Gokarna cave saga: Karnataka HC halts deportation of Russian woman's kids; cites child rights
NEW DELHI: Karnataka High Court has temporarily halted the deportation of a Russian woman's two children, emphasising that their best interests as mandated by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Nina Kutina (40) and her daughters Preya (6) and Ama (4) were rescued by police from the Ramatirtha cave in Gokarna, Uttara Kannada, on July 11. She had continued staying there despite her visa having expired, as per officials.
Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav passed the order while hearing a writ petition filed against the sudden deportation notice issued to the children.

The petitioner, represented by advocate Beena Pillai, told the court that the deportation ignored the children's welfare and violated the principles of the UNCRC.
The assistant solicitor general, appearing for the Union of India, informed the court that the children do not currently possess valid travel or identity documents.
Based on this submission, the court observed that immediate deportation was not reasonable at this stage
The bench also ordered a detailed hearing and asked the authorities to file a written affidavit confirming the absence of documents and submit objections within two weeks.
The court further directed that no deportation should take place without informing the bench first, effectively pausing any further action until the next hearing on August 18.

OPEC+ sources told Reuters that the same group would reconvene on September 7, when they may evaluate whether to reintroduce another layer of cuts amounting to roughly 1.65 million bpd, measures that are officially extended through the end of next year. The broader OPEC+ coalition, comprising 10 non-OPEC producers including Russia and Kazakhstan, has historically curbed production to stabilise prices. However, the alliance pivoted this year, aiming to reclaim lost market share, a move aligned with calls from Trump urging the group to increase supply. The phased hikes began in April with a 138,000-bpd boost, followed by steeper increments of 411,000 bpd over the next three months, 548,000 bpd in August, and now 547,000 bpd for September. 'So far the market has been able to absorb very well those additional barrels also due to stockpiliing activity in China,' said Giovanni Staunovo of UBS. 'All eyes will now shift on the Trump decision on Russia this Friday." As well as the voluntary cut of about 1.65 million bpd from the eight members, OPEC+ still has a 2-million-bpd cut across all members, which also expires at the end of 2026. First witness testifies against Sheikh Hasina in trial for 2024 Bangladesh protest violence
The first witness in the trial of Bangladesh's fugitive ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina gave evidence on Sunday, a man shot in the face during protests that toppled her last year. (File Photo/AP) Hasina, 77, who has defied court orders to return from India to attend her trial on charges amounting to crimes against humanity, is accused of ordering a deadly crackdown in a failed bid to crush the student-led uprising. Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024, according to the United Nations. The first witness, among the 11 cases that the prosecution is expected to present to the court, was Khokon Chandra Barman, whose story reflects the violence of the protests. The 23-year-old wears a mask to conceal his face, which was ripped apart by gunshot during the culmination of the protests on August 5, 2024, the same day that Hasina fled Dhaka by helicopter. "I want justice for the ordeal I've been going through, and for my fellow protesters who sacrificed their lives," he told the court. Barman lost his left eye, while his right eye was damaged, as well as his lips, nose and teeth. A video showing Barman's blood-covered face was played in court, with the opening statements aired on the state-run broadcaster. Prosecutors have filed five charges against Hasina -- including failure to prevent mass murder -- which amount to crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law. "Sheikh Hasina was the nucleus around whom all the crimes committed during the July-August uprising revolved," chief prosecutor Tajul Islam told the court on Sunday. Hasina is on trial in absentia alongside two other accused. One, her former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, is also a fugitive. The other, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the former inspector general of police, is in custody. He has pleaded guilty. Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said he wanted a "fair trial", speaking to reporters outside the court. "People were killed and maimed -- we demand the highest punishment for the crimes committed," Asaduzzaman said. Amir Hossain, the state-appointed lawyer for Hasina, noted that Barman was shot during the chaotic final day of the weeks-long protests. He pointed out that several police officers were also killed in clashes with protesters and it was "unclear who actually shot Barman". Hossain said he was not in contact with Hasina, who has refused to accept the authority of the court. The trial continues.

PM Modi, Amit Shah meet President Murmu separately
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu separately within hours at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here. It was not known the reasons behind the subsequent meetings of the prime minister and the home minister with the President. "Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan," the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on 'X'. Hours later, the Rashtrapati Bhavan again wrote on 'X', "Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." The home minister also wrote on 'X' sharing a picture of his meeting with President Murmu. "Called on Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji at Rashtrapati Bhavan." However, there is no words so far from the prime minister's office. This was the first meeting of the prime minister with the President after his recent visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives. The meetings came against the backdrop of the logjam in Parliament over the Opposition's demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections in the state. Except discussions in both Houses on Operation Sindoor, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21. Also, the Lok Sabha last week approved the extension of the President's rule in Manipur for six more months, while the Rajya Sabha is yet to take up the motion for discussion. The President's rule was imposed in the Northeastern state on February 13. The prime minister's meeting with the President also came days after US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on exports from India and an unspecified penalty because of New Delhi's purchases of Russian military equipment and oil. The meetings also came nearly two weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 tendered his resignation as vice president to the President citing health grounds. The vice president also functions as the chairman of Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission last week announced that election of vice president will take place on September 9. The electoral college for the vice-presidential election comprises all elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and all members of the Lok Sabha.
