Kelantan police confirm 80kg gold ransom demand in Tumpat jewellery shop kidnapping and extortion case

Malay Mail27-05-2025

KOTA BHARU, May 27 — Kelantan police yesterday confirmed that the actual amount of gold demanded in ransom by four suspects in a kidnapping and extortion case involving a jewellery shop owner in Palekbang, Tumpat was 80 kilogrammes (kg), with an estimated value of RM40 million and not 30kg according to earlier reports.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said they were informed of this by the 44-year-old victim in a statement to the police.
'The investigation also found that the suspects had been blackmailing the victim, who hails from Tumpat, for a long time.
'The victim claimed that the suspects had been demanding protection money for some time, but was too afraid to report it to the police due to concerns including the safety of his family,' he said when contacted yesterday.
He added that the victim also claimed to have handed over cash and jewellery worth millions of ringgit to the suspects over time.
'The investigation revealed that this case primarily involved extortion and escalated into a kidnapping because the victim refused to give (any more) money or gold as demanded by the suspects,' he explained.
On May 20, a viral video clip showed the victim's vehicle being blocked and was forcibly taken away in a grey Suzuki Swift but was later released. — Bernama

Myanmar man fatally stabbed in Tangkak, Johor cops hunting UNHCR cardholder suspect

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Less than two weeks after a man killed his wife by slashing her throat with a vegetable knife, another murder has rocked the district of Tangkak, Johor — this time involving two foreign nationals. The latest incident occurred around 7pm last night, when a Myanmar man was fatally stabbed with a sharp weapon, believed to be a knife, at a rented house along Jalan Kemajuan, according to a report published in Harian Metro. According to police, a quarrel had broken out between the victim and the suspect, a 24-year-old Myanmar national, who fled the scene after the attack. Tangkak district police chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the suspect holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card. Efforts to track down the suspect are ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to contact the Tangkak District Police Headquarters (IPD) hotline at 06-9785222 or the investigating officer at 019-2699573. On June 2, a woman was killed by her husband after a heated argument at a house in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir. That case only came to light the following day when the suspect surrendered at a police station.

Cyclist killed in Muar hit-and-run, police seeking suspect

MUAR, June 12 — Police are actively tracking down the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a foreign national along Jalan Kampung Raja, Jorak, Bukit Pasir on Wednesday night. Muar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said a report was received from a member of the public at around 8.30pm, according to a report published in Sinar Harian today. 'Preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred while the cyclist, a 53-year-old Nepalese man, was travelling from Parit Lanjut towards Jalan Kampung Raja. 'Upon reaching the scene, the victim is believed to have come into contact with an unidentified vehicle, likely approaching from behind, causing him to fall,' he said.
