Hosepipe ban expands to Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Southern Water has announced a hosepipe ban.
It will come into force for customers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight from 9am on Monday.
In a statement on its website, the firm said: 'The Environment Agency has declared the Solent and South Downs in ' prolonged dry weather '. We need to work together to protect precious chalk streams and keep taps flowing.'
Southern Water said customers with medical and mobility needs, including Blue Badge holders, are exempt from the ban.
The statement added: 'Anything you can do to reduce or avoid hosepipe use would be greatly appreciated.'
A hosepipe ban has already been implemented in Yorkshire in the face of reservoir storage at only 53.8 per cent, while South East Water has imposed a ban in Kent and Sussex which comes into force on Friday.
Embattled utility Thames Water has announced a ban which will begin next Tuesday for customers in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, most of Wiltshire and some parts of Berkshire.

Firefighters are urging people to take garden waste to a recycling centre this summer after a Grade II listed building was nearly destroyed by flying embers from a thatched home at Bowden Hill near Lacock, Wiltshire, caught fire on Monday after the owners of the property lost control of the bonfire, which then set light to a and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) deployed 55 firefighters and 13 engines at the peak of the blaze, and managed to save the building's ground said the blaze "highlights how easily bonfires can get out of control, especially during a prolonged spell of dry weather". It added: "Please avoid having bonfires to burn your garden waste and consider taking it to your local recycling centre instead." The service has also issued guidance to help avoid a repeat incident, including keeping any bonfire well away from buildings, fences, trees and garden structures, having a garden hose to hand, and not lighting a bonfire on a windy day in case it flares up more than expected. Homeowner Beth Collins told the BBC that firefighters had gone "above and beyond" when tackling the blaze and had managed to save most of the family's said the bonfire had gotten out of control so quickly "you don't have much time to think about it"."You think where is all that smoke, where are all those flames from? I thought it was just a fire in the garden. Someone came hurtling down the road and said 'your thatch is on fire'," she said.

Homes in Kent have been left without water after a pipe burst twice within a few hours. South East Water said just after 07:00 BST on Saturday that some customers on Tonbridge Road in Barming, near Maidstone, were experiencing no water or low pressure due to a burst saying they had fixed the issue at 18:00, the water supplier said a "few hours later" another burst happened on the same main, leaving customers with water supply issues into Sunday. The problem has since been resolved, according to South East Water. About 30 properties in the immediate vicinity were effected, it said."We are sorry to our customers and drivers who have been affected by this incident," said South East Water's Distribution Manager Garth comes after South East Water put in place a hosepipe ban for households in Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex to ensure there was enough drinking water supply for everyone.

Two people who were left stranded by a "significant cliff collapse" at a beach in east Devon had to be rescued by lifeboat Independent Lifeboat Station says two people were stranded on the wrong side of the cliff fall at Budleigh Beach on Saturday afternoon. They were safely taken to Budleigh Beach and crews carried out further searches, the lifeboat station said."Please remember cliffs along this stretch of coastline are unstable," it warned. It added: "Keep a safe distance from the base and the edge, and follow all local safety warnings."Sidmouth Lifeboat Station said its crews had supported Beer and Exmouth Coastguard teams, which were already on the scene. "Thank you to all volunteers and agencies involved for their swift response and teamwork," it resident Paul Westfield said a large section of the beach had since been cordoned-off and recalled there was a cliff fall at the same part of the beach in 2023.
