Bloomberg2 days ago

Australian home prices climbed for a fourth straight month, driven by a second interest rate cut by the country's central bank and expectations more will follow later this year.
The Home Value Index advanced 0.5% in May, with every major city recording a rise, property consultancy Cotality, formerly CoreLogic Inc, said in a statement on Monday. Darwin was the top gainer, climbing 1.6%, followed by Perth which rose 0.7%. The bellwether market of Sydney was up 0.5% and Melbourne increased 0.4%.

Australia's central bank expects global trade uncertainty will weigh on the domestic economy and employment, according to a senior official, helping explain policymakers' surprise switch to a dovish stance last month. 'The baseline forecast is for recent global developments to contribute to slower economic growth in Australia and a slightly weaker labor market,' Reserve Bank Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter said in a speech in Brisbane on Tuesday. She added that the RBA expects the price of tradable goods will be 'slightly dampened' too.

RBA Opted for Smaller Cut to Stay Predictable in Uncertain Times

Australia's central bank discussed the case to cut interest rates by an outsized half-percentage point last month, highlighting that a larger reduction would provide greater insurance for the economy against any major US-led trade upheaval. The Reserve Bank ultimately decided to lower borrowing costs by a quarter-point, as widely anticipated, in part to ensure that 'monetary policy settings remained predictable at a time of heightened uncertainty,' according to minutes of the May 19-20 meeting released on Tuesday. The case to ease by 25 basis points to bring the cash rate to 3.85% was the 'stronger one,' the board concluded.

Australia Cracks Down on Crypto ATMs as Scams, Fraud Uncovered

Australia's financial crimes agency placed curbs on cryptocurrency automatic teller machines as the surging number of kiosks increasingly attract fraudsters and scammers. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, known as Austrac, placed a A$5,000 ($3,250) limit on cash deposits and withdrawals as part of new measures to safeguard consumers, according to a statement Tuesday. It's also refused to renew the registration of one crypto ATM provider.
