Animal trainer and his girlfriend are arrested for killing 10 dogs in their care
Kwong 'Tony' Chun Sit, 53, and his girlfriend, Tingfeng Liu, 23, were arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on Thursday for animal cruelty and destruction of evidence after ten dogs reportedly died while in their care, according to investigators.
The Irvine Police Department said they received a call on Wednesday from a pet owner who claimed that they had received a message from their dog trainer saying that their dog has died in their sleep and has been cremated.
'The one family reached out to us [and] thought it was kind of suspicious that their healthy dog died with this trainer,' Kyle Oldoerp, a spokesperson for the Irvine Police Department, told The Los Angeles Times.
As the department's Animal Services Unit began investigating, they discovered that at least ten dogs had died in the trainer's care - with nine believed to have died on the same day.
Authorities said they then quickly recovered multiple dogs at different crematoriums.
'Our Animal Services Unit and patrol officers immediately began investigating the circumstances. In the initial stages of the investigation, it was determined that at least ten dogs had died in the trainer's care. IPD quickly recovered multiple dogs at different crematoriums,' a press release from the department reads.
Kwong 'Tony' Chun Sit, 53, and his girlfriend, Tingfeng Liu, 23, were arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on Thursday for animal cruelty and destruction of evidence after ten dogs reportedly died while in their care
Based on suspicious activity - including the attempted cremation of the animals - Sit and Liu were arrested.
Police are now working with veterinary professionals to perform necropsies and determine whether the deaths were accidental or intentional.
'We are working closely with veterinary professionals who will perform necropsies to determine how the dogs died. Our priority is determining if the death of the dogs was accidental or intentional,' the department's statement continued.
'If they all died of an accidental poisoning, or something that was all the same, then it's like, OK, maybe this is accidental,' Oldoerp said. 'But if it's not, and they're different causes, then that could take us down a different path.'
Sit, who worked with pet owners across Southern California under various business names - including 'Happy K9 Academy' - is facing serious scrutiny.
The academy, which specializes in 'obedience, behavior modification, and service dog training,' advertised a compassionate approach to dog training on its Yelp page.
Numerous pet owners have since taken to social media to post one-star reviews, sharing similar stories of their dogs dying while in Sit's care
'At Happy K9, our mission is simple yet profound – to enhance the bond between you and your furry best friend through effective, compassionate training. We believe that every dog has the potential to be a well-behaved, joyful companion, and our aim is to unlock that potential,' the company wrote on its Yelp page.
However, numerous pet owners have since taken to social media to post one-star reviews, sharing similar stories of their dogs dying while in Sit's care.
'I would give zero stars if I could. Do NOT send your dog here unless you want to be told that your dog died peacefully and the body has been cremated without consent. Shameful. There's a special place in hell for you Tony,' a user by the name Jessica J. posted to Yelp.
'Tony killed my dog Saint! he lied and said that she died peacefully in her sleep - she had no illnesses!! he sent her off to get cremated without our consent!!!! he sent a text HOURS after she died not even a phone call!!' Aimee L. of Glendale, wrote.
'My 5 month old Pomeranian, Cody, died under the care of Tony Sit. My Angel Cody was a healthy dog with a great personality, full of energy and full of love! The night my Cody died apparently 9 innocent dogs died too!' Mary B., a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes wrote.
'I'm praying that the parents of these innocent dogs find comfort and peace knowing that justice will be done to this monster! praying that this monster never be allowed to hurt another innocent dog ever again! I'm so sorry Cody my baby that I trusted this monster!' the user added.
Another user, posting under the name Amelia S., of Los Angeles, wrote: 'Not ok to have multiple dogs who died same day and not own some mistake, foul play, poison, or heat exposure or something!'
'This man needs to never ever be able to touch a pet again and go behind bars for a very long time!! Very unhappy pet lover! NEVER EVER CONSIDER THIS SERVICE!' the post continued.
The police department is urging people who may have used Sit's services and were notified of their dog's sudden passing while in this care to contact the Irvine Police Department.
The investigation is ongoing.

