Homeowner shoots intruder; intruder hospitalized with life-threatening injuries
A burglary suspect was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after intruding into a garage in Aurora, Colorado, and being shot by the homeowner on Monday.
According to 9 News, the intruder was shot by a homeowner after he was caught breaking into the homeowner's detached garage at roughly 4:49 a.m. on Monday in the 1200 block of Moline Street in Aurora, Colorado. Aurora Police Department officials noted that the burglary suspect was transported to the hospital following the shooting and remained in the hospital with life-threatening injuries as of Monday night.
Following an interview with the unidentified homeowner on Monday morning, the Aurora Police Department released the homeowner and indicated that law enforcement officials do not expect any charges to be filed against the homeowner, according to News 9.
However, in a statement obtained by Fox 31, the Aurora Police Department said, 'Detectives continue to investigate and will present their findings to the district attorney's office upon completion. This is standard practice.'

According to News 9, the homeowner reported another break-in on Saturday and claimed that $400 worth of goods were stolen in the intrusion. The homeowner told police officials that following Saturday's incident, he purchased and installed security cameras in his garage, which notified him regarding Monday's break-in attempt.
News 9 reported that the homeowner told police officials that after noticing the intrusion on the security cameras, he confronted the burglary suspect in the garage, leading to an altercation with the intruder. The homeowner told police officials that he shot the intruder during the altercation.
Fox 31 reported that while Colorado residents are legally permitted to use deadly force against intruders inside their homes under the Colorado Make My Day law, Christopher Decker, a criminal defense attorney, told the outlet that the Colorado Make My Day law does not apply to Monday's shooting since the homeowner did not shoot the burglary suspect inside the home.
'You can't just shoot,' Decker told Fox 31. 'You have to act reasonably, and in order to use deadly force, you have to be in fear of serious, imminent bodily injury.' However, the criminal defense attorney noted that self-defense laws are applicable to the case.

Five people were taken to the hospital and an Aurora man is now in jail after police say he stole a pickup truck, drove it through Denver and Glendale, and got into a head-on collision with another car while allegedly under the influence Saturday night. Freyta has previously been arrested on charges of motor vehicle theft, ID theft, fraud, and forgery, and he's allegedly failed to maintain his status on the sex offender registry for an Adams County conviction involving a minor, according to Aurora police.

Three girls missing in Wenatchee
The Wenatchee Police Department is asking for help locating three missing girls, last seen with their father during a planned visitation. Their father, Travis Decker has been homeless and living in his vehicle, various hotels and motels, or at campgrounds in the area. The visitation was part of Decker's parenting plan, but he has yet to bring the children back at a time agreed upon in the plan. There is no active Amber Alert for the missing girls, but there is an Endangered Missing Person Alert (EMPA) with Washington State Patrol. Brighton man loses wife of 68 years, 4 pets, home in fire
DENVER (KDVR) — On Thursday night, FOX31 learned new information about a fatal fire in Brighton that burned a home on Mother's Day, killing an 88-year-old grandmother and four animals. The cause of this fatal fire may be surprising: an electric recliner chair. Family members are truly devastated and not ready to speak on-camera, but they were spoken with on the phone, and they hope to prevent another tragedy by sharing their story. It's a device common to many households, and investigators said it's the cause of the fire that sparked on May 11. The fire started around 12:30 p.m. on 132nd Avenue, and when firefighters arrived on the scene, the home was fully engulfed in smoke, with one person trapped inside. Crews rushed in, rescued her and began CPR, but it was unsuccessful. 88-year-old Kim Okada died from smoke inhalation. The family said their three dogs and cat all died of smoke inhalation as well. Kim's husband, Paul, was outside the home when the fire started, but was unable to save her. The couple were high school sweethearts who met when they were 16 and 17 years old, and were married for 68 years. 'My mom was a kind woman who brought smiles to those around her. She was a loving wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother who is sorely missed. She was a light in our lives,' said daughter Teiko Richy. Brighton fire investigators concluded the home had no smoke detectors and the fire started underneath an electric recliner. They determined a cord was pinched due to wear over time. The Brighton Fire Chief of Prevention, Elizabeth Bednracik, is warning everyone with this piece of furniture to always check the integrity of the appliance cord because it can lead to fires. The Brighton Fire Department said there are several steps to take to prevent fires: Always have working smoke alarms Check electrical cords frequently Have an escape plan Use power strips over extension cords Evans, Boebert tout 'Big, Beautiful, Bill' amid boos from Coloradans 'It's a difficult time right now. We're doing everything we can to help support the family and community. This is a big loss for us, and we're going to be there for them during this time,' said Bednracik. 'They're very grateful. They've reached out to me to express thanks to the crews who came out, as you can imagine, it's very difficult for our responding crews who knew there was a party trapped inside. They were able to get her out and do CPR. It's a tragedy to the entire community, including our fire department.' The family has set up a GoFundMe to help Paul after the incident.
