Class 9 Student Dies By Suicide In Assam, Note Alleges Sex Abuse By Teacher
A girl student in Assam's Tinsukia district, who attempted suicide in June due to alleged sex assault repeatedly by her teacher, died by suicide on July 6, the police said.
The police found a four-page note detailing what she had gone through. In the note, which NDTV has seen, she alleged three other teachers tried to shield the accused.
The case has sparked anger and outrage across Assam.
The 14-year-old student who was in Class 9 was allegedly molested by her teacher, Vhiku Chetry, for the first time in May, according to a first information report (FIR) filed by her family following the first attempt to die by suicide in June.
On May 26, Chetry allegedly mixed sleeping tablets in a soft drink and offered it to the student in the school kitchen after class. Other students had left by then, sources said.
The girl tried to die by suicide on June 3. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors managed to stabilise her health and save her.
The girl's family then filed the FIR with Dholla police station under the stringent POCSO Act, which deals with sex crimes against children. The teacher, Chetry, was arrested on June 11.
However, the girl died by suicide in a second attempt on July 6. Her brother filed another FIR on Sunday against the teacher for abetment to suicide.
Many social organisations have demanded exemplary punishment against the teacher.

Conviction can be based on child's testimony if credible, says court while sentencing man for sexual assault
New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2018, emphasising that a conviction can be based solely on the testimony of the child victim if it is found to be reliable and credible. Additional sessions judge Rohit Gulia noted that courts should not hesitate to convict an accused in sexual assault cases solely on the victim's statement, provided it inspires confidence. In an order dated July 19, made available recently, the court said, it was established that the convict showed obscene videos to the victim on his mobile phone and touched her with sexual intent, besides threatening her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone. It then sentenced the convict to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) under Section 10 of the POCSO Act. The court also awarded a sentence of one year imprisonment each under Section 12 of the POCSO Act and under IPC Section 506 (criminal intimidation). It said that the sentences would run concurrently. The court also provided compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the victim, observing that the child suffered physical and emotional trauma because of the offences. Home guard in Azamgarh found to be history-sheeter with rape, theft charges
Azamgarh, Aug 12 (PTI) A home guard posted at Mubarakpur Police Station here for over two decades has been found facing eight serious criminal cases, including charges under the NDPS Act, POCSO Act, rape and theft, police said on Tuesday. Nirankar Ram, a native of Damodarpur village, was appointed to the Home Guards department in 2001 and allegedly embarked on a crime spree soon after. He was found to have been booked in six cases at the very police station where he had been serving for the past 24 years, an officer said. 'Information about the home guard's criminal background had already been received. A report was sent to the Home Guard Commandant, who has suspended him. He has not been on duty for the past month, and action is being taken," ASP City Madhuwan Kumar Singh told PTI. Police records show that Nirankar Ram's first case was lodged in 2003 under the NDPS Act at the Bhatni GRP Police Station. Between 2003 and 2017, he was booked in eight cases, including theft and sexual assault. He had once been suspended and faced dismissal, but was reinstated in October 2021 following a high court order, the officer said. 9 Pakistani Soldiers Killed In Balochistan Militant Attack
