Football: Nadeshiko Japan beaten 3-1 by Spain in friendly
Japan took the lead but went down 3-1 away to a dominant Spain in a women's football international friendly on Friday, their third straight defeat in a month.
Nadeshiko Japan won the SheBelieves Cup with three straight victories in February as their Danish manager Nils Nielsen, the first foreigner to lead the side, got his tenure off to a strong start. But a draw with Colombia at home in April and two losses to Brazil since late May have stalled momentum.
After absorbing early pressure at Butarque Stadium in Leganes, Mina Tanaka gave seventh-ranked Japan the lead on the half-hour mark against World No. 2 Spain when she struck on the turn with her left foot following a pass from the right by Maika Hamano.
Spain drew level in the 44th minute as Claudia Pina swept her shot through the legs of Japan captain Saki Kumagai, and the home side went ahead through Vicky Lopez in the 66th minute after Momoko Tanikawa lost possession just outside her own box.
Mariona Caldentey rattled the bar with a free-kick before Athenea del Castillo found the top left corner of the net to complete the scoring in the 88th minute.

In women's action, French Open champion Coco Gauff beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals. The second-seeded American's game showed minor rust after a bye in the previous round. "I could have maybe made some more first serves in that second set, but overall, I had a lot of aces and unreturnables," said Gauff, the 2023 Cincinnati champion who went on to win the US Open title that year. Gauff, who was broken once in each set herself, finally secured a spot in the last eight with a concluding break of the 61st-ranked Italian's serve as Bronzetti hit long after 79 minutes on court. Gauf next takes on seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who crushed 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2. Krejcikova had treatment on her left foot in the second set and her movement was clearly hampered. Paolini, the 2024 Roland Garros and Wimbledon finalist, won seven straight games on the way to a 4-0 second-set lead and rallied from 0-30 down in the final game to advance. "She's a great player and can do anything she wants with the ball," Paolini said. "But I don't think she was at 100% today. I'm glad I stayed in the match mentally to the last point." Japan's Naomi Osaka defeated 10th seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Canadian Open, where she will face Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson tennis Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Canadian Open on Tuesday with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2 triumph over 10th seed Elina Svitolina. Osaka, chasing her first WTA Tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open, needed only 68 minutes to dispatch the Ukraine star and book a Wednesday semifinal with Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson, who stunned reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4.
