'Lost for words but unbelievably proud,' says director of rugby

THE way in which Warrington Wolves had Challenge Cup glory snatched away from them left Gary Chambers feeling 'lost for words.'
However, the club's director of rugby declared himself 'unbelievably proud' of how the organisation as a whole handled the occasion despite falling to defeat against Hull KR.

For the second year in a row, Chambers and The Wire must pick themselves up from Wembley heartbreak although the way in which this game turned against them may make that task even tougher.
Leading 6-2 and having generally enjoyed the better of proceedings, they were just two minutes away from victory when Tom Davies' try chalked off their lead, with Mikey Lewis' conversion snatching an 8-6 victory for the Super League-leading Robins.
Having opted to keep their build-up as relaxed and low-key as possible, their approach was so close to being a masterstroke and Chambers admitted he thought the players had the game in the bag.
But despite the agonising way in which their day ended, he says he cannot find any criticism of how they handled things.

'You've got to play for 80 minutes, haven't you? But I can't knock anybody in there – they're absolutely devastated,' he said when speaking to the Warrington Guardian post-match.
'They showed what they can do – they applied themselves brilliantly and I'm unbelievably proud of them, but it's just the game.
'I'm literally lost for words – I was sat there thinking we had it.
'The message coming off the pitch was that everybody was feeling good, they were in control and they knew what they had to do.
'It felt like we were in a good place – there was a bit of confusion when Duff (Matt Dufty) had to come off quick because of his injury but up until then, we were focused and the game plan was working.

'Our prep had been good, but you just never know with this game.'
Warrington are now tasked with turning around an inconsistent Super League season which sees them sit eighth in the table, two points outside of the play-off spots.
They return to league action at Leeds Rhinos on Saturday and once the pain eases, Chambers expects the players to gain confidence from how they attacked the occasion.
'Before the game, the talk outside was 'what was the point in them even turning up?' he said.
'They did turn up and they more than made a spectacle of it.
'They acquitted themselves really well. They'll kick on from this and they will push on.'

Sacked ref Coote given ban by FA for Klopp video

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been given an eight-week suspension by the Football Association for comments made about ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on social media. Coote, who was sacked by the Premier League in December 2024, has been further sanctioned by the FA for an "aggravated breach" of rule E3.2, because of the reference he made to Klopp's nationality in the video. The clip, which was filmed around July 2020, was leaked online in November 2024. Coote admitted the charge. More to follow. Former Premier League referee Coote gets 8-week ban for offensive comments about Klopp

LONDON (AP) — Former Premier League referee David Coote has been banned for eight weeks and ordered to take a face-to-face education program for making offensive comments about Jürgen Klopp in a private video that ended up being widely circulated on social media, leading to the match official getting fired. Coote admitted to a Football Association charge of acting 'in an improper manner' and/or using 'abusive and/or insulting words' in a video recorded around July 2020. Two videos, apparently filmed using a phone, circulated on social media appearing to show Coote giving his personal opinion on Liverpool and Klopp, its long-time former manager, when asked by an unidentified man. Coote uses an expletive for Liverpool and a derogatory term for Klopp, saying he disliked the German manager because he was 'arrogant' and 'accused me of lying' after one game. The FA charge including an allegation that Coote's actions constituted an 'aggravated breach' of rules because they 'included a reference — whether express or implied — to nationality.' An independent regulatory commission announced on Tuesday it had imposed the new sanctions on Coote following a hearing. Coote was initially suspended for his conduct and then fired in December because his position was deemed 'untenable' by English soccer's referees body following an investigation into his conduct. Coote was also investigated by the FA following allegations in British newspaper The Sun that he discussed with a fan the possibility of giving a yellow card to a player in a match. The former referee denied any wrongdoing and the FA said in June that no charges were issued in relation to that investigation. Separately, UEFA launched an investigation into Coote following a video, again published by The Sun, allegedly showing him using cocaine during the European Championship this year. ___ AP soccer:

More question than answers as losing start continues

Why? Why? Why? After falling to another 2-0 defeat in the league the Red Army were left with more questions than answers as our search for our first points and goals of the season continue. Why did Jimmy Thelin continue with a back four when a three worked so effectively last time we faced Celtic? Why were Graeme Shinnie and Sivert Nilsen paired up in midfield when that hasn't proved to be the most effective, or pacey, partnership? Why have we offered Kusini Yengi a three-year deal? The Aussie forward's Aberdeen career continues to wait for lift-off. I said in my pre-season thoughts our start wouldn't be as exciting as last, and with no league game until the end of August we will continue to look up at the rest of the table for a few weeks yet. Six points is a must from our next two Premiership outings - Falkirk and Livingston at home. I don't think the panic button needs hit yet, but is there cause for concern given it is five league wins in 29 games. it is imperative we get a victory at Morton in the League Cup this weekend to get some feelgood factor before the Europa League play-off.
