It's finally Oscar time for Tom Cruise, the Motion Picture Academy of Arts & Sciences has decided.
Cruise, actor-producer-director-dancer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas will receive Academy Honorary Awards for their ample (and as-yet unrecognized) contributions to big-screen culture.
They are, according to a statement Tuesday from academy President Janet Yang, 'four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact.'
Cruise (who famously does his own stunts) has 'inspired us all,' according to Yang, with his 'incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community.'
Sometimes called Hollywood's last real movie star, Cruise has fueled box office revenue like few others, drawing crowds to the wildly successful 'Top Gun' and 'Mission Impossible' films, not to mention 'Rain Man,' 'War of the Worlds,' 'Risky Business' and 'Jerry Maguire.'
He has been nominated for four Oscars in the past — twice for best actor, once for supporting actor and once for best picture, for 'Top Gun: Maverick' — but hasn't taken one home.
Allen is being honored for her nearly five-decade career, during which she has acted, sung, danced, directed, produced and executive-produced. In that time she has choreographed the globally televised Academy Awards ceremony seven times and performed as well.
'Debbie Allen is a trailblazing choreographer and actor, whose work has captivated generations and crossed genres,' Yang said. While much of the six-time Emmy winner's work has been in TV, film credits tagged to her many job descriptions include 'Ragtime,' 'Fame,' 'Amistad,' 'Forget Paris' and more.
And without Thomas' work, Spike Lee wouldn't be who he is today. Thomas started his career as a production designer on the director's 1986 effort 'She's Gotta Have It,' then continued their collaboration on 'Do the Right Thing,' 'Jungle Fever,' 'School Daze,' 'Malcolm X' and 'Da 5 Bloods.' He also worked on 'Eddie Murphy: Raw,' Robert Townsend's 'The Five Heartbeats and 'King Richard,' which delivered a best actor Academy Award for Will Smith.
Other films on Thomas' resume? 'Hidden Figures,' which was nominated for three Oscars, and 'A Beautiful Mind,' which won four. 'Thomas has brought some of the most enduring films to life through a visionary eye and mastery of his craft,' Yang said.
Meanwhile, Parton will take home the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and its attendant Oscar statuette, an honor given 'to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.'
The singer and '9 to 5' star, whose beloved husband Carl Dean died this March, has long put her fame to good use. Yang said Parton 'exemplifies the spirit' of the Hersholt award 'through her unwavering dedication to charitable efforts.' The woman behind Dollywood has been nominated for original song Oscars twice.
The honors will be given out Nov. 16 at the academy's 16th Governors Awards in Hollywood.

Dolly Parton to receive honorary Oscar for humanitarian work

Dolly Parton is poised to be an Oscar winner — the '9 to 5' singer is being awarded an honorary statuette for her humanitarian work. The 79-year-old country music performer will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in November, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors announced Tuesday. 'Parton will be recognized for her decades-long humanitarian efforts,' Academy Award organizers said in a statement. The actor and songwriter — who garnered Oscar nominations in the best original song category in 1981 and 2006 but never won — is the founder of the Dollywood Foundation. She launched her literacy program, 'Imagination Library,' in 1995. In addition to Parton, honorary Oscars will also be presented at a ceremony in Hollywood to 'Top Gun' star Tom Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas. Henry Winkler took in Marlee Matlin after she left her tumultuous relationship with William Hurt

Marlee Matlin needed somewhere to go after she got out of rehab and ended her turbulent relationship with William Hurt. Happy Days star Henry Winkler, who first met Matlin when she was a teenager, opened his home up to her. Matlin ended up becoming a part of the Winkler family and considering their house her home away from Matlin ended up having plenty of happy day thanks to Henry Winkler. The Oscar-winning actress, who at 21 became the first deaf performer to win an Academy Award, tells her story in the new documentary Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore. And part of that story is the key role Winkler has played in her life as an inspiration and a friend. The two first met when Winkler was touring the country as a member of the Happy Days cast and Matlin was just a teenager with big dreams. They kept in touch, and Winkler was Matlin's soft place to land during a difficult time in her life. Matlin had a tumultuous two-year romantic relationship in the 1980s with her Children of a Lesser God costar William Hurt, recalling in her 2009 memoir that he was often abusive toward her. However, Hurt did encourage her to go to rehab for her alcohol and drug addiction, and it was there that she realized the unhealthy nature of their situation. "There were a lot of things I learned in rehab," Matlin says in the documentary, "that pointed to things not being right. The physical abuse and verbal abuse, the mental and emotional abuse was not right. I learned that there." Matlin says the experience made her and Hurt realize their relationship was never going to be the same after rehab. "I decided I had it," she says. "I walked out of that house and I never went back." Instead, she went to Winkler in search of help after he invited her to come to his home in California and talk. Winkler remembers that moment clearly. "Knock on the door. Marlee," he recalls in the doc. "'I have no place to stay. I just broke up with my boyfriend. Can I stay with you just for the weekend?'" Naturally, the actor said it was no problem. Then, "two years later, she finally moved out," he deadpans, before breaking out into a wide grin. "That family took me in as if I were one of their own," Matlin adds. "I''ll never forget that." Winkler also notes, "She was not completely whole at that time, so I told her, 'If you know what you want without ambivalence, if you're clear about what you want, everything else will fall into place.'" His words rang true, and Matlin found her footing in Los Angeles, as she booked the TV show Reasonable Doubts and met her husband, police officer Kevin Grandalski. The two married Aug. 29, 1993, in the backyard of Winkler's home. Home video footage of the ceremony is also included in the film. "There was no other thing to do," Winkler says in the doc. "There was no other place for her to get married except in our yard, in her home away from home." Winkler and Matlin remain close to this day. While doing press for the film at its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Matlin told PEOPLE that she considers Winkler her "fairy godfather." Cruise Will Receive an Honorary Oscar at Governors Awards

Despite his death-defying stunts as the spy Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise has yet to land an Oscar for any of the eight installments of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise. His portrayal of the sports agent Jerry Maguire in 1996 earned him a nod from the film academy for best actor, and as a producer he was up for best motion picture in 2023 with 'Top Gun: Maverick.' But his career has not included a golden Oscars statuette. Until now. In November, Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, alongside the production designer Wynn Thomas, and the choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday. Dolly Parton, the singer and actress, will be presented with the annual Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charitable works. The honorary awards, in their 16th year, are given out by the academy's board of governors to recognize 'extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement' in the film industry or 'outstanding contributions' to the state of filmmaking. They will be presented months before the main Oscars ceremony in March and will not be televised. This time the awards celebrate four 'individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,' the academy president, Janet Yang, said in a statement. Cruise, 62, was first nominated for an Academy Award in 1990 for his portrayal of Ron Kovic, a Vietnam War veteran, in the biographical film 'Born on the Fourth of July.' He has received three other nominations since then, for 'Jerry Maguire,' 'Magnolia,' and 'Top Gun: Maverick.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
