Piers Morgan releases statement about Jake Paul and ‘staged' career after boxer hires lawyer to fight ‘fix' claims

PIERS MORGAN has clarified his comments that Jake Paul's boxing career has been "staged" following news the YouTuber is taking legal action to fight claims his bouts are fixed.
Paul, 28, has reportedly taken legal steps to defend his reputation after persistent claims that his fights are rigged.

Paul has retained top attorney Alex Spiro to address and counteract what he and his team say are false and damaging comments.
Spiro, who has represented the likes of Elon Musk, Jay-Z and Alec Baldwin, said in a statement: "I've been retained by Mr. Paul to pursue legal redress for the damages he has suffered.
"If someone uses their public soapbox to harm him and the sport with lies, there will be consequences."
Paul has come under criticism for his boxing career to date and received a slew of claims of "rigged" and "fixed" fights following his unanimous decision win over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June.
Among those critics was Piers Morgan, who himself used the phrase "boring staged bull***t" to describe Paul's boxing career.
Now Morgan has taken to X to release a statement clarifying those comments.
He wrote: "I posted a few weeks ago that Jake Paul's boxing career has been 'boring staged bulls***.'
"What I meant is that his fights have been predominantly against older, past-their-prime opponents, which may be lucrative for both sides, and may have entertainment value.

"But don't reveal how he stacks up against currently ranked boxers and therefore are not a good look for the sport.
"I did not intend to suggest that the outcome was predetermined and certainly didn't mean to suggest anything illegal.
"But if reports are correct that Jake is now in negotiations to fight Anthony Joshua, that would obviously be a seriously credible bout against one of the best heavyweights in the world.
"Jake is welcome to come on Uncensored to discuss this, and verbally slug it out with me, anytime."
Paul's manager and co-founder of MVP promotions, Nakisa Bidarian, previously warned that comments labelling Paul's fight as rigged are defamatory and would be met with legal backlash.
Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, he said: "When you definitively state that Jake is putting on staged or rigged fights, that's just defamation, and you're causing substantial damage to his business, to MVP's business, and something that's 100 per cent not true."
Adding: "We're having to have conversations with our partners that are just unjustifiable. Our legal representation is looking at multiple individuals to go after."

NBA signs off on Boston Celtics' record $6.1bn sale to Bill Chisholm

A group headed by Bill Chisholm is set to take control of the Boston Celtics after the NBA's board of governors unanimously approved the sale on Wednesday. The NBA wrote in a statement, 'The transaction is expected to close shortly.' The reported $6.1bn valuation for the club makes it the second-largest sale price for a US sports franchise, behind the $10bn valuation for the Los Angeles Lakers when Mark Walter purchased that team in June. Chisholm and his partners are buying at least 51% of the Celtics. The ownership stake will increase in 2028, according to the purchase contract, when Chisholm's group is scheduled to buy out the remaining minority shareholders at a $7.3bn valuation. According to multiple media reports, Chisholm will take over as the Celtics' governor when the sale goes through. Outgoing owner Wyc Grousbeck is expected to serve as alternate governor and remain the CEO through 2028. Grousbeck will cede his role when he no longer has the required ownership stake of at least 15%. Chisholm, the co-founder and managing partner of the California-based private equity firm STG Partners, is a Massachusetts native and longtime Celtics fan. Grousbeck and the outgoing ownership group Boston Basketball Partners LLC purchased the Celtics for $360m in 2002. During that group's tenure, the club won NBA titles in 2007-08 and 2023-24 – the latter representing Boston's league-record 18th championship.

