'I'm changing my name because my parents named me after a drug'
A 28-year-old woman has taken to the internet to ask for help on choosing a new name for herself - after disclosing that her parents named her after a herbal drug.
A woman is considering a name change due to her parents' decision to name her after a drug. Naming a child is a significant task for many parents, as they must select a moniker that will suit their offspring both in childhood and adulthood.
While some parents opt for popular, traditional names, others choose unique ones, which can sometimes lead to issues for the child. Most people retain the names given to them at birth, but there are instances where individuals decide to change their names in adulthood, a decision that can be even more challenging.
A 28-year-old woman turned to Reddit to seek advice on choosing a new name, revealing that her parents named her after a recreational narcotic. She told the forum that her birth name was Sativa, "as in Cannabis sativa."
In her post, she elaborated: "Although I think my name is pretty, I have faced a few problems.
"As a child, friends' parents not wanting their kid to hang out with me because of my name, odd stares and jokes when i'm introduced ('Do you have any twin named Indica?' is one I get a lot), having trouble applying to jobs, and just not being taken seriously. So I have decided to change it."
Cannabis sativa plants are tall and slender with finger-like leaves, known for producing a 'mind high' or an energising, anxiety-reducing effect.
In contrast, Cannabis indica plants are short and stout with bushy greenery and chunky leaves, reports the Mirror. According to Healthline, Indica is "sought after for its intensely relaxing effects".
Sativa has decided to change her name, particularly as she plans to have children soon and the thought of her child introducing her as 'my mum, Sativa' makes her feel "uncomfortable."
But she also realised that choosing a new name for herself is not as straightforward as she initially believed.
The Reddit user elaborated: "I would like something classic but unique since having a different name is one of the things I do enjoy about my name. I need help choosing a name for myself. Help me, Reddit."
Her plea has attracted 1,500 upvotes and nearly 800 comments with name suggestions. And several users offered ideas that were close to her birth name.
The top comment suggests: "Sylvia? Kinda similar to Sativa, but it's an established name that I don't hear very often." Another person proposed: "Or Sylvie. Prettier in my opinion."

A third chimed in: "One of my partner's friends named his baby Sylvia, and I loved the name immediately. It's a good choice if OP doesn't want to change the sound of their name too much."
Another commenter recommended the name Saskia, with someone responding: "I was going to suggest this.
"It has similar sounds, so will most likely be easier to get used to than something that sounds completely different.
"Really pretty and uncommon, but not so unusual that people would have a hard time with it. Truly a beautiful option."

Urgent fridge warning to UK households over 'concerning' trend
The organisation of your fridge might not be a priority, but experts say it should be Many of us have our own opinions about where to store certain food items, for example, ketchup in or out of the fridge? Should eggs be in there? However, a recent study has shown that there are some rules that Brits aren't following leaving millions at real risk of food poisoning. The study found some concerning trends when it comes to where householders keep their fridge items. And an expert has warned that proper fridge organisation is 'essential' if people want to avoid becoming sick. The survey, by white goods and tech retailer Currys, was carried out asking 2,000 people about their fridge habits. And it showed that more than one in five (23 per cent) didn't know that the ideal fridge temperature should be 0-5C, which is the official recommendation of the Food Standards Agency. What's more, 42 per cent admit to not checking their fridge temperature regularly, meaning that potentially millions in the UK are putting themselves at risk of food poisoning. And when it came to storage specifics, 61 per cent said they didn't know that it's not recommended that dairy products, such as milk, are stored in the fridge door as it's typically being the warmest part of the appliance, due to the temperature fluctuating when the door is opened and closed. Additionally, 22 per cent of those questioned also didn't know that raw meat should be kept on the lowest shelf in the fridge, and a third admit to eating meat from the fridge without being 100 percent sure it was safe to consume. In this case men are nearly twice as likely to do so as women, with 41 per cent of men eating meat they didn't know was safe, compared to just 26 per cent of women. The study also asked UK residents to share their preferred location to store certain consumable items, some of which cause debates. For example, despite the label on tomato ketchups (such as Heinz) stating that once opened it should be 'refrigerated and consumed within eight weeks', 40 per cent of Brits store theirs in a cupboard instead. The food people are most confused about when it comes to proper storage turned out to be eggs. Looking at Google searches in the UK, there are over 31,000 searches for 'should I keep eggs in the fridge', up 26 per cent compared to last survey revealed that 43 per cent of Brits store their eggs outside of the fridge, with 27 per cent storing them straight on the countertop and 16 per cent choosing to keep them in the cupboard. According to the Food Standards Agency, people should 'Store eggs in a cool, dry place, ideally in the fridge and keep them apart from other foods.' As the temperature of the kitchen varied depending on weather, and if cooking appliances were being used, storing eggs on the counter could be putting their quality at risk. Working with Currys, Dr. Helen Onyeaka, an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, specialising in microbiology and sustainable food systems, shared her tips for safer food storage. Dr Onyeaka said: "To ensure food safety and minimise contamination risks, proper organisation and storage are essential." Here's her tips to reorganise your fridge safely: Top Shelf This is where you should store ready-to-eat foods such as leftovers, cooked meals, and packaged dairy products. This reduces the risk of contamination from raw foods below. Middle Shelf Suitable for dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt, as these require consistent cold temperatures. Bottom Shelf This is the coldest area, ideal for raw meat, poultry, and fish. Always store these items in sealed, leak-proof containers to prevent raw juices from contaminating other foods. Crisper drawers Designed for fruits and vegetables. Keep fruits and vegetables in separate drawers to prevent ethylene gas emitted by fruits from speeding up vegetable spoilage. Fridge door The warmest area, suitable for condiments, sauces, and beverages.

