Anwar calls for stronger Asean research ties to cut medical costs

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said major companies have been earning excessive profits without considering the burden on consumers.
KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM) and other local medical research institutions to enhance collaboration with their counterparts across Asean to help lower the cost of medicine, accelerate medical discoveries, and develop treatments tailored to the region's needs.
He said CRM should also work closely with local universities, particularly medical faculties, to ensure that research efforts are impactful and serve the needs of the people.
'One of our key challenges is to prevent healthcare costs from escalating. The medical industry can become burdensome, as we've seen major companies earning excessive profits without considering the burden on consumers,' he said at the official opening of the CRM Trial Connect Conference 2025 here today.
Anwar added that a stronger and more coordinated Asean collaboration, involving major research centres in Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, and beyond, could pave the way for meaningful progress in clinical research.
Also present were health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad and Sarawak deputy premier Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as the state's minister for public health, housing and local government.

Unemployment rate hits 10-year low at 3% in April

Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the labour force is expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's unemployment rate dropped from 3.1% in March to 3% in April, the lowest in 10 years, according to a report released by the statistics department today. Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the number of unemployed people decreased by 0.7% to 525,900 in April 2025, compared with 529,600 in March. 'A promising national economic position has contributed to stable progress in Malaysia's labour force, with an increase in the number of employed people and higher labour force participation rates, while unemployment continues to decrease,' Bernama reported him as saying. Uzir said labour force numbers continued their upward trend in April, increasing by 0.2% to 17.34 million people compared with 17.31 million in March. 'Consequently, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 70.8% compared with 70.7% in March,' he said. In terms of the economic sector, Uzir said the services sector remained a key driver of employment growth, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation, food and beverage services, as well as transportation and storage activities. He said positive trends were also recorded across the manufacturing, construction, agriculture and mining and quarrying sectors. Uzir said the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24 years remained unchanged at 10.3% in April 2025, with 298.3 thousand unemployed youths. He said the number of people outside the labour force rose to 7.17 million in April compared with 7.16 million the previous month, mainly due to housework and family responsibilities, which accounted for 43.7%, followed by schooling and training reasons at 41.1%. Uzir said the country's labour force was expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. 'Despite global geopolitical tensions, Malaysia's labour force is expected to remain resilient due to stable unemployment, the growing services sector, and technology, as well as an increasing investment in digitalisation and automation,' he said.

Apec finance ministers to unveil new roadmap

Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said both Apec and Asean play a critical role in providing platforms for coordinated and collective action among their members. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) finance ministers will unveil a new roadmap in October to replace the existing Cebu Action Plan, deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said today. The five-year plan identifies medium-term initiatives and deliverables aimed at achieving Apec's Putrajaya Vision of 'an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community', she said. 'It is critical for Asean members to work together within Apec, to ensure that our common priorities in Southeast Asia are well-embedded in this new Asia Pacific roadmap and that initiatives in Asean and Apec are consistent with each other and mutually supportive,' she said at the Asean-BAC and Asia Pacific Financial Forum here. She said that both Apec and Asean play a critical role in providing platforms for coordinated and collective action among their members, as well as for enhanced government and regulatory engagement with the private sector. She added that new business models and rapid advances in technology could help redesign financing solutions to better serve micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and marginalised consumers. Lim said digital technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, as well as new products such as crypto and tokenised assets and digital currencies carried risks that were not yet fully understood. 'Enabling their safe and effective deployment would also require legal, policy and regulatory reforms, changes in industry practices and collaborative efforts to educate consumers, industry practitioners and regulators.' 'Private sector also to blame for Asean policy failures' Separately, Asean-BAC chair Nazir Razak said that while governments often faced scrutiny for policy shortcomings, private companies in the region were also responsible for failures to follow through on initiatives. 'As we contend with tech disruptions amid a backdrop of diminishing trust, the actions of state and regional actors are crucial. Poor execution and follow through will prove very costly.' He also lamented the slowdown in intra-Asean trade and investments and the ability of regional companies to attract investment into the region. However, he highlighted bright spots such as the expanding Asean QR code linkage as a critical milestone towards seamless payment connectivity. 'Digitalisation is the great enabler of financial inclusion but only if we ensure that it lifts all boats, not just the large or connected.'

Mida: Malaysia secures RM89.8b approved investments in Q1 2025, up 3.7 pc y-o-y

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Malaysia has secured RM89.8 billion in approved investments for the first quarter of 2025 (1Q 2025), a steady 3.7 per cent year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. In a statement today, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) said these investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. 'The results reflect continued investor confidence in the country's clear policies and long-term fundamentals, bucking the trend of cautious international capital flows due to geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility, and the intensifying global competition for fresh investments. 'Foreign investments (FIs) dominated the investment landscape, contributing RM60.4 billion or 67.3 per cent of total investments, while domestic investments (DIs) accounted for RM29.4 billion or 32.7 per cent,' it said. Besides job creation, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said the increase in the Managerial, Technical, and Supervisory (MTS) index to 46.3 per cent from 44.2 per cent in the same quarter last year reflects the country's success in creating higher-skilled, better-paying jobs. 'With a better integrated Asean economy, which we are working hard on as Asean chair, we are also paving the way for Malaysia's continued positioning as a manufacturing and services hub to this fast-growing 680-million strong region,' he said. He said the investment environment in 2025 is expected to remain challenging due to continued geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds from the US-China trade war. 'Nonetheless, although major markets' protectionist policies and supply chain frictions continue to weigh in on companies' investment decisions, Malaysia's clear policies should be able to attract more investments from Asia's growing economy, which is expected to expand to about 42 per cent of global gross domestic product by 2040,' he said. Besides bringing in good jobs and business opportunities, Mida chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the projects secured by Mida for 1Q 2025 supported the national effort to build a more diversified and resilient economy. 'To remain a choice location for high-performing companies, we will strengthen our local ecosystem as enablers and prepare our workforce to seize new job and leadership opportunities. 'By ensuring Malaysia remains relevant in global value chains, we can attract and anchor investments that benefit our economy, enterprises and people for the long haul,' he said. As of June 10, 2025, Mida is actively managing a robust pipeline of proposed projects, collectively valued at RM48.5 billion. 'The services sector leads this momentum, with 683 projects accounting for RM27.6 billion, while the manufacturing sector contributes RM20.9 billion across 89 projects. 'Complementing this pipeline, an additional RM59.3 billion in high-potential investment leads are currently under negotiation. These figures signal not only a healthy appetite for investment but also a growing confidence in Malaysia's economic fundamentals and policy direction,' it said. — Bernama
