US trade deal will only benefit Jaguar Land Rover, warns Aston Martin
Adrian Hallmark said changes to the UK-US agreement were urgently needed 'so we don't get squashed and so that it doesn't become a JLR tariff agreement'.
The chief executive's comments, reported by Bloomberg, concern the trade deal's arrangements for British cars shipped to America under a new quota system that came into effect this month.
Under the deal, tariffs on British cars have fallen from 27.5pc to 10pc. But this is only for the first 100,000 cars per year, or 25,000 cars per quarter.
It has also recently been confirmed that this quota will be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, triggering fears that carmakers will be forced to race against each other to get vehicles out of factories and on to ships first – or face higher taxes than their competitors.
JLR shipped more than 120,000 cars to North America in 2024, according to published sales figures. Aston shipped about 2,000.
High stakes
On Wednesday, Mr Hallmark called on the Government to impose limits for different categories within the quota. For example, he said some of the quota should be reserved for the type of high-end supercars that Aston and competitors produce.
The marque also competes with the likes of JLR, Lotus, Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the lucrative luxury SUV market with its DBX model.
The stakes for these brands are high because once the quota is taken up, they must go back to paying the 27.5pc tariffs Mr Trump previously imposed in April.
Such levies have proved expensive for companies exporting from the EU, which is scrambling to get a deal with Mr Trump over the line to reduce the rate to 15pc.
Vauxhall owner Stellantis has said it expected to pay €1.5bn (£1.3bn) in tariffs this year. Separately on Wednesday, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche said tariffs would cost them €362m and €400m respectively for the first half of 2025 alone.
Earlier this month, Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said there was a 'general feeling' among carmakers 'that the tariff quota we have is sufficient to meet the demand for this year' but the industry wanted it to grow year on year.
However, at the moment there is no indication that the quota will be increased.
Mr Hawes added: 'They're reasonable quotas, given our export volumes. Obviously we would like to see that increase … but at least it gives you a basis to start from.
'Different brands will have different strategies, wherever they are on the product cycle for next year, and we know there are some new products coming next year.'
He admitted there was a possibility that carmakers might seek to beat each other to the quota and that there was probably 'some paranoia' about that in the industry.
But he claimed such a scenario was 'unlikely, because if you try and put one over on your competitors, you're going to damage that same supply chain, because it's shared among so many of these manufacturers'.
Sir Keir visited the Midlands headquarters of JLR in May when he announced his 'landmark' trade deal with Mr Trump and vowed to protect jobs.
However, just weeks later the carmaker said it would cut 500 jobs in what was described as 'a personal embarrassment' for the Prime Minister.
A government spokesman said: 'We are working with industry to ensure the quota works effectively and fairly, and will ensure the UK remains a top destination for investment in automotive manufacturing through our Plan for Change.'
JLR was approached for comment on Wednesday.
Mr Hallmark's remarks came as Aston confirmed a 25pc drop in sales during the first half of 2025, blaming both US tariffs that were announced in April and lower deliveries of 'specials' – the ultra-expensive and highly profitable one-off models it produces.
The company sold 1,922 in the first six months of this year, down from 1,998 in 2024.
But revenues fell 25pc to £454m and profit margins shrank from 39pc to 28pc, reflecting the less profitable sales mix. Half-year losses fell from about £217m to £141m.

Examining Cashflow Against Koninklijke Heijmans' Earnings One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF. That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking. In fact, it had free cash flow of €199m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of €112.0m. Here's why I'm batty about Games Workshop, 1 of the FTSE's best growth shares
Games Workshop (LSE:GAW) released another extraordinary trading update on Tuesday (29 July), sending its shares close to recent record peaks. Long-term investors like me have learned to expect the unexpected from the fantasy wargaming specialist. But bat-related news probably wasn't on anyone's bingo card, and is probably a first for the London stock market. In a footnote to its update, the FTSE 100 company drew special attention to 'the cute looking pipistrelle bat that is delaying our work on our new temporary car park'. Animal lovers needn't be alarmed, by the way–Games Workshop added that 'we are carefully looking after the bat'. Aside from that nature update, there were some other unexpected things for shareholders to digest, too. Both revenues and pre-tax profits came in ahead of City forecasts, at £617.5m and £262.8m, respectively, in the financial year to May 2025. The company had forecast figures of at least £610m and £255m two months ago. And it sent Games Workshop's share price close to June's all-time high of £167.30. Profits powerhouse This week's update underlines why Games Workshop is one of my favourite FTSE 100 growth shares. It just keeps delivering outstanding trading performances, even when economic conditions are tough and consumer spending power fades. Sales were up 18% year on year in 2025, while pre-tax profit increased 30%. Earnings per share, meanwhile, also increased 30% to 594.9p per share. The company's products — spearheaded by the famous Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi franchise — are in high demand at all points of the economic cycle. Their quality and brand power provides an economic moat that supports strong revenues growth even during broader market downturns. These advantages also mean Games Workshop enjoys the luxury of world-class margins. Last year, the core gross margin rose 10 basis points year on year to 69.5%. This