Chelsea reach agreement with Brighton to sign Joao Pedro

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Joao Pedro.
The 23-year-old Brazilian was targeted by Chelsea and Newcastle United but he only wanted to join the west London side.
A deal in excess of £50million has been struck, while personal terms are in place on a contract until 2032.

Medical checks are being arranged and subject to successful completion, he will become part of Chelsea's squad contesting the Club World Cup in the U.S.
The move will see them add a versatile forward to an attacking unit that has already been bolstered in the summer window.
Liam Delap arrived from Ipswich Town and the striker will be joined at Stamford Bridge by Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.
Joao Pedro missed Brighton's final two matches of the season after a training ground altercation with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke, as first reported by The Athletic.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler later said the altercation was dealt with internally and he considered the matter 'closed'.
As well as Delap, Dario Essugo, Estevao, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez have also arrived at Chelsea following pre-existing agreements. Jadon Sancho has departed Stamford Bridge after a season-long loan deal.
Chelsea have signed multiple players from Brighton in recent seasons including Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez, while Levi Colwill also spent the 2022-23 season on loan at the south-coast club.
Joao Pedro has three caps for Brazil since making his international debut in November of last year.

(AP Photo/Kin Cheung) LONDON (AP) — Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka says she wouldn't want women's tennis to move to best-of-five-set matches at Grand Slam tournaments — like the men play — fearing higher injury risks. 'Probably physically I'm one of the strongest ones, so maybe it would benefit me. But I think I'm not ready to play five sets,' Sabalenka said following her two-set first-round victory at Wimbledon on Monday. Advertisement 'I think it's too much on the woman's body. I think we're not ready for this amount of tennis. I think it would increase the amount of injuries. So I think this is not something I would consider." There's no widespread movement for the change, but it's an occasional talking point — if women's tennis should move to best of five at the later stages of the major tournaments. Sabalenka was asked about the French Open final in which Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in a five-setter that lasted 5 1/2 hours. 'For someone watching, it's amazing to see five hours of great tennis,' Sabalenka said. 'But I'm not really jealous to stay there for five hours as a player. I don't know how many days they needed to recover after that crazy match.' Advertisement No. 2-ranked Coco Gauff expressed similar sentiments about best of five sets on Saturday. 'It would favor me just from a physicality standpoint. But I do think it would kind of be a big change for the tour. I think it would be fine just keeping it like how it is,' the American said. Sabalenka beat 194th-ranked Carson Branstine 6-1, 7-5 in 73 minutes on Monday. ___ AP tennis:

Wimbledon: 2-time defending champ Carlos Alcaraz needs 5 sets to beat Fabio Fognini in the 1st round

LONDON (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz needed to go through five sets against Fabio Fognini at Wimbledon before winning their first-round match Monday to start his bid for a third consecutive title at the All England Club. Alcaraz eventually asserted himself in the last set to pick up the 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory at Centre Court. The No. 2-seeded Alcaraz had a much tougher time than anyone likely expected before he managed to extend his current winning streak to a career-best 19 matches. Fognini is 38, has said he'll retire after this season, is ranked 138th and entered the day with an 0-6 record on tour in 2025. ___ AP tennis:

Botafogo sacks coach Paiva after Club World Cup elimination

(AP Photo/Jae Hong) RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Botafogo sacked coach Renato Paiva on Monday, 48 hours after they were eliminated in the Club World Cup by Brazilian rival Palmeiras. The Portuguese held the job for only four months but won Botafogo's first Copa Libertadores title. Advertisement Botafogo said Paiva was informed on Sunday night. Brazilian media say Botafogo chief John Textor made the decision because he wanted a more aggressive performance from the team in the 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras on Saturday in the round of 16. TV Globo reported Paiva told Botafogo staffers that Textor was trying to interfere in his team selections, which the U.S. businessman denies. Only 10 days ago, Botafogo beat Champions League titleholder Paris Saint-Germain 1-0, and Textor celebrated on the pitch with the 55-year-old Paiva. Earlier, Textor relinquished his role as president of seven-time French champion Lyon to American businesswoman Michele Kang. Textor resigned following the club's relegation over financial irregularities. Advertisement Textor has also resigned from Lyon's board of directors. He became Lyon president three years ago, taking over from longstanding incumbent Jean-Michel Aulas, who sold to Textor's Eagle Football Holdings after 35 years in charge. ___ AP soccer:
