching the FA's rules on betting. He moved to Al-Ahli from Premier League club Brentford last August and has scored 30 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Saudi side. The forward gave an emphatic "No" when asked at a training camp in Girona on Wednesday if he thought moving to Saudi Arabia may affect his England chances. "You see with me I think if you're just doing the right thing, playing football, playing well and scoring goals – a striker's job, that's what you're in a team to do – it doesn't matter where you play in the world, I feel like you should still get the chance," he told British media. "I think it's been proven me being me being back here and being back amongst the boys. It feels good to see the faces again and it feels good to get stuck in." Only Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored more goals - 25 - in the Saudi top-flight in the 2024-25 season than Toney, who notched 23, more than former Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema and ex-Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang . "I feel like I'm in good form. As you see, I'm here, I'm still scoring goals," said Toney, who has been capped six times for England. "So, hopefully I can keep doing that and be in the mix for the World Cup." After playing Andorra in Spain on Saturday England host Senegal in a friendly on June 10.
