Teen sexually assaulted after 500km trip to meet man she met on social media
Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the teenager returned home after four days and, at her family's urging, disclosed details of her journey and how she was molested. (Bernama pic) KOTA BHARU : A teenager was allegedly sexually assaulted after travelling over 500km with a friend to meet a man they met on social media, says Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat. The two schoolgirls, both aged 14, left their homes in Tumpat without their parents' knowledge and journeyed to Kulim, Kedah, to meet the man, believed to be in his 30s. 'They rode a kapcai motorcycle from Tumpat but experienced a breakdown in Grik, Perak. After leaving the bike, they flagged down a passing car, which took them to Kulim,' he told reporters after attending a town hall discussion at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan today. Once in Kulim, the suspect took one of the girls to a location where the alleged assault occurred. After four days, the teenager returned home and, at her family's urging, disclosed details of her journey and the incident. 'A police report was filed after a medical examination supported the girl's statement,' Yusoff said, adding that Kedah police had arrested a suspect to assist in the investigation. He urged parents to be more vigilant in monitoring their children's movements and online interactions, as social media platforms increasingly facilitate risky, unsupervised communication.

Police: Tumpat goldsmith's abduction linked to years-long extortion
KOTA BARU, May 27 — Police believe that four suspects involved in the recent kidnapping and extortion case against a goldsmith shop owner in Palekbang, Tumpat, are members of a criminal group active in the state. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the group is believed to be active in criminal activities in the state for a long time and had targeted several individuals for extortion. 'They are a group of criminals involved in extortion, including against the victim in this case, in addition to asking for protection money from the victim. 'This group is also believed to be involved in other criminal activities including drug trafficking and has links with criminal partners in neighbouring countries,' he told reporters today. According to him, the group may be facing difficulties in paying for drug supplies obtained from neighbouring countries following the strict action by the police after the cross-border ban since December last year. Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff reminded the public not to easily believe unverified reports regarding the case, including the assumption that the victim owed the suspect. 'Do not make unfounded assumptions. Let the police investigate and resolve this case as soon as possible,' he said. He said the criminal group involved is believed to have been extorting money from the victim for a long time, and most recently asked the victim to hand over 80 kilogrammes of gold, estimated to be worth approximately RM40 million. On May 20, a video clip went viral showing the victim's vehicle being stopped before he was forced into a grey Suzuki Swift. — Bernama

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The owner of a gold shop kidnapped by a group of men in Tumpat, Kelantan, on May 20 was allegedly forced to pay them protection money for over two years, say police. Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the 44-year-old finally lodged a police report, causing the suspects to kidnap him, although they released him the same day. He said the victim had not lodged a report earlier out of fear for his family's safety. 'The suspects demanded 80kg of gold, worth about RM35 million, from the victim. 'The victim refused to do so, leading to his kidnapping,' Berita Harian reported Yusoff as saying. He said two of the suspects had been identified as being from Tumpat, while two others had yet to be found. 'We will issue photofits of the suspects, who are believed to be still in the state,' he said. On May 20, a video spread on social media of the victim's car being blocked by the kidnappers, who forced him into a grey Suzuki Swift. Yusoff said the case was being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for abduction with the intent of secretly and wrongfully confining a person.

Kelantan police confirm 80kg gold ransom demand in Tumpat jewellery shop kidnapping and extortion case
KOTA BHARU, May 27 — Kelantan police yesterday confirmed that the actual amount of gold demanded in ransom by four suspects in a kidnapping and extortion case involving a jewellery shop owner in Palekbang, Tumpat was 80 kilogrammes (kg), with an estimated value of RM40 million and not 30kg according to earlier reports. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said they were informed of this by the 44-year-old victim in a statement to the police. 'The investigation also found that the suspects had been blackmailing the victim, who hails from Tumpat, for a long time. 'The victim claimed that the suspects had been demanding protection money for some time, but was too afraid to report it to the police due to concerns including the safety of his family,' he said when contacted yesterday. He added that the victim also claimed to have handed over cash and jewellery worth millions of ringgit to the suspects over time. 'The investigation revealed that this case primarily involved extortion and escalated into a kidnapping because the victim refused to give (any more) money or gold as demanded by the suspects,' he explained. On May 20, a viral video clip showed the victim's vehicle being blocked and was forcibly taken away in a grey Suzuki Swift but was later released. — Bernama
