Girl found dead near rly tracks, kin move HC for CB-CID probe

Time of India20-05-2025

Chennai: The parents of a 14-year-old girl from a
Cuddalore
village, who was found dead near the railway tracks at Velankanni in Nagapattinam district on April 29, have sought
Madras high court
intervention for a
CB-CID probe
into the matter.
In their petition, the agricultural labourers alleged negligence and a possible cover-up, saying police buried the body without proper identification and dismissed their pleas for an investigation.
They said the girl eloped with her boyfriend Dinesh on April 21 after telling them she was visiting the Velankanni temple. On April 29, she called her father from an unknown number, saying Dinesh had fallen unconscious after drinking and that she needed money to return home.
Her mother agreed to send funds online, but the girl abruptly disconnected the call. Subsequent calls to the number were answered by an unidentified man who refused to cooperate, citing pending police cases against him.
When Dinesh contacted them asking about the girl's whereabouts, suspicion grew. The parents lodged a missing complaint at Vadalur police station on May 1 but were told to approach the Velankanni police who sent them back to Vadalur.

On May 8, during another visit to Velankanni police station, they saw their daughter's photograph on a notice board, but police insisted it was that of a 35-year-old Muslim woman who died by suicide on April 29.
Inquiries at Nagapattinam railway police station showed the body was buried as "unidentified" after minimal investigation. Authorities said they had published a small newspaper advertisement. CCTV camera footage obtained by the parents showed the girl with an unidentified man clad in a saffron dhoti and limping a lead they alleged police ignored.
The parents, who suspect foul play including possible rape and murder, alleged that on their way to the Nagapattinam collectorate on May 9, GRP officials intercepted them, offering ₹5 lakh to drop the matter. They said they protested and headed to Chennai where they slept at Koyambedu bus terminus before filing through advocate M Mani a petition in Madras high court demanding a CB-CID probe, exhumation for a second autopsy by independent medical experts, and the return of the body for proper last rites.

Frederick Forsyth , the British author of "The Day of the Jackal " and other bestselling thrillers , has died after a brief illness, his literary agent said Monday. He was 86. "We mourn the passing of one of the world's greatest thriller writers," Lloyd said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Retirement Village Coming To Minneapolis - Take A Look At The Prices New York Retirement Village Click Here Undo Born in Kent, in southern England, in 1938, Forsyth served as a Royal Air Force pilot before becoming a foreign correspondent. He covered the attempted assassination of French President Charles de Gaulle in 1962, which provided inspiration for "The Day of the Jackal," his bestselling political thriller about a professional assassin. Published in 1971, the book propelled him into global fame. It was made into a film in 1973 starring Edward Fox as the Jackal and more recently a television series starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch. Live Events In 2015, Forsyth told the BBC that he had also worked for the British intelligence agency MI6 for many years, starting from when he covered a civil war in Nigeria in the 1960s. Although Forsyth said he did other jobs for the agency, he said he was not paid for his services and "it was hard to say no" to officials seeking information. "The zeitgeist was different," he told the BBC. "The Cold War was very much on." He wrote more than 25 books including "The Afghan," "The Kill List," "The Dogs of War" and "The Fist of God" that have sold over 75 million copies, Lloyd said. His publisher, Bill Scott-Kerr, said that "Revenge of Odessa," a sequel to the 1974 book "The Odessa File" that Forsyth worked on with fellow thriller author Tony Kent, will be published in August. "Still read by millions across the world, Freddie's thrillers define the genre and are still the benchmark to which contemporary writers aspire," Scott-Kerr said.

