Ronaldo in Hong Kong: new Al-Nassr boss says coaching CR7 was incentive to join

New Al-Nassr coach Jorge Jesus has said on the eve of the Saudi Super Cup in Hong Kong that the opportunity to manage Cristiano Ronaldo was a 'big incentive' to accept a new challenge at 71.

Al-Nassr are the 16th club of Jesus' cosmopolitan career, after he was tasked with masterminding overdue Saudi success for superstar Ronaldo.
The forward, who has plundered 93 goals in 105 Al-Nassr appearances, is in Hong Kong chasing only his second piece of silverware in 2½ years with the Riyadh side, after winning the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup following his transfer from Manchester United.
Al-Nassr are poised to meet champions Al-Ittihad in the first Super Cup semi-final at Hong Kong Stadium on Tuesday.
At a chaotic series of press conferences to preview the competition on Monday, Jesus said: 'Cristiano being on board was a big incentive for me to accept this challenge; this is a new life with the Al-Nassr team, and we are mobilising everything for this season.

Photo: Reuters Crowds at the Hong Kong Stadium were treated to a goal-fest as Al-Ahli crushed Al-Qadsiah in a one-sided Saudi Super Cup semi-final. With Al-Hilal's withdrawal handing Al-Ahli their spot, the green-and-white side dominated possession from the opening whistle, but it was Al-Qadsiah who drew first blood. In the eighth minute, a clever short corner caught Al-Ahli napping as Al-Qadsiah's center-back Gastón Álvarez rose high and scored with a header. But their lead was erased five minutes later when a pinpoint long throw found Franck Kessié, who powered a header into the net, levelling it at 1-1. The game tilted in the 28th minute when VAR spotted a handball in Al-Qadsiah's box and awarded Al-Ahli a penalty, which was calmly converted by Ivan Toney to give his team the lead. A moment of brilliance from Riyad Mahrez followed, as the Algerian star danced past several defenders before delivering a delicate chip to assist Enzo Millot's first Al-Ahli goal to stretch the lead to 3-1. Things went from bad to worse for Al-Qadsiah in the 42nd minute, as Christopher Bonsu Baah's reckless stamp on Al-Ahli defender Roger Ibanez got him a straight red card after VAR review, leaving his side down to ten men. Mahrez whipped in another perfect corner kick in first-half stoppage time for Kessié to head his second goal. Nacho Fernández's own goal off a horribly wrong clearance in the 61st minute added insult to injury, wrapping up a dominant 5-1 victory for Al-Ahli. They will next face Al-Nassr in the final at 8pm on Saturday. Al-Nassr - led by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix - will be without Sadio Mané in the final after he received a straight red card in their 2-1 semi-final win over Al-Ittihad on Tuesday.

Bars near Hong Kong Stadium hoping for another big score from Ronaldo match

Restaurants and bars near Hong Kong Stadium have enjoyed a spike in business of at least 20 per cent thanks to the city hosting the Saudi Super Cup and are gearing up for Saturday when football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is set to play again. More than 30,000 spectators watched Ronaldo and his team Al-Nassr beat Al-Ittihad 2-1 at the Causeway Bay stadium on Tuesday. Al-Nassr will play either Al-Ahli or Al-Qadisiyah on Saturday in the final. Yuga, a cha chaan teng, or Hong Kong-style cafe, on Caroline Hill Road and a short nine-minute walk from the stadium, said that it had recorded an around 20 to 30 per cent rise in business because of the match, with a constant stream of customers at both tea and dinner time. 'There have been more people in the restaurant since 4pm and the customer flow only slowed after 8.30pm,' Nic Lai, vice-manager of the restaurant, said on Wednesday. 'We will have one to two extra staff and will prepare more food for Saturday.' Football fans enter Hong Kong Stadium for the Saudi Super Cup match on Tuesday. Saudi Super Cup: Al-Ahli sweep aside Al-Qadsiah to book final date with Ronaldo in Hong Kong

Al-Ahli stand in the way of Cristiano Ronaldo and Saudi Super Cup glory after they beat Al-Qadsiah 5-1 in a heavily VAR-influenced semi-final at Hong Kong Stadium on Wednesday. On a night that felt very much after the Lord Mayor's show, 24 hours on from Cristiano Ronaldo mania sweeping the same venue, Al-Ahli were stung into action after Gaston Alvarez headed their opponents into an eighth-minute lead. Franck Kessie capitalised on some lax defending to equalise four minutes later, before Ivan Toney, with the 43rd successful penalty of his career, turned the score on its head after 28 minutes. Enzo Millot quickly added a third for the reigning Asian champions, as they moved one step closer to the club's second Super Cup title. Al-Qadsiah's task grew sterner still with the 42nd-minute dismissal of forward Christopher Baah, and Kessie stretched Al-Ahli's advantage in first-half stoppage time. Nacho Fernandez's 61st-minute own goal heaped more misery on Al-Qadsiah. Al-Qadsiah fans in the South Stand watch their side's game against Al-Ahli. Photo: Elson Li The absence of Ronaldo sliced at least 25,000 off the 30,000 gate from Al-Nassr's stormy victory over Al-Ittihad on Tuesday, despite organisers claiming a laughable attendance of 20,156.
