Gwyneth Paltrow Ended Her Engagement to Brad Pitt for This Surprising Reason—Plus, Where Her Famous Square-Cut Diamond Ring Is Now
After first meeting in 1994, Brad Pitt proposed to Gwyneth Paltrow in 1996.
However, in 1997, the actress called off their engagement.
In a new biography, some of the reasons behind the split are revealed, including that Paltrow had doubts about whether Pitt was right for her.
It's likely that Paltrow either kept the square-cut engagement ring or returned it to Pitt. After meeting on the set of Seven, it didn't take long for Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow to start a romantic relationship. In April 1995, the two made one of their first red-carpet appearances as a couple, stepping out in London for the premiere of Legends of the Fall. Over the course of the next few years, the two continued to support each other's career trajectories. "I'm in a very happy relationship," the actress told the Los Angeles Times in a 1996 interview. "We're the best of friends. We go out on a date together. We go to the movies. I make dinner. We go out to dinner. We have friends over." Later that same year, while in Argentina, the actor proposed to the Goop founder, and she accepted.
While the couple never released public details about the engagement ring, on March 13, 1997, the actress debuted the diamond—and her and Pitt's matching haircuts—at the premiere for the The Devil's Own. The sparkler featured a square-cut stone on a thin yellow gold band. However, ultimately, the engagement didn't last long. On June 16, 1997, the duo announced their split.

Why Did Gwyneth Paltrow Call Off Her Engagement to Brad Pitt?
Even though the two stars were reluctant to comment on the reason behind their break-up at the time, in the years since, more truths about their relationship have been revealed. In Amy Odell's forthcoming book about Paltrow, the biographer dives into some of the never-before-heard stories about the actress's relationship with Pitt, including that she expressed doubts about whether or not the producer was right for her on the set of Emma. "After Emma came out, Gwyneth went over to [her friend, makeup artist Kevyn] Aucoin's place and cried about Pitt multiple times," Odell wrote in an excerpt released by People. "He wanted to be with her but seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received. [Aucoin's] advice to Gwyneth was frank, 'You really need to end this.'" Yet, it would take another year for the actress to do just that.
In a 2023 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Paltrow revealed that she called off her engagement because she didn't feel ready to tie the knot. "I had a lot of development to do, looking back in hindsight," she said. "In a lot of ways, I didn't really fully start to come into myself until I was 40 years old. And I had such a pleasing issue. I didn't really even understand how to listen to my instincts and act from that place for what was right for me. I was always trying to adjudicate what was right for everyone else."
Where Is Gwyneth Paltrow's Square-Cut Engagement Ring From Brad Pitt?
While the actress has never publicly revealed where her engagement ring from Pitt is today, it's likely that she either kept the sparkler or else returned it to the actor. In the 2023 with Alex Cooper, Paltrow said that she and Pitt remained close friends. "He's a great guy," she said, according to People. "He's wonderful, I really like him a lot." The two even published an interview between them on the Goop founder's site in 2022. Due to their amicable relationship, it's plausible that the businesswoman may have opted to keep the sparkler for sentimental value.
However, it's also possible that the actress returned the ring to Pitt when she called off their engagement. In both California and New York, such a ring is considered a conditional gift. As a result, the law stipulates that the person who purchased the sparkler has the right to claim it. While it's unlikely that the two actors legally battled over the piece, the Shakespeare in Love star may have opted to follow the rule and returned the diamond to Pitt.

Netflix boss says show used generative AI effects for first time
Netflix says it has used visual effects created by generative artificial intelligence (AI) on screen for the first time in one of its original TV shows. The streaming giant's co-CEO Ted Sarandos said AI, which produces videos and images based on prompts, was used to create a scene of a building collapsing in the Argentine science fiction show, The Eternauts. He praised the technology as an "incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper." The use of generative AI is controversial in the entertainment industry and has sparked fears that it will replace the work of humans. The comments came after the company unveiled revenue of $11.08bn (£8.25bn) for the three months to the end of June,16% higher than the same time last year. Netflix said the better-than-expected performance was boosted by the success of the third and final series of South Korean thriller Squid Game, which has so far attracted 122 million views. Asked about Netflix's use of AI, Mr Sarandos said the technology has allowed productions with smaller budgets to use advanced visual effects. The generative AI used in The Eternauts helped its production team to complete a sequence 10 times faster than if they had used traditional special effects tools, he said. "The cost of it would just wouldn't have been feasible for a show in that budget." "That sequence actually is the very first [generative] AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film. So the creators were thrilled with the result," said Mr Sarandos. AI was among the key concerns raised during a Hollywood strike in 2023. During the three-month walkout, the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists union called for tighter regulation of the use of AI.

