Girl found dead near rly tracks, kin move HC for CB-CID probe

Time of India20-05-2025

Chennai: The parents of a 14-year-old girl from a
Cuddalore
village, who was found dead near the railway tracks at Velankanni in Nagapattinam district on April 29, have sought
Madras high court
intervention for a
CB-CID probe
into the matter.
In their petition, the agricultural labourers alleged negligence and a possible cover-up, saying police buried the body without proper identification and dismissed their pleas for an investigation.
They said the girl eloped with her boyfriend Dinesh on April 21 after telling them she was visiting the Velankanni temple. On April 29, she called her father from an unknown number, saying Dinesh had fallen unconscious after drinking and that she needed money to return home.
Her mother agreed to send funds online, but the girl abruptly disconnected the call. Subsequent calls to the number were answered by an unidentified man who refused to cooperate, citing pending police cases against him.
When Dinesh contacted them asking about the girl's whereabouts, suspicion grew. The parents lodged a missing complaint at Vadalur police station on May 1 but were told to approach the Velankanni police who sent them back to Vadalur.

On May 8, during another visit to Velankanni police station, they saw their daughter's photograph on a notice board, but police insisted it was that of a 35-year-old Muslim woman who died by suicide on April 29.
Inquiries at Nagapattinam railway police station showed the body was buried as "unidentified" after minimal investigation. Authorities said they had published a small newspaper advertisement. CCTV camera footage obtained by the parents showed the girl with an unidentified man clad in a saffron dhoti and limping a lead they alleged police ignored.
The parents, who suspect foul play including possible rape and murder, alleged that on their way to the Nagapattinam collectorate on May 9, GRP officials intercepted them, offering ₹5 lakh to drop the matter. They said they protested and headed to Chennai where they slept at Koyambedu bus terminus before filing through advocate M Mani a petition in Madras high court demanding a CB-CID probe, exhumation for a second autopsy by independent medical experts, and the return of the body for proper last rites.

Sebi issues Rs 5.35-cr demand notice to OPG Securities, others in NSE co-location case

Sebi has sent notices to stock broker OPG Securities and its directors asking them to pay Rs 5.35 crore, in a case of unfair access to secondary market servers in connection with the NSE co-location issue, and warned of attachment of assets as well as bank accounts if they fail to make the payment within 15 days. The demand notices came after the entities failed to pay the fine imposed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in April 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Colombia: Nueva oportunidad de inversión en Miami Financiación Empresarial Más información Undo In three separate recovery notices issued on Monday, the regulator directed OPG Securities and its directors -- Sanjay Gupta, Sangeeta Gupta, and Om Prakash Gupta -- to pay dues totalling Rs 5.35 crore within 15 days. This included a penalty amount and an interest. In the event of non-payment of dues, the market regulator said it will recover the amount by attaching and selling their moveable and immovable properties. Besides, they face attachment of bank accounts and arrest. In its order passed in April, Sebi levied a fine of Rs 5 crore on OPG Securities and its directors jointly for engaging in unfair trade practices. Live Events Additionally, Sebi imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh each on OPG Securities and Sanjay Gupta for non-compliance with the regulator's code of conduct and hampering the investigation, respectively. "Noticee 1 (OPG Securities) gained an unfair advantage by repeatedly accessing the Secondary POP Server, thereby making unlawful gain. Regardless of the quantum of such unlawful gain, it is evident that the manner in which Noticee 1 connected to the secondary server constituted an unfair practice, which was recurrent in nature. This amounts to a serious violation," Sebi had stated. Furthermore, the regulator had highlighted that OPG Securities failed to uphold standards of integrity, due skill, care, and diligence in its business operations, while also neglecting to ensure compliance with statutory requirements. Since the Guptas were directors of OPG Securities during the period of violation, they were deemed vicariously liable for the company's actions, it had added.

Vijay Mallya claims he repaid money in full. But what's the reality?

Vijay Mallya is the talk of the town, again. After his four-hour long podcast with influencer Raj Shamani, the government and banks have called out the 'declared eonomic fugitive' for his claims that he is being harassed by lenders even after he has repaid the outstanding debts. Meanwhile, the lenders have argued that the bankrupt businessman still owes a large amount of money to creditors. However, as per TOI sources, Mallya owes banks them nearly Rs 7,000 crore. The math is simple: When the case reached the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) in June 2013, Kingfisher Airlines ' consolidated non-performing assets (NPAs) stood at Rs 6,848 crore, which included non-cumulative redeemable preference shares. Live Events As per the DRT decree, the total dues to creditors, including interest and charges, climbed to Rs 17,781 crore by April 10. Of this, banks have recovered Rs 10,815 crore, leaving an outstanding amount of Rs 6,997 crore, government sources told TOI. Source: TOI Officials said Mallya's repayment claims ignore the accrual of interest and penal charges, which are applicable until the full settlement of loans. Any loan comes with interest until the amount is fully paid. In case of loan defaulters, such as Mallya, there is also a penal interest. Sources added that Mallya appears to be citing repayment of the principal alone. This isn't the first time he has made such assertions. The liquor baron, who left India in 2016, continues to contest legal efforts to extradite him back to face charges of financial fraud and loan default. Following his exit from the country, banks were allowed by courts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to liquidate properties attached by enforcement agencies. Sales included marquee assets like the Kingfisher Villa in Goa. These recoveries were conducted in accordance with board-approved policies of banks. 'Norms are uniform irrespective of who the borrower is or from which part of the country or community he or she comes from. So, any allegation or claim made by Mallya regarding recoveries under any undue influence or under media pressure or due to an inherent bias against him is misconstrued and completely baseless,' TOI quoted a source as saying. Loans extended to Kingfisher Airlines also came under scrutiny, with instances of alleged irregularities. Former IDBI Bank chairman Yogesh Agarwal was among those arrested in connection with the case.

'Will not tolerate illegal entry': US embassy amid Indian student handcuffing row; warns on visa misuse

Image credits: X/@SONOFINDIA US embassy in India on Tuesday reiterated its stance on illegal immigration and said that it will not tolerate violation of any laws or visa abuse. In a social media post on X, the official handle of US embassy said, "The United States continues to welcome legitimate travelers to our country. However, there is no right to visit the United States," "We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of US law," it added. This comes a day after an Indian student was handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States before he was deported. A video was shared by X user Kunal Jain, an Indian-American social entrepreneur who writes books in Hindi, and recently relocated to India. According to Singh, the incident occurred at Newark Airport. He tagged the Indian Embassy, as well as external affairs minister S Jaishankar, seeking help for the boy. "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," he posted on his social media handle. As per the ministry of external affairs, the administration of US President Donald Trump, since assuming power in January, has deported as many as 1,080 Indian nationals from America. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Meanwhile a massive protest was held in Las Angeles over US President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. Protesters set self-driving cars ablaze, blocked the 101 freeway, and clashed with law enforcement late into Sunday night, leaving parts of the city scorched and on edge. The flashpoint came after Trump took the extraordinary step of deploying the National Guard to California without the consent of the state's governor, an act not seen in decades. More than 300 troops arrived over the weekend, with 2,000 authorised and 500 US Marines on standby. Meanwhile, California governor Gavin Newsom told MSNBC that he will file suit on Monday against the Trump administration and called its order "an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act."