Chinese man jailed for 8 years in US for smuggling arms to North Korea
A Chinese man has been sentenced to eight years in jail for smuggling firearms to North Korea that he believed would be used in a surprise attack on South Korea, the US justice department has said. Shenghua Wen, 42, from California, admitted to receiving around $2m (£1.5m) from North Korean officials for shipping two containers loaded with weapons and other items from Long Beach, California to North Korea, via Hong Kong, in 2023. He pleaded guilty in June to the charge of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government. The Chinese national arrived in the US from China on a student visa in 2012 and remained illegally after his visa expired in December 2023. Before coming to the US, he met with North Korean officials at an embassy in China, where he was asked to procure goods for Pyongyang. Wen told investigators he believed the weapons were intended for a surprise attack on South Korea, and admitted to attempting to purchase uniforms to disguise North Korean soldiers, according to a criminal complaint filed in September. Describing Wen as an illegal alien, the US justice department said two North Korean officials contacted him in 2022 via an online messaging platform and instructed him to smuggle illegal items to North Korea. A year later he bought a business called Super Armory, a federal firearms licensee, in Houston for $150,000 to carry out operations and registered it under his business partner's name in Texas. He then sent at least three containers of firearms via Hong Kong and filed false information about the container's contents with US customs. One of the containers, which was documented as carrying refrigerators, docked at a Hong Kong port in January 2024 before it left for Nampo, North Korea. Last September, Wen brought 60,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition to his home in Ontario, a suburb of Los Angeles, with the intention of shipping them to North Korea. They were stored in a van parked in the driveway. Investigators also seized "sensitive technology" meant to be sent to North Korea, including a device to detect and identify hazardous chemicals and a transmission detection device. The justice department said that Wen also acquired or offered to acquire a civilian airplane engine and a thermal imaging system that could be mounted on a drone, helicopter, or other aircraft, and could be used for reconnaissance and target identification. North Korea has continued to circumvent international sanctions to procure items of all kinds from the outside world. Despite bans on luxury items for ordinary citizens, North Korea continues to acquire high-end cars, watches, liquor, and electronics via middlemen and grey markets.

Prosecutors say Sean 'Diddy' Combs' request for acquittal or new trial should be swiftly rejected
Federal prosecutors are urging a federal judge to quickly reject Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' request that he throw out a jury verdict or order a new trial after a jury convicted the music maven of two prostitution-related charges. Prosecutors said in papers filed shortly before midnight Wednesday that Combs masterminded elaborate sexual events for two ex-girlfriends between 2008 and last year that involved hiring male sex workers who sometimes were required to cross multiple state lines to participate. A jury in July exonerated the Bad Boy Records founder of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges that carried the potential penalty of a mandatory 15 years in prison up to life behind bars. But it convicted him of two lesser Mann Act charges that prohibit interstate commerce related to prostitution. The Mann Act charges each carry a potential penalty of 10 years behind bars. Combs has been denied bail despite his lawyers' arguments that their client should face little to no additional jail time for the convictions. Prosecutors said he must serve multiple years behind bars. Combs has been in a federal jail in Brooklyn since his September arrest at a Manhattan hotel. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 3. Prosecutors wrote that Combs' attorneys were mistaken when they contended in a submission to the judge late last month that the Mann Act was unduly vague and violates his due process and First Amendment rights. ' Evidence of the defendant's guilt on the Mann Act counts was overwhelming,' prosecutors wrote. They noted that the multiday, drug-fueled sexual marathons that Combs demanded of his girlfriends involved hiring male sex workers and facilitating their travel across multiple states for what became known as 'freak-offs' or 'hotel nights.' Prosecutors said he then used video recordings he made of the sexual events to threaten and coerce the girlfriends to continue participating in the sometimes weekly or monthly sexual meetings. 'At trial, there was ample evidence to support the jury's convictions,' prosecutors said. They said Combs 'masterminded every aspect' of the sexual meetups, paying escorts to travel across the country to participate and directing the sexual activity that took place between the men and his girlfriends 'for his own sexual gratification' while sometimes joining in. Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, an R&B artist who dated Combs from 2008 through 2018, testified during the trial that Combs sometimes demanded the sexual meetups with male escorts every week, often leaving her too exhausted to work on her music career. She said she participated in hundreds of 'freak-offs.' A woman who testified under the pseudonym 'Jane' said she participated in 'hotel nights' when she dated Combs from 2021 to last September and that the events sometimes lasted multiple days and required her to have sex with male sex workers, even when she was not well. Both women testified that Combs had threatened to release videos he made of the encounters as a way of controlling their behavior. 'During these relationships, he asserted substantial control over Ventura and Jane's lives. Specifically, he controlled and threatened Ventura's career, controlled her appearance, and paid for most of her living expenses, taking away physical items when she did not do what he wanted,' prosecutors wrote. 'The defendant similarly paid Jane's $10,000 rent and threatened her that he would stop paying her rent if she did not comply with his demands,' they said. In their submission requesting acquittal or a new trial, Combs' lawyers argued that none of the elements normally used for Mann Act convictions, including profiting from sex work or coercion, existed. 'It is undisputed that he had no commercial motive and that all involved were adults,' the lawyers said. 'The men chose to travel and engage in the activity voluntarily. The verdict confirms the women were not vulnerable or exploited or trafficked or sexually assaulted.' The lawyers said that Combs, 'at most, paid to engage in voyeurism as part of a 'swingers' lifestyle' and argued that 'does not constitute 'prostitution' under a properly limited definition of the statutory term.'