No evidence: HC acquits 6 accused in human trafficking & rape case

Bhopal: A division bench of the Madhya Pradesh high court acquitted six accused, including four women, who were sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Pocso court in Chhindwara for human trafficking and the rape of a minor. During the hearing, the court found that the mother of the minor girl lodged a complaint about her 'missing' daughter almost a year after she went missing. A week later, the girl lodged a complaint at the police station, naming the accused in her FIR. The court further noted that the girl in question eloped with other boys twice earlier. There were no documents to prove that she was a minor. The court acquitted all the accused in the absence of credible evidence. According to the prosecution, the girl went missing on March 16, 2013. However, her mother lodged a report about her missing daughter on March 12, 2014. The girl surfaced a week later and lodged a complaint that she was sold by some persons and raped by the person who bought her. She also named the accused in the FIR. In her statement to the police, the girl said she was a student at Rani Laxmibai School and, since her mother was not keeping well, she also started working as domestic help with one of her friends. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo The accused, Anjum, Shanti Bai, her daughter Rajni, and son-in-law Kailash Yadav, took her and her friend to Bhopal, where they met Anjum's mother, Khairunnisa. From Bhopal, they went to Susner through Shujalpur. In Susner, she was sold to Vijay Singh. She was asked to wear a saree, and some cash was put in her lap. She was 17 years of age then. Vijay forcibly married her and sexually exploited her for nearly a year until she escaped and reached the police station. The Chhindwara police investigated the case and charge-sheeted it in a Pocso court. The court sentenced all the accused to 10 years in jail. The bench of Justice Atul Sreedharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla, hearing the criminal revision petition of the accused, observed that there was no force used to take the girl to Susner and hand her off to Vijay Singh. The girl appeared to have gone with them on her own. In her statement, she said that at Susner, she was asked to wear a saree, and some cash was put on her lap. An engagement ceremony was being performed without informing her. The girl was a student, and she must have seen ceremonies like this taking place before marriage. There was no document to substantiate that she was a minor at that time, except for the date of birth written in the school document based on the information given by her parents. The medico-legal test on the girl failed to give a conclusive opinion on rape, as she was with Vijay Singh for almost a year. The mother of the girl lodged a complaint about her missing daughter a year after she went missing. She didn't inquire from any of the accused about her daughter during this period either. It appeared that the girl went with the accused after informing her mother. The court believed that it was with the agreement of the girl that she was taken to Susner and married to Vijay Singh. The girl's friend, in her statement, said that she 'eloped' with other boys on two occasions earlier. Her mother was aware of it. There was no evidence regarding the age of the girl. In such a situation, the accused were acquitted for want of credible evidence, and the Pocso court order was set aside, the court said.

78-year-old bizman found dead in his four-storey S Kol residence

Kolkata: The decomposed body of a 78-year-old businessman, Ashutosh Das , was discovered at his four-storey residence near Ganguly Bagan under Netaji Nagar police station on Monday morning. Cops reached the scene following reports of a foul smell emanating from the building. After initial investigation, police believe that Das, who lived alone, accidentally fell off the stairs at least a couple of days ago and died due to excessive bleeding. His wife passed away several years ago, and his children are settled in Delhi and Australia. A post-mortem is being conducted to rule out foul play. Das, a businessman dealing in printing cloths and saris, was found partially lying on the floor beside a staircase. "It was around 8.55 am that Netaji Nagar PS received information from an unknown caller that a foul smell was emitting from the building. Accordingly, police went to the spot and found that the grill entrance gate of the building was locked with a padlock. Upon repeated knocking and calls made to Das, none responded from inside. Subsequently, police broke open the padlock in the presence of other neighbours. On entering the premises, police also found a wooden entrance door which was locked from inside by a cleat. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Simple. Das was taken to Baghajatin State General Hospital where he was declared dead. "Enquiry has revealed that the deceased used to reside in this building alone for the last ten years. He has one son who resides in Delhi and one daughter who resides in Australia. Both are married. His son has been informed," said Kumar. "A local, Amit Banerjee said, "We had not seen Das for several days, which was unusual given he did all the chores himself. The smell became unbearable this morning and one conservancy worker came to conduct a check and asked us to accompany him to the house." "We are examining all angles, including the possibility of foul play, though initial evidence suggests an accidental fall," said Bidisha Kalita, DCP (SSD-Jadavpur).