Jackson Holliday's walk-off double lifts Orioles past Mariners

August 14 - Jackson Holliday rapped a two-out, run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Baltimore Orioles found just enough late-game offense to defeat the visiting Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Wednesday night. Ryan Mountcastle homered and pinch hitter Jeremiah Jackson tripled in Baltimore's three-run seventh inning and lefty starter Trevor Rogers provided seven strong innings. Despite scoring twice in the top of the ninth, Seattle's season-best eight-game winning streak ended as it was held to six hits. The Orioles won for the third time in their last nine games. Dylan Carlson hit his second single of the game with two outs in the ninth before Holliday's game-winning hit. Mountcastle, who had two of his team's nine hits, tied the game on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh and the Orioles tacked on two more runs. Coby Mayo singled then scored on Jackson's triple, and on that play, Jackson raced home on first baseman Josh Naylor's throwing error. It was notable output for the Orioles after the Mariners blanked Baltimore 1-0 in Tuesday night's series opener. Rogers allowed only a seventh-inning run, holding the Mariners to four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Orioles reliever Dietrich Enns pitched a scoreless eighth, but Seattle's first two batters in the ninth reached base against Yennier Cano. A double steal put two runners in scoring position, with Eugenio Suarez scoring on Naylor's groundout before pinch hitter Dominic Canzone lofted a game-tying sacrifice fly off Keegan Akin (4-2). Mariners starter Logan Gilbert was sharp through six innings before running into trouble. He ended up being charged with two runs on four hits with two walks, with six strikeouts. Reliever Gabe Speier surrendered Jackson's triple. Matt Brash (1-1) later took the loss. Naylor's one-out single in the seventh inning drove Julio Rodriguez, who led off the frame with a triple, for Seattle's first run. Mountcastle's fourth homer of the season led off the bottom of the seventh, giving the Orioles their first run in the series. The game began after a 1-hour, 40-minute weather delay. --Field Level Media

Wife of ex Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden files for divorce after accusing him of abuse and sexting teens

Kate Bowman, the wife of former Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden, has filed for divorce form the musician, two weeks after accusing him of abuse and sexting teenagers. The fashion influencer filed for divorce on Wednesday after just three months of marriage, according to TMZ. She listed 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for their split, but did not provide a date of separation. Bowman — who was seen in Los Angeles earlier this month following her shocking allegations — is requesting spousal support, while also asking the court to prevent her ex, 46, from receiving any. As the couple has no children, there are no child custody or support issues to address. It's unclear if the couple, who have been together for over four years before tying the knot on May 6, have a prenup. It comes two weeks after Bowman accused him of physically attacking her, after she confronted him about sending inappropriate text messages to teenagers. 'He physically abused me,' Bowman said in court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, in regard to a series of events which unfolded on July 21. 'I'm now terrified of him.' Bowman said the bass player went 'insane' after she asked him about the alleged messages with the teenage girls - which allegedly centered around a rape fantasy. Bowman told the court that he grabbed her arms and slammed her body against a kitchen counter. 'He pulled me to the ground and was out of his mind,' Bowman told the court in her filing. Bowman described her efforts to flee the dangerous situation in her court filing. 'I managed to move around and escape him, got up, and ran out of the house to escape him,' she said. She continued: 'He ran after me in his underwear and barefoot, caught up to me, shoved me against the gate, and then tried to grab me back to the house.' Bowman said that she 'managed to escape and ran to the street' but Madden 'found [her] twice in different locations, physically abusing me each time.' Bowman included screengrabs in her filing from ring camera footage to support her claims. Bowman tried to retrieve Madden's phone, and says she wound up leaving the home afraid for her life. Bowman was able to rummage through the contents of the phone after she ran down the street and hid between cars after escaping the enraged musician's clutches, she said in court documents. Bowman told the court that Madden had never shown that level of outrage prior to their marriage. She was pointed out to the text-related allegations against Madden by a stranger, she said in the court filing. She told the court that she subsequently moved out of the home and has been residing with a friend in the wake of the conflict. Bowman told the court that Madden told her he was sorry via text message, and that he was planning on seeking help for sex addiction. She said she was concerned about Madden's potential mercurial reaction when he sees that she used a credit card of theirs to hire a lawyer in the wake of the July 21 incident. Bowman has asked for a restraining order preventing Madden from approaching within 100 yards of her person, place of business, residence or vehicle. She said that Madden has exerted monetary control over her for the duration of their four-year-plus relationship. Bowman said she has since started working a job, and is concerned that Madden will try to track her down at her work. She added that she's put a deposit down for an apartment where she will reside. Bowman is asking for expenses, in addition to custody of a pair of Siberian Husky dogs they own named Jam and Toast. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge granted Bowman a temporary restraining order in connection with the domestic violence allegations, but a request for Madden to vacate their home was not granted, pending a future hearing on the matter. Madden was the bass player for Maroon 5 - whose hits include moves like Makes Me Wonder, Moves Like Jagger and She Will Be Loved - for nearly 26 years, but departed the band in 2020. He stepped away from Maroon 5 in July of 2020 after he was arrested in connection with domestic violence 'I have some things that I need to deal with and address right now and so I have decided to take a leave of absence,' Madden said in a statement at the time. 'During this time, I do not want to be a distraction to my bandmates. I wish them the absolute best.'
