Protests in Assam on August 8 against state govt's Hindu Bangladeshi decision
Guwahati: The All-Assam Students' Union (AASU) has announced a protest on August 8 against the state government's directive to the Foreigners' Tribunal (FT) to withdraw cases pending in Tribunals against illegal Hindu Bangladesh immigrants. The students' union will burn copies of the government's directive across all district headquarters on Friday. AASU President Utpal Sarma said, 'This is a betrayal of the people of Assam. The government cannot selectively protect illegal immigrants based on religion. There must be no religious affiliation in determining illegality.' Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Debabrata Saikia has asked all political parties and civil society groups to resist what he described as the state government's attempts to 'nullify the Assam Accord'.
Referring to government's July-17 directive asking district authorities and Foreigners' Tribunals to drop cases against six religious communities - Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis, Saikia said that it contradicts the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, as stipulated in Assam Accord.
The order from the state government stated, 'The DCs and Sr. SPs to take a review of the status of all the Foreigners (Pakistani/ Bangladeshi/ Rohingya). As per the amendments made to the Citizenship Act, the FTs, are, not supposed to pursue cases of foreigners belonging to the six specified communities (Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi and Jain communities) who had entered Assam on or prior to 31.12.2014. It was suggested to stop all such cases., In this regard, the district Commissioner and the Senior SPs should immediately convey a meeting with their respective FT member end also reviews the development periodically and submit the action taken report to this department." It added, 'However, such foreigners should be encouraged and supported for applying for Indian citizenship as per provisions of Citizenship Amendment Act. The Government of Assam had issued clear cut instructions for withdrawal of all cases filed against people belonging to Gorkha and Koch Rajbongshi communities, this should be complied with forthwith. Assam had witnessed violent protests in 2019 and early 2020 after Parliament passed the CAA, which makes minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. Five people were killed in the protests. Assam Accord inked after six yearlong foreigners' movement (1979-1985) provides that foreigners who entered the state after the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, irrespective of their religious affiliation must be deported.

Asaduddin Owaisi calls Pahalgam attack painful, vows to boycott India-Pak match
AIMIM Chief and veteran Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi, in an exclusive podcast with India Today, said he will not watch the upcoming India vs Pakistan cricket match in Dubai as part of the Asia Cup.'I am surprised and shocked that we are playing a cricket match with Pakistan in Dubai. I will not watch it,' Owaisi said. 'How can you jump and play cricket when the Prime Minister himself has said many times that water and blood cannot flow together, and that talks and terrorism cannot go together?'advertisementCalling cricket in India 'an obsession' that brings everything to a standstill, Owaisi said the recent Pahalgam terror attack, where people were shot in front of their families, had deeply pained him. 'The incident was horrific. It is painful that someone can be shot in front of their wives and children. To me, it makes no sense to play a cricket match with Pakistan when we have taken such stringent measures,' he said. When asked why India is playing under such circumstances, he said the answer lies with the BCCI and the government, which permitted the to Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that there is 'nothing called Hindu terror,' Owaisi asked, 'Who killed Mahatma Gandhi? Who killed Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi? Who killed the Sikhs in the streets of Delhi? Who is killing police personnel in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh?'"Terrorism has become a new religion and these terrorists do all the acts in the name of religion," he said. "Amit Shah may have forgotten who killed Mahatma Gandhi. Nathuram Godse was the first terrorist of independent India," he GOVERNMENT IN PARLIAMENT FOR ALLOWING CRICKET MATCH In a fiery speech in Parliament earlier during the ongoing Monsoon Session, Owaisi questioned the decision to play cricket with Pakistan while trade and water treaties remain suspended. 'Does your conscience permit playing a cricket match with Pakistan? You've cut off trade ties, shut down airspace but you're still ready to play cricket?' he further demanded accountability for the security lapse in Pahalgam, questioning how terrorists could enter and kill civilians despite a heavy military presence. He also criticised the government's Kashmir policy, claiming deterrence had failed despite the abrogation of Article 370.- EndsMust Watch

Next-Gen BrahMos in pipeline, says DRDO chief in Pune
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 9 (ANI): DRDO is looking to build a next-generation BrahMos missile, which will be a lighter, smaller version of the current version, the organisation's Chairman and Department of Defence Secretary (R&D) Samir V Kamat said on Saturday. BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) will be able to fit into any platform, unlike the current missile, which can only be used with the Sukhoi aircraft, the DRDO chief added. 'We are looking at BrahMos-NG, which is a smaller version of BrahMos, which can then be fitted on all our other platforms. Today, BrahMos can only be fitted on the Sukhoi platform, but if we can make it smaller, we can fit it on all our platforms. We are planning to start it soon," he at a press conference in Pune on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kamat also highlighted the pivotal role of indigenous technologies, including the BrahMos missile and Akashteer air defence system, in Operation Sindoor.'When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, which was launched from our Sukhoi Mark 1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akashteer system, the anti-drone system," he added. Kamat further mentioned how the Akashteer network helped in identifying any threats coming towards India, and also in deciding what kind of weapon could be used to neutralise such threats.'All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. This is broadly what I can say without getting into too much," the DRDO Chairman while also expressing pride over the growing strength of India's defence research and development sector, Kamat mentioned, 'It's indeed a proud moment for all of us. It's a reflection of the strength of our R&D and production in the defence domain. I'm sure going ahead, this number will keep increasing."Earlier, it was reported that the annual defence production has achieved a record high of Rs 1,50,590 crore for the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. The milestone represents a robust 18 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90 per cent increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore.
