TSX futures inch up as commodity prices rise
June 2 (Reuters) - Futures tied to Canada's main stock index edged higher on Monday despite lingering tariff-led uncertainty, helped by gains in commodity shares.
The S&P/TSX index futures were up 0.2% at 6:13 am ET (1013 GMT).
Gold prices rose more than 1% and oil prices rebounded more than $1, opens new tab a barrel. Copper prices also gained.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he planned to increase tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50% from 25% starting Wednesday.
The levies add to the existing tariffs on steel and aluminum that Trump imposed when he came to power in January, deepening the global trade war.
Meanwhile, data showed on Friday that Canada's economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.2% in the first quarter, beating estimates of a 1.7% gain.
The spotlight this week will be on the Bank of Canada's interest rate decision due on Wednesday and the Canadian employment report, expected Friday.
Comments from U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will be on tap later in the day.
Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said on Monday interest rate cuts remain possible for later this year, even with the Trump administration's tariffs likely to push up price pressures temporarily.
Canada's main stock index fell on Friday as energy and metal mining shares lost ground. The index still posted its biggest monthly rise since November, helped by easing global trade tensions.

The Trump-Musk relationship may yet get worse. Hours after the feud kicked off, Trump threatened to punish Musk, posting on Truth Social: 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.' Shares of Tesla, Musk's electronic vehicle company, fell nearly 12% shortly after midday, with the decline timed to when Trump's remarks began. For weeks, Musk has complained about the proposed Republican budget bill and used the non-partisan congressional budget office estimating the bill would add $2.4tn to the deficit over the next decade as an opening to slam the legislation as a 'disgusting abomination'. On Thursday, Trump appeared to finally have had enough of Musk's complaints. Speaking in the Oval Office as German chancellor Friedrich Merz looked on in bemusement, Trump mocked Musk's recent black eye and questioned why he didn't cover it up. 'You saw a man who was very happy when he stood behind the Oval desk. Even with a black eye. I said, do you want a little makeup? He said, 'No, I don't think so,' which is interesting,' Trump said. 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' Trump then ratcheted up his barbs at Musk, accusing him of turning against the bill solely out of self-interest, as the bill did not benefit Tesla, Musk's electronic vehicle company, and Trump pulled the nomination of Musk's preferred candidate to lead Nasa. 'I'm very disappointed with Elon,' Trump said. 'He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem & he only developed the problem when he found out we're going to cut EV mandate.' An unrestrained Musk hit back within minutes of the clip being posted on X, seemingly learning of Trump's comments in real time. As Washington watched in disbelief at the back and forth playing out online, Musk effectively accused Trump of lying. 'False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!' Musk posted. The public feud comes after a remarkable partnership that lasted longer than many Democrats on Capitol Hill and in Trump's orbit predicted. Musk spent hundreds of millions of dollars on Trump's re-election campaign through his specially created America Pac which shouldered a large portion of Trump's door-knocking campaign, although that the actual impact of that ground game effort is unclear.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk's bromance has come to a spectacular and petty end as the Tesla boss dropped what he has called a huge "bomb" about the President. Taking to his X (Twitter) account, the richest man in the world said it was "Time to drop the really big bomb" before claiming that Donald Trump "is in the Epstein files". Trump's name was released as previously sealed court documents were made public last year, in which he was named as an associate of the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. There is no suggestion he knew of any crimes or participated in any criminal behaviour. The South African billionaire, who bought his way into Washington by pumping millions into Trump's campaign, has taken to X to add more fuel to the pair raging between the former pals. Once Trump's right hand man, Musk left his special government position as the Department of Government Efficiency - specially set up by the President for the Tesla CEO who seemed to be longing for a top job in Washington - a week ago. The fall out between Musk and Trump has gotten out of control in just a few days, spiralling into a series of petty online fights. Donald Trump made a Second World War joke about Germany re-arming while meeting the country's chancellor, Friedrich Merz, in the Oval Office on Thursday, 5 June, amid negotiations over tariffs. Mr Merz went into the meeting hoping to keep Western support for Ukraine, make progress on trade, and bolster German military spending. 'I know that you're spending more money on defence now,' the US president began. 'They said never let Germany rearm."
