General Women's Union to participate in 69th session of Commission on Status of Women in New York

ABU DHABI (WAM) The General Women's Union (GWU) will participate in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) which will convene in New York from March 10-21, 2025, focusing on reviewing progress toward gender equality.This year's gathering will focus on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA), alongside the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly, which reaffirmed global commitments to women's rights and empowerment and the realisation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Amid a rapidly changing and unpredictable landscape and with global leaders, policymakers and advocates in attendance, CSW69 aims to strengthen commitments and accelerate progress toward a more just and equal world.The review will include an assessment of current challenges that affect the implementation of the Platform for Action and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and its contribution towards the full realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.The GWU delegation, which is led by Noura Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the General Women's Union (GWU), will engage in five high-level side events on the margins of the CSW69: Women and Technology: Inspiring Stories in the GCC Countries; Realising the Promise of Beijing for Advancing Women in Leadership; Innovation in Data Collection; The Role of the national strategies in the women economic empowerment in the MENA Region; and Women in Gaza Rising for Freedom and Dignity.This session coincides with the launch of the 'Mother of the Nation' exhibition, which aims to shed light on the vision of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), and her significant efforts and pioneering achievements in the field of supporting and empowering women in various fields.
As the first subsidiary bodies created by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1946, the Commission on the Status of Women is a functional commission of ECOSOC and the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality, the rights and the empowerment of women.

ANKARA (WAM) Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), extended thanks and appreciation to the Republic of Türkiye, its government and people, for hosting the 'Mother of the Nation' exhibition in Ankara. Her Highness Sheikha Fatima praised the initiative as a reflection of the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the UAE and Türkiye, nurtured under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye. 19 June 2025 17:26 ABU DHABI (WAM)His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent, has reaffirmed the UAE's commitment, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to supporting and advocating for refugee issues worldwide, drawing global attention to their humanitarian conditions and strengthening their ability to overcome exceptional noted the pivotal role the UAE plays in alleviating the plight of refugees and addressing the root causes of displacement through comprehensive development and humanitarian efforts, made possible by the guidance of the President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of a statement marking World Refugee Day, observed annually on 20th June, Sheikh Hamdan said the UAE recognised early on the impact of instability, lack of development and the spread of conflict on the increasing prevalence of displacement. This initiative, he said, has transformed programmes targeting women in developing other key UAE contributions in this area, he highlighted the distance learning initiative and the UAE Digital School, which has been implemented in several host countries to ensure access to education for refugee children. The initiative offers flexible, smart educational tools that help overcome the obstacles created by displacement, in line with the fourth Sustainable Development Goal: ensuring inclusive, equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all, including refugees.H.H. Sheikh Hamdan explained that the UAE's efforts stem from a long-standing system of values and goals aimed at helping refugees overcome hardship, regain their productivity, and support host communities by sharing the burden of increasing refugee flows. This includes launching development projects to meet refugees' healthcare, education, livelihood and basic service also underscored the key role of the Emirates Red Crescent in advocating for and protecting refugees, noting that the organisation has established and managed many refugee camps in several countries. Despite the expanding scope of displacement, he said, the Red Crescent has consistently delivered high-quality services and demonstrated solidarity with affected populations.H.H. Sheikh Hamdan also commended the efforts of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in assisting millions of refugees and displaced persons in dozens of countries, ensuring their basic needs are met. He expressed appreciation for the partnership between the UNHCR and the Emirates Red Crescent, which helps prevent the worsening of humanitarian conditions in many regions. He added that the Red Crescent places high importance on strengthening cooperation with international humanitarian organisations and continually seeks to expand collaboration and share expertise.