'Michael Mosley's death changed my life - I'm free from pain explosions'
The shock death of Michael Mosley, whose legacy lives on through his transformative healthy eating advice, was the push Lorraine Kerr needed to finally change her bad habits The tragic news of Michael Mosley 's death this time last year forced Lorraine Kerr to put change into action. She had always been a fan of the TV doctor and heard about his popular diet plan two years ago, but was stuck in a rut of emotional eating. It was in June 2024 when the 55-year-old returned home from Greek-island hopping that sparked the start of a new journey of health and fitness. She too had been holidaying in Symi, the very same picturesque island where Dr Mosley had been staying and subsequently died. The health guru, known for popularising the 5:2 diet, was found dead in a rocky area of Agia Marina on June 5. He had said goodbye to his wife, Clare Bailey, at the beach before going alone on a two-mile walk, having left his phone at the hotel. Michael, 67, had taken a wrong turn and became lost. Police said he died of natural causes, and an inquest last December concluded his death was "most likely attributable either to heat stroke (accidental) or non-identified pathological cause". The shock news made Lorraine, who weighed 14-and-a-half stone and is now more than six stone lighter, want to honour the medic's lasting legacy. "I first heard about The Fast 800 by listening to Dr Michael Mosley 's podcast about two years ago," she told the Mirror. "I'd already put on a lot of weight and thought the plan would be a sustainable option for me, but at that point I wasn't ready to do anything. I've always been an emotional eater, and after losing both my mother and sister in a very short space of time, I found myself turning to sugary foods. It took a toll on my health and my GP said it had put me on the path to pre-diabetes." She added: "When the news broke about what had happened to him, it kind of galvanised me to stop dithering…and in a way I felt like I wanted to honour him and all the work he and his team had done." She began with The Very Fast 800 – the programme's most rapid weight loss approach, which involves up to 12 weeks of eating two to three Mediterranean-style meals each day, totalling approximately 800 - 900 calories per day. In those first 12 weeks, she dropped to 12 stone 5lbs. Today, she is just 6lbs away from her goal weight of 8 stone 4lbs. Much of that weight loss, says Lorraine, is the result of a complete change in her eating habits. A typical day of eating might have been an extra-large Danish pastry from a bakery at the end of her road, lots of coffee with cream and artificial sweeteners, a steak pie and a packet of crisps for lunch, plus several chocolate bar snacks or biscuits throughout the day and more coffee. Dinner was likely to be pizza or spaghetti bolognese – albeit homemade, as both Lorraine and her husband Nick enjoy cooking. However the new diet inspired Lorraine to embrace a lot more vegetables, particularly greens that she doesn't particularly enjoy. 'I found the first 12 weeks difficult at first," she said. "I was very hungry but absolutely determined and I knew there was an end to the very low calorie restriction. The galvanisation really helped me to get through it. 'I always loved the kale recipes, in particular the Harissa Greens and Halloumi, which featured largely during my 12 weeks and since. I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I absolutely love it." Typical meals for Lorraine now that she has moved onto The Fast 800's maintenance approach - The Way of Life - include baked oats, pears and walnuts for breakfast, plenty of Greek yogurt, different kinds of salad for lunch, and healthier evening meals that might include oily fish, meatballs or even vegetarian selections. If she's on the go, she'll make use of pre-prepared meals such as The Fast 800 Dark Chocolate and Raspberry Protein Bars. Perhaps the biggest motivation for embracing her new lifestyle permanently is the huge improvement in IBS symptoms. 'The amazing thing was that within three days of starting the programme, my irritable bowel syndrome, which I'd suffered from for a couple of years, had vanished, and it's never returned.' Lorraine now believes her problems were as a result of consuming too many artificial sweeteners. 'This isn't scientific, but as a test I reintroduced some artificial sweeteners and within two to three days the symptoms came back and were quite severe. "When I stopped eating the sweeteners, the symptoms vanished again. I tried the same thing one more time to check and the symptoms returned straightaway and disappeared again as soon as I stopped…I've not had one day of IBS since I stopped eating artificial sweeteners after reintroducing them briefly." Lorraine, who takes the Pre + Probiotic supplement, has also seen other health improvements. Her fibromyalgia - long-term condition that involves widespread body pain - symptoms have improved along with back problems caused by Coccydynia – permanent inflammation of the coccyx. 'I used to get explosions of pain; sometimes so horrific I needed morphine. I haven't had one since around the six month mark, so my weight loss has really helped with that too.' Alongside her healthier eating, Lorraine also began regular exercise. She started slowly, five days a week with resistance training, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training, which comprises fast-paced exercise in short bursts) and Pilates. 'My fitness was very poor and I was struggling to walk anywhere because of my weight. "I'm only 5ft and 1.5 inches with a very slight frame, so that was a lot of weight to be carrying around on a small person. It was really hard going just to do the basic level, but I lost quite a bit of weight in those first two weeks, which gave me the psychological push and my sleep improved too.' She now swims in the sea regularly and finds the 15 minute walk to and from the beach – including a steep hill on the way home, easy. 'I'm walking really quickly now. My body feels clearer and brighter. There are so many benefits,' she says. Lorraine is now adamant that the dramatic changes both to her body shape and health are not something she wants to reverse. 'It's had a massive impact on my wellbeing and health, so I'm really looking to make this a way of life because the changes have been so good. That's the whole point, isn't it?!' "I will be sailing past Symi at the end of next week so will give a silent nod to Dr Mosley and his lovely family - I can say I did it, I feel great, thank you."