This Off-strip Las Vegas Hotel Is Getting a $200-million Transformation—Take an Exclusive Look Inside
Green Valley Ranch, located 12 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, is undergoing a $200 million transformation. The resort plans to renovate all 493 of its guest rooms and suites in phases, with completion scheduled for 2026. Highlights include analog alarm clocks, curated artwork, and layered textures in the guest rooms, and oversized soaking tubs, hand-finished woodwork, and built-in entertainment systems in the suites. On the eve of its 25th birthday, Green Valley Ranch is undergoing a sweeping $200 million transformation that will touch nearly every corner of the resort. Located in Henderson, about 12 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, the beloved hotel opened in 2001 as a refined alternative to the Strip's spectacle. Earlier this summer, the resort embarked on a renovation of all 493 guest rooms and suites, a process that will continue in phases through 2026. The redesign, led by Station Casinos' in-house team in partnership with Avenue Interior Design, brings a modern perspective to the resort's Mediterranean-inspired roots. Deluxe rooms now feel more residential, with layered textures, sculptural walnut lighting, and custom stone finishes. Caramel tweeds and shagreen leathers lend the spaces a tailored, lived-in feel, while thoughtful touches, such as analog alarm clocks and curated artwork by Zoe Bois, add character. In the suites, the upgrades are even more pronounced. The West Tower's 37 reimagined suites introduce elevated materials, including ivory onyx, burnished brass, and hand-finished woodwork. Spa-inspired bathrooms feature oversized soaking tubs and rainfall showers framed in marble. High-tech comforts include smart TVs, automated lighting, and entertainment systems integrated into custom millwork. Several suites offer balconies or patios overlooking the pool, and some include butler service and upgraded amenities such as Dyson hair dryers and Agavia toiletries. Crowning the suite collection is the two-bedroom 2,790-square-foot Strip Suite, which is more like a private residence than a hotel penthouse, complete with a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, a striking red tiger onyx bar, a butler's kitchen, and curated design pieces from Daniel Fine Art and The Future Perfect. The resort has also transformed its public spaces over the last few years. Drop Bar, which reopened in late 2021, is now a sparkling focal point on the casino floor with a dramatic chandelier and sweeping views of the resort's grounds. In spring 2023, the eight-acre backyard pool area was refreshed with new cabanas, upgraded daybeds, and soft-toned finishes that highlight the garden-like layout. That same year, Polaris Bar debuted along the casino promenade, offering a circular gathering space with sports screens, bartop gaming, and globally-inspired cocktails. Green Valley Ranch also doubled down on high-stakes gaming by expanding its High Limit Table Games room in late 2023 and refreshing its High Limit Slots room in early 2024. The culinary lineup has seen its own glow-up with the addition of Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill in March of this year. Helmed by chefs and brothers Eric and Bruce Bromberg, the restaurant features a wood-accented dining room, a 13-seat sushi counter, and a menu that spans pristine sashimi, hot Japanese specialties, and its signature fried chicken with wasabi honey. The space joins a lineup of local favorites like Hank's Fine Steaks & Martinis, Bottiglia Cucina & Enoteca, and Pizza Rock by Tony Gemignani. Once the current phase wraps, the renovation will continue with updates to the East Tower, South Lobby, and the resort's meeting and convention spaces. Guest rooms in the renovated West Tower will be available beginning October 1.

The critics were wrong. This underrated Ayo Edebiri thriller is now on HBO Max (July 18-20)
Critics don't always get it right. David Fincher's Fight Club, one of the defining movies of the last 30 years, received boos at the Venice Film Festival. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho divided the audience upon its release due to its controversial subject matter. While Opus does not reach the highs of those aforementioned movies, it did not deserve to flop at the theaters. The Ayo Edebiri-led thriller should find a new audience on HBO Max. While you're there, check out these three underrated movies. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Opus (2025) God bless John Malkovich. The 71-year-old fully embraced being an egotistical and self-indulgent pop star in Opus. That's a credit to writer-director Mark Anthony Green, who cast Malkovich in this transformational role. Wanting to stand out in a crowded media field, journalist Ariel Ecton (Edebiri) receives her big break when she's invited to the compound of Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), a '90s superstar coming out of retirement with a new album. Ariel is startled to learn that Moretti's compound is essentially a cult — a place where the singer's followers can worship him and his music. No one ever said cults were a good thing, and Ariel eventually discovers Moretti's nefarious plans for the future. Malkovich has the time of his life as the eccentric musician. Embrace the weirdness, and you'll be rewarded with a twisty thriller. Stream Opus on HBO Max. Pearl (2022) Mia Goth broke out as a scream queen in X, but Pearl transformed her into a star. Pearl Douglas (Goth), one of the villains in X, receives her origin story in Ti West's prequel. Growing up on a farm, Pearl dreams of becoming a chorus girl or a movie star. However, Pearl can't abandon her paralyzed father and strict mother. Pearl's rage for her parents fuels her sociopathic tendencies, which include killing animals. When a projectionist (Superman's David Corenswet) gives her attention, Pearl sees him as her ticket to stardom. Yet Pearl can't escape her true nature, as her propensity for violence transfers from animals to humans. Stream Pearl on HBO Max. Batman Returns (1992) Superman this. Superman that. How about some love for the Caped Crusader? Admittedly, it's an exciting time for Superman, as James Gunn's feature film about Clark Kent appears to be a successful start to a new shared universe. But let's not forget that Batman has the best solo movies for DC characters. While Batman and The Dark Knight receive most of the adulation from fans, don't sleep on Michael Keaton's second outing as Bruce Wayne, Batman Returns. In this sequel, Batman faces three new foes: Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito), aka the Penguin; Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a corrupt businessman; and Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), aka Catwoman. Keaton remains as stoic as ever, but it's Pfeiffer who steals the show. Stream Batman Returns on HBO Max.
