KOTA BHARU : A teenager was allegedly sexually assaulted after travelling over 500km with a friend to meet a man they met on social media, says Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat.
The two schoolgirls, both aged 14, left their homes in Tumpat without their parents' knowledge and journeyed to Kulim, Kedah, to meet the man, believed to be in his 30s.
'They rode a kapcai motorcycle from Tumpat but experienced a breakdown in Grik, Perak. After leaving the bike, they flagged down a passing car, which took them to Kulim,' he told reporters after attending a town hall discussion at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan today.
Once in Kulim, the suspect took one of the girls to a location where the alleged assault occurred.
After four days, the teenager returned home and, at her family's urging, disclosed details of her journey and the incident.
'A police report was filed after a medical examination supported the girl's statement,' Yusoff said, adding that Kedah police had arrested a suspect to assist in the investigation.
He urged parents to be more vigilant in monitoring their children's movements and online interactions, as social media platforms increasingly facilitate risky, unsupervised communication.

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 — The Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will monitor online sales of vape and e-cigarette products following increased bans on vape use in several states and concerns over the presence of synthetic substances in these products. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the issue was raised during today's Cabinet meeting and is being reviewed by the Health Ministry (MoH). 'At the same time, I will direct MCMC to examine the online sale of such products. We have found that these sales are largely conducted on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. 'Any enforcement action will certainly involve the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN),' he told a weekly press conference here today. Fahmi said while vape-related issues fall under the Health Ministry's jurisdiction, the Communications Ministry will monitor the use of social media as a sales platform, particularly for e-cigarette products. 'Insya-Allah, MCMC will prepare a report on this matter, and the Communications Ministry will present it to the Cabinet for further discussion,' he said. He also reaffirmed the Communications Ministry's commitment to working closely with MoH and KPDN to ensure a safer internet environment, particularly for children and families, by addressing issues such as vape and e-cigarette advertisements. — Bernama

Penang offers 5pc housing discount for Indian Muslims under new Madani campaign
GEORGE TOWN, June 5 — The Penang state government will offer a five per cent discount to Indian Muslims for the purchase of residential and commercial units under the newly introduced Madani Home Ownership Campaign (MOC), part of the Madani Inclusive Property Sector Catalyst Policy. State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the discount would be available throughout the campaign period, from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, to boost the sale of such properties. 'In addition, the Penang State Housing Board has introduced a special category, Rumah MutiaraKu Type D (RMKu D), with a ceiling price of RM400,000, targeted at households earning up to RM15,000 a month. 'This category is not allowed to be sold on the open market and cannot be used to fulfil affordable housing compliance requirements,' he said during a press conference at Komtar today, alongside State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye. Sundarajoo also announced a reduction in contribution rates for developers who do not physically build RMKu Type A or B units-from RM120,000 to RM100,000 in areas under the Penang Island City Council, and from RM120,000 to RM72,500 under the Seberang Perai City Council. To ensure cash flow and timely delivery of RMKu units, Sundarajoo said the previous 20 per cent open market release limit has been increased to 50 per cent. However, a release fee of 10 per cent of the selling price will be imposed. He added that upgrade packages for open market units will be capped at 50 per cent of the base price, and such packages will not be allowed for PN1 units, to maintain transparency in compliance with the RMKu policy. Other incentives under the policy include waivers on the sale or purchase charges of RMKu A and B quotas for developers who do not meet the price-controlled unit requirements, as well as exemptions from conducting a social impact assessment report. Sundarajoo said the policy, which was approved during the state planning committee meeting No. 5/2025 on June 3, is expected to have a positive impact by boosting home ownership rates, encouraging approval of strategic new projects and fostering a more inclusive, sustainable and competitive property development ecosystem. 'We are confident the implementation of the MOC policy will help raise home ownership levels among Penangites. The state government will continue to review, refine and gather feedback from industry players and the public to improve and update these guidelines,' he said. Previous initiatives introduced by the state include the Home Ownership Campaign (HOC) and the Penang State Property Sector Stimulus Policy 2020, which was extended four times, most recently as HOC 3.0 PLUS, which ended on Dec 31 last year. — Bernama

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Federal tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing has urged his ministry to step up efforts to promote Sarawak's indigenous heritage, noting the persistence of outdated stereotypes about the state's indigenous communities among foreigners. 'Some still believe our native people live in the jungle,' he was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post. Tiong, the Bintulu MP, said he had urged ministry officers to 'go all out' in showcasing Sarawak's cultural heritage to tourists and Malaysians alike. He also highlighted the potential of community-based tourism, saying longhouse residents were open to developing homestay programmes. He said such programmes would allow tourists firsthand experience of the indigenous way of life. 'We'll be exploring this idea further to see how best we can move it forward in a way that respects tradition while embracing modern tourism, developing both culture and economy together side by side,' he said. Tiong also emphasised the importance of preserving Sarawak's traditional longhouses. He said longhouses like Rumah Raymond Plen were rare examples of how traditional longhouse architecture had been preserved in its full cultural richness. 'It's absolutely beautiful and full of character. Traditional longhouses like this are becoming increasingly rare in Bintulu, so finding one so well-preserved is truly something special.'