fatty percentage gave the bottom line another substantial boost. Licence to grow It's great to see the company's box sets, paints, and other game-related products continue flying off the shelves. But what's got me especially excited is the rate at which licensing revenues are growing. While sales across its core operations rose a healthy 14% last year, licencing revenue growth of 69% was truly outstanding. This reflected forecast-beating sales of its Space Marine 2 video game. Games Workshop is sitting on a goldmine of intellectual property (IP), and is ramping up partnerships and licensing deals with media producers to capitalise on it and turbocharge long-term growth. Financial 2025's strong numbers bode well, with Space Marine 3 in the works and Amazon starting work on a Warhammer 40,000 film and TV series. A top FTSE share Annual earnings have risen 34% on average at Games Workshop over the last decade. And I'm confident it will keep delivering spectacular yearly growth over the long term. There are some dangers it must navigate, though, such as rising protectionism in key markets. It has warned that trade tariffs will wipe £12m off pre-tax profits this year alone. Rising competition is another danger to sales and margins. But I'm hopeful it will still keep delivering stunning returns, underpinned by its dominant market position and those ambitious licencing plans. Slow US job gains expected in July; unemployment rate forecast rising to 4.2%
By Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. job growth likely slowed in July, with the unemployment rate forecast rising back to 4.2%, but that probably would be insufficient to spur the Federal Reserve to resume cutting interest rates soon as tariffs are starting to fan inflation. The anticipated slowdown in nonfarm payrolls in the Labor Department's closely watched employment report on Friday would mostly be payback after a surprise surge in state and local government education boosted employment gains in June. The U.S. central bank on Wednesday left its benchmark interest rate in the 4.25%-4.50% range. Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments after the decision undercut confidence the central bank would resume policy easing in September as had been widely anticipated by financial markets and some economists. Though Powell described the labor market as being in balance because of supply and demand both declining at the same time, he acknowledged that this dynamic was "suggestive of downside risk." Job growth has slowed amid uncertainty over where President Donald Trump's tariff levels will eventually settle. Trump on Thursday slapped dozens of trading partners with steep tariffs ahead of a Friday trade deal deadline, including a 35% duty on many goods from Canada. The White House's immigration crackdown has reduced labor supply as has an acceleration of baby boomer retirements. "We just don't have a roadmap yet with respect to tariffs, and now that it's coming into place, I think that can certainly help, but if you're thinking about what you're planning for your business over the next two to three years ... you don't want to make that decision until you know what your costs of running your business are going to be," said Michael Reid, senior U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets. Nonfarm payrolls likely increased by 110,000 jobs last month after rising by 147,000 in June, a Reuters survey of economists showed. That reading would be below the three-month average gain of 150,000. Estimates ranged from no jobs added to an increase of 176,000 positions. An economist predicting no change in payrolls pointed to the jump in state and local government education jobs in June, which accounted for nearly half of the employment gains that month. "When the academic year ends, there is a huge drop in payroll levels at schools," said Stephen Stanley, chief U.S. economist at Santander U.S. Capital Markets. "The fact that there were fewer reductions than usual in June suggests to me that more of the usual wave of reductions came in July." Stanley also argued that there had been a torrent of anecdotal and survey evidence suggesting that businesses large and small slowed their hiring activity this summer in the face of elevated policy uncertainty. This led Stanley to anticipate private sector payrolls growth slowed further in July rather than accelerated as most economists expected after the economy added the fewest jobs in eight months in June. LOW BREAK-EVEN NUMBER Federal government job losses as the Trump administration wields the axe on headcount and spending, excluding immigration enforcement, could mount after the Supreme Court gave the White House the green light for mass firings. But the administration has also said several agencies were not planning to proceed with layoffs. The reduction in immigration flows means the economy now needs to create roughly 100,000 jobs per month or less to keep up with growth in the working age population. The decline in the unemployment rate to 4.1% in June was in part due to people dropping out of the labor force. July's anticipated rise would still leave the jobless rate in the narrow 4.0%-4.2% range that has prevailed since May 2024. "The July jobs report is unlikely to shake the Fed out of its 'wait-and-see' posture," said Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon. "But it will add further evidence that the labor market is gradually losing momentum." Financial markets have pushed back an anticipated September rate cut to October. With tariffs starting to raise inflation, some economists believe the window for the Fed resuming policy easing this year is closing. But others still believe the Fed could still cut rates in September, especially if the Bureau of Labor Statistics' preliminary payrolls benchmark revision in September projects a sharp decline in the employment level from April 2024 through March this year. The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, derived from reports by employers to the state unemployment insurance programs, has indicated a much slower pace of job growth between April 2024 and December 2024 than payrolls have suggested. "If it's an ugly downward revision, the Fed will move, there is no question," said Brian Bethune, an economics professor at Boston College.
