MOE relaxes transfer rules for teachers with two years of service
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the applications can also be made without any additional conditions
'This decision was made after taking into account various views as well as the MADANI government's commitment to the well-being of teachers,' she said in her speech at the 54th National Teachers' Day celebration here today.
Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Previously, teachers were not allowed to apply for transfers within the first three years of service.
Fadhlina said the ministry has appointed 1,470 teacher assistants for 2025, with selected schools -based on set criteria, to receive two assistants each.
'MOE will also send selected teachers and officers for short-term overseas courses to gain knowledge and experience in specialised fields. This initiative involves an allocation of RM4 million,' she added.
At the event, Fadhlina announced that 32 teachers will be sent to international schools in the United Kingdom at no cost under the Global Immersion For Future-Ready Teachers (GIFT) programme.
In addition, she said teachers will be entitled to a 20 per cent discount on flight tickets through the MH GOM portal, with further details to be announced later.

KUCHING, Aug 17 — Sarawak's bid to expand the use of English in schools will be among the main issues discussed at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Technical Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the demand was among the main matters to be raised by Sarawak representatives at the meeting, Malay news agency BH Online reported today. He said the discussion would include education policy challenges that currently limit the implementation of teaching in English. 'Tomorrow I will hear the report at the MA63 technical committee meeting and one of the matters brought up is related to the education field demanded by Sarawak,' he was quoted as saying after the Madani Executive Talk Programme at the Sarawak branch of the Aminuddin Baki Institute here today. Fadillah explained the talks aim to find ways to facilitate the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in English in Sarawak. He said one possible approach would be to maintain the national policy while introducing improvements or special provisions for Sarawak. 'Maybe we maintain the basic policy but add enhancements according to Sarawak's needs,' he was quoted as saying. He added that the autonomy sought is not full independence but a level deemed appropriate, to be decided at tomorrow's meeting. The MA63 technical committee is also expected to discuss other matters, including the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre and healthcare infrastructure needs in the state.

NUTP welcomes reminder on smoking, vaping ban
PETALING JAYA: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) welcomes the recent reminder issued by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek regarding the ban on smoking and vaping in schools. NUTP said it serves as an important alert to all stakeholders, especially educators. Its president Aminuddin Awang said Fadhlina's statement should not be viewed as a threat, but rather as an effort to highlight existing laws. 'I believe what was said serves as a reminder to all parties not to smoke within school premises,' Aminuddin told theSun when contacted. 'If she had not raised it in Parliament, perhaps many teachers would remain unaware of it. The regulation states that a person can be fined up to RM10,000 or even face imprisonment, but that does not mean the punishment would be (applied) to everyone. It is more of a warning to raise awareness.' He added that the union has no issues with the statement and hopes it would be taken positively by all teachers and school staff. Responding to claims that certain teachers smoke in schools, Aminuddin said such allegations are inaccurate and do not reflect the majority of educators in the country. 'To say that teachers are smokers is not accurate. The numbers are not significant and the majority of our teachers are not smokers. Even if a small number do smoke, they do not do so openly in front of students.' The issue of smoking in schools came into the spotlight following the education minister's statement in Parliament, in which she reiterated the firm stance of the government on maintaining smoke-free school environments under the existing law. In her written reply in Parliament on Aug 12, Fadhlina said: 'Teachers found vaping or smoking within school premises may face legal action such as fines of up to RM10,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, in accordance with the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024.' She was responding to a question raised by Padang Terap MP Nurul Amin Hamid, who asked about measures taken by the ministry to curb the culture of vaping among school students. Nurul Amin had also claimed some teachers vape in public. This led MCA Education Consultative Committee deputy chairperson Felicia Y.T. Wong to question the necessity of imposing steep fines and jail sentences on teachers found smoking or vaping. Wong said such severe penalties suggest these measures are the default response to the offences, unfairly targeting teachers who are insufficiently appreciated. 'In the Dewan Rakyat in 2023, Education Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh reported that 6,394 teachers went on early retirement, an increase from the previous year during which 5,306 left. 'According to the Education Ministry in a parliamentary written reply on June 26 last year, the majority of teachers left early because they were uninterested in their roles,' Wong added. Several teachers polled by theSun expressed concern that the penalties are too severe, adding that imprisoning educators could create further complications. 'About half of the male teachers at my school are smokers or vapers. If we were all sent to prison, the school would face a shortage and need many replacement teachers,' said a 29-year-old teacher from the Klang Valley, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

PM: RM5bil recovered from graft cases in past year

The Prime Minister said these were recovered from ministries, government agencies and politicians. 'There are taunts and cynicism towards the government's hard stance on fighting corruption. 'But over the past year, we have recovered RM4bil to RM5bil in assets and funds seized from corruption cases across ministries, departments, Immigration, Customs and even politicians. 'This is due to our competence and willingness to take action (against corruption). 'This is also only possible with good governance,' he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the RM6.26bil Ipoh Sentral project. On another matter, the Prime Minister expressed hope to see more developments and projects that are in line with the Madani concept. 'Our nation must always be concerned and compassionate towards the people; otherwise, Madani is nothing more than a slogan. 'We need to have aspects that can elevate culture, civilisation and new technologies of the people,' he added. Anwar also hopes to see unique-looking buildings that are suitable for the country's environment, current needs, culture and heritage. 'We want to see Ipoh have a special landmark, with cultural vibrancy rooted in heritage, yet modern and embracing new technologies, digitalisation and artificial intelligence,' he added. At an event earlier, Anwar reaffirmed that those responsible for the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir will be brought to justice but called on parties not to manipulate the case in ways that create negative perceptions. While giving assurance that no individual will be allowed to escape accountability, the Prime Minister said the case, however, should not resort to insulting specific individuals. 'The police are investigating (the matter), and I have made it clear that it doesn't matter who (is involved); they will be investigated,' he said when launching the Madani Dairy Entrepreneurs Carnival yesterday, Bernama reported. The Prime Minister said the government will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the nation's food security, including the dairy industry. Expressing pride in the achievements of local dairy producer Farm Fresh Bhd, he praised the company for its contribution to the dairy sector, job creation for Malaysians and commitment to corporate social responsibility. Anwar also pointed out that Malaysia's close ties with its regional partners, especially within Asean, have opened up broad opportunities for cooperation in various fields, including agriculture and dairy. He noted that this sector's success is also supported by the readiness of the private sector, the resilience of local entrepreneurs, and the integration of modern technology, including artificial intelligence.
