Here's how a company earns Top Workplaces honors

If you want to really know what's happening at work, ask the people on the front lines.
That's the foundation of the Top Workplaces award. For the 17th year, employee survey company Energage has partnered with the Indy Star to honor the best places to work in central Indiana.
This award can't be bought; it has to be earned, based on employee feedback. Winners are chosen through a scientific survey process. Positive employee feedback equals recognition. Workplaces that don't have strong feedback are excluded from the winners list.
Energage crunches the data based on a 25-question survey that takes just a few minutes to complete. The survey asks employees for their feedback on such factors as pay and benefits, direction, leadership, meaningfulness, and appreciation. Energage scores companies based on the responses.
Organizations do not pay any fees to survey employees or to earn a Top Workplaces designation. If they choose, organizations can purchase the survey data. There is no obligation for winners to purchase any product or service.
For the 2025 winners list, 3,047 organizations were asked to survey their employees, and 153 agreed to do so. Based on the survey feedback, 111 employers have earned recognition as Central Indiana Top Workplaces.
'Top Workplaces awards are a celebration of good news,' said Eric Rubino, CEO of Energage. 'They exemplify the significance of a people-first workplace experience, reminding us that employees are the heart of any thriving organization.'
The winners list is intended to reflect on the regional workforce. To qualify for Top Workplaces recognition, employers must have at least 50 workers in the region. Survey results are valid only if 35% or more employees respond; employers with fewer than 85 employees have a higher response threshold, requiring responses from at least 30 employees.
Employers earn Top Workplaces recognition if their aggregated employees feedback score exceeds national benchmarks. Employers are grouped into similar sizes to best compare similar employee experiences. Energage has established those benchmarks based on feedback from about 30 million employees over 19 years. They are ranked within those groups based on the strength of the survey feedback.
Why might a particular employer not be on the list? Perhaps it chose not to participate, or perhaps it did and employee feedback scores were not strong enough. Energage also runs tests on survey feedback and in some cases may disqualify an organization if, for example, a high number of employees said they felt pressured to answer positively.

Energage and Bucketlist Launch Top Workplaces for Frontline Workers Award

Nominations are now open for national recognition honoring employers that deliver exceptional experiences for frontline employees EXTON, Pa., June 05, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Energage, the HR technology company that powers the Top Workplaces employer recognition program, today announced a new partnership with Bucketlist, a leading employee rewards and recognition platform. Together, they will publish the inaugural Top Workplaces for Frontline Workers award, a first-of-its-kind national recognition honoring companies that prioritize the needs, contributions, and workplace experience of their frontline staff. "As the talent landscape shifts, frontline employees continue to shoulder the weight of daily operations — often in physically demanding, customer-facing roles," said Eric Rubino, CEO of Energage. "This award gives voice to these essential employees and recognizes companies that are getting it right — investing in their people, leading with purpose, and building cultures where every role is respected and supported." The new award celebrates organizations building people-first workplace cultures where frontline employees — often the face of a company's brand — feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Winners will be determined by feedback from employees captured through the confidential, research-backed Energage Workplace Survey, which has been refined by more than 19 years of culture research. To be eligible, participating organizations must have a minimum of 50 employees. At least 35 of them — or 10% of the total workforce — must be frontline workers. Nominations are open now through August 8, 2025, and winners will be announced in early 2026. There is no cost to nominate, participate, survey employees, or win. Eligible industries with significant frontline representation are encouraged to participate, including Construction, Distribution, Entertainment, Freight & Logistics, Healthcare, Hospitality, Life Sciences, Manufacturing, Recreation & Travel, and Retail. Frontline workers are the unsung heroes of our economy, showing up every day to power the industries we rely on most," said Patricio Vascones, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Bucketlist. "Yet, their contributions are often overlooked on a national stage. This award changes that. We're proud to partner with Energage and Top Workplaces to spotlight organizations that don't just talk about culture — they build it, especially where it matters most." Death of 'Grassroots' Live, Electronic Music Venues Gets U.K. Parliament Review: SXSW London

The death of 'grassroots' live and electronic music venues in Britain will be the focus of a new review to be conducted by a committee of the U.K. parliament's House of Commons, unveiled at SXSW London on Wednesday. The review was announced by Culture, Media and Sport Committee chair Caroline Dinenage at the inaugural London edition of the popular festival. The goals are supporting 'a thriving grassroots music scene and building a sustainable talent pipeline that ensures the U.K. music industry remains one of the U.K.'s global success stories.' 'Encompassing all aspects of live and electronic music, the review will be chaired by Lord Brennan of Canton, … with the aim of bringing music lovers together to discuss ideas and policies to protect the industry and ensure it works in the best interests of fans,' the committee said in a statement. The previous report 'amplified concerns by venue operators, touring artists and independent promoters regarding the financial precarity of the grassroots music sector, with venues shutting at the rate of two a week.' The review will consider 'the music fan experience, from the provision of live and electronic music through to considerations of safety, examine the sustainability of venues, and explore the barriers to touring faced by emerging artists,' the committee highlighted. 'It will also look at the effectiveness of existing policies and how different levels of government support live music.' Dinenage, a member of parliament for the Conservative Party, argued that the governing Labour Party needed to do more to support grassroots music. 'Despite some headway being made on an industry-led levy to support grassroots music, venues are still shutting their doors at an alarming rate, while the government continues to stick its fingers in its ears when it comes to calls for a fan-led review,' she said. 'It's time to put the power in the hands of those who truly understand and love live and electronic music – the fans, artists, DJs and festival goers, as well as those who work behind the scenes.' The previous committee report found that of the 148 grassroots music venues lost in 2023, approximately 22 percent closed due to operational issues, such as the revocation of premises licences or unachievable license renewal terms. Around 12 percent shut down due to eviction or redevelopment. 'Small music venues and nightclubs are already under immense pressure, and the current planning system is only adding to their burden,' said Dinenage. 'Requiring local authorities to properly consider existing venues when approving new developments would be a game-changer. It would help protect the live music ecosystem and give these vital cultural spaces a real chance to survive and thrive.'
