Martin hired as Rangers manager and handed a big task: Regain the Scottish title from Celtic

Hindustan Times3 days ago

Six months after being fired by Southampton, Russell Martin crossed the border to take over as manager of Scottish giant Rangers on Thursday and tasked with regaining the league title from fierce Glasgow rival Celtic.
Martin guided Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last year but left in December following one win from the team's first 16 games.
The 39-year-old Martin has secured a quick return to management at Rangers, going back to a club where he spent a half season on loan in 2018.
'From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the passion and the history,' Martin said.
'Now, as I return, I'm determined to bring success back, for the supporters, the players, and everyone inside this club. There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of.'
Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of its former captain, Barry Ferguson, after firing Frenchman Philippe Clement in February.
Appointing Martin — an Englishman who played international soccer for Scotland — is the latest big move by Rangers after a U.S.-based consortium, which includes an investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, purchased a majority ownership stake in the club. Health insurance entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises led a consortium of investors to have bought a 51% stake.
A new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, officially began work at Rangers on Monday.
Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish soccer has just continued with a 13th Premiership title in 14 seasons.
Rangers won the only other title in that period, under Steven Gerrard in the 2020-21 season.
Rangers and Celtic now have 55 Scottish league titles each.

Tottenham sacks coach Postecoglou just two weeks after Europa League win

London, June 7 (UNI) Tottenham Hotspur sacked coach Ange Postecoglou, just 16 days after he led the team to its first trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final. The club's decision came amid a dire Premier League season, which saw 59-year-old Postecoglou's side finish 17th in the table after losing 22 out of 38 matches. "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties," the club stated in a release on Friday. The statement expressed "extreme gratitude" to the Australian for becoming only the third coach to win a European title with Tottenham, but clarified that "our decision is not based on emotions tied to this achievement." "It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond." "We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward," added the club. Brentford coach Thomas Frank is widely considered the frontrunner to succeed Postecoglou, with Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola also a potential candidate. UNI/XINHUA BM

Major stadium disasters over the years - a timeline of tragic incidents in sport

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden Indian Premier League title triumph turned tragic when 11 people lost their lives in a stampede during victory celebrations outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The deceased had gathered around the stadium, waiting for entry inside to catch a glimpse of the winning RCB team, but the uncontrollable crowd resulted in the fatalities as several scores of people got injured. There have been similar tragic incidents in sport involving fans across countries, either caused by a stampede, clashes with the police, or structural collapses inside a stadium. Happy Valley Racecourse fire (1918) More than a century ago, Hong Kong witnessed a horrific fire at the Happy Valley Racecourse which claimed more than 600 lives. Several accounts of the tragedy online suggest that it was caused when the stands at the club, made largely of bamboo and wood, collapsed and caught fire after coming in contact with food stalls at the venue. Estadio Nacional disaster (1964) Lima was hosting Argentina in an Olympic qualifying football match. Argentina was leading when an equaliser was disallowed by the referee. This sparked spectators throng the field in anger which saw the local police resort to tear gas. According to The Guardian, at least 263 people, including women and children, lost their lives. Hillsborough disaster (1989) One of the most fatal stadium incidents in Britain's history, the Hillsborough disaster took place in April 1989 during an FA Cup semifinal match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. It occurred when thousands of fans, trying to enter the stadium, were asked to wait in a small waiting pen. Due to paucity of space and overcrowding, 97 people lost their lives, many due to suffocation. Indonesia stadium tragedy (2022) At least 174 people died at an Indonesian football stadium when thousands of angry home fans invaded the pitch and police responded with tear gas that triggered a stampede. The tragedy in the city of Malang, which also left 180 injured, was one of the world's deadliest sporting stadium disasters. Arema FC supporters at the Kanjuruhan stadium stormed the pitch after their team lost 3-2 to the visiting team and bitter rival, Persebaya Surabaya. Police, who described the unrest as 'riots', said they tried to force fans to return to the stands and fired tear gas after two officers were killed. Liverpool parade (2025) Several Liverpool supporters were recently severely injured when a van rammed into them during celebrations surrounding the team winning England's Premier League this season for a record-tying 20th top-flight title. As the parade was wrapping up, a minivan turned down a cordoned-off street just off the parade route and ploughed into the sea of fans wrapped in their red Liverpool scarves, jerseys and other memorabilia. A video on social media showed the van strike a man, tossing him in the air, before veering into a larger crowd, where it ploughed a path through the group and pushed bodies along the street before coming to a stop. According to BBC, more than 100 people were left injured.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's absence 'a shame', but England rival unfazed; warns team of India's unrivalled depth

Chris Woakes was England Lions' star with the ball on the opening day of the second unofficial Test match, taking the first three Indian wickets. It serves as a good sign for Woakes, who is returning from injury and was named in England's squad for the first Test of the series at Headingley in Leeds. Woakes, however, was frustrated by a precise and chanceless century made by KL Rahul, who impressed with 116 to set the spine for India A's innings. Woakes was full of praise for the Indian opener, especially considering that it was a lively and moving pitch throughout the day. 'KL played really well, good hundred, on a wicket which did a little bit all day. There were periods where it was a bit quiet, but it was doing something for most of the day,' Woakes reflected on the proceedings in an interview with ESPNcricinfo after day's play. When asked about what it feels like to be preparing against an Indian team without Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, Woakes spoke about how he thinks the team is still in a strong position due to the quality of replacements and the depth present in the setup. 'It's always good to come up against strong opposition going into a Test series that you know is going to be hard-fought. We've had some good battles against Virat and Rohit over the years. For the game itself, it's a shame they won't be there,' said Woakes. 'But Indian cricket has so much depth, the players who will come in, I'm sure will be of a very high standard, who have proven themselves some way or the other,' claimed the Englishman. If Woakes is drafted into England's team for the Test match, he will take confidence from his dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal on day one. A big inswinger caught Jaiswal falling across, trapping him LBW. Woakes also contributed with the wickets of Ahimanyu Easwaran and Karun Nair, all LBW. On if he enjoyed the Jaiswal wicket, Woakes said he was happy with how he performed after an injury layoff, and the ability to bowl an extended spell. 'I enjoyed all three to be honest. I felt like I could have a couple more, but pleased with how the ball came out. Most important for me was to get through 17 overs. Ticked box for me.'
