Stirling striker says opening day brace could've been better as Binos start well

Daily Record4 days ago
The summer arrival had two goals inside the opening 20 minutes to seal the contest at Edinburgh City - but rued another missed chances to make a real statement of intent.
It was a strong start in Stirling colours for new marksman Russell McLean as his brace helped Stirling to a comfortable opening day win at Edinburgh City.

But the towering forward's high expectations were on show at full-time as he was left kicking himself about the chances that were left begging in a first half.

A pair of predatory finishes inside the opening 20 minutes — including showing real desire to nip in ahead of ex-Stirling keeper Mark Weir for the second — capped an impressive showing for the summer arrival.

He was left ruing later opportunities which came off the woodwork and saved by Weir in the half — but believes the exciting Binos forward line will have plenty of opportunities to repeat their goalscoring trick throughout the season.
After netting his double in the 2-1 win, McLean told the Observer: 'It actually could have gone better for me, I hit the post and missed a good chance so I'm pretty annoyed with myself not to get a hat-trick which would have just killed the game off and not had that last few minutes of panic there.
'If that game had finished seven or eight goals, then I don't think there could have been too many complaints.
'The pitch didn't help in terms of our play with it being so sticky, it kind of nullifies what some of the boys can do but you can see the opportunities that will be created for the strikers and it's up to us as a group to take them.'
There had been some uncertainty heading into the opening fixture after a pointless — and goalless — League Cup section, but McLean insisted that performances had been better than results showed and believes the Meadowbank showing will be more reflective of the group's potential.

They will aim to keep up their opening day momentum with their home curtain-raiser this weekend as Annan Athletic visit Forthbank in a clash of two sides who claimed three points in the first round of games.
McLean added: 'I think everybody that watched the League Cup would look at the results and say we've been hammered in those games, we played good teams and could have had results in a few of the games and we've been good in our performances.
'You were playing against full-time teams against whom you shouldn't get anything really.
'We've only been together a few months as a group but I think the squad the gaffer has built is a good one because most of us know each other and the strengths we have, we know we will all dig in for each other and you can see the quality we have with the chances we created today.'
Saturday's opponents Annan were involved in a much more nervous opening day match, with three goals scored in the stages of the game in a crazy 3-2 win over Elgin City, with Aidan Smith netting the clincher with just a minute left on the clock.

Clyde 0 Forfar 0: Bully Wee boss says side must pose more threat up front, as key man sidelined

Darren Young watched his side fail to penetrate the Forfar backline in Saturday's stalemate Clyde boss Darren Young voiced his frustration after drawing 0-0 at home to Forfar, but admitted his side need to pose more of a threat up front. ‌ Young was happy to get Clyde's first point on the board in League Two, leaving them seventh in the table, but there were precious few chances at the Hamilton Community Stadium. ‌ Andy Murdoch had a shot cleared off the line from James Hilton's corner in 29 minutes, and Hilton blazed over in 74 minutes. ‌ Clyde's best chance came in the last minute, as Kyle Connell's shot was well saved by Marc McCallum. Young said: 'It's two points dropped, but we take the positives, the clean sheet and the point on the board, so we're off and running. 'In the first half we totally controlled the game, we had most of the possession without having too many clear-cut opportunities. 'The chances we did get to the wide areas or set pieces were poor, poor deliveries, poor final ball. 'The guys know themselves that we were lacking that wee bit of quality in the final third, and we know it's there, it's just getting it out there on the park on a Saturday. 'We've shown it in the League Cup section against teams in the Championship, Premiership and League One, so there's no reason for us now to be playing in the league and it's not happening. ‌ 'The positives are that we are creating chances, but we should be doing better, and putting ourselves in on one v one situations. I know our guys are better than that, and have better quality than that, anad it's frustrating.' The Bully Wee welcome Celtic B in the KDM Evolution trophy tonight and they host Spartans in the league on Saturday. ‌ Meanwhile, Cambuslang ace Liam Scullion has been ruled out of action at Clyde this week after undergoing hip surgery. The 23-year-old had been scheduled to have an operation in 2026 and play on for the Bully Wee this season, however a cancellation slot became available for the winger to have surgery earlier this month and he will now be out for the foreseeable future. Clyde told fans in a statement that 'the exact length of his recovery will be determined in consultation with his surgeon and the Clyde medical team.' ‌ Scullion had started the season strongly with two goals in the first five games of the 2025/26 campaign. Bully Wee boss Darren Young is disappointed to lose such a key player so early into the season, but knows it was in the player's best interest to have the work done now. Young said: 'We all want to wish Liam the very best in his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch when he's ready. ‌ 'It's disappointing to lose him, especially as he's started the season in such good form, but this was the best decision for him personally.' The club statement continued: 'Everyone at the club echoes Darren's sentiments and sends Liam our best wishes for a smooth recovery. 'We look forward to seeing him back in action as soon as possible.' The news comes after goalkeeper Brian Kinnear returned to action in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Forfar, following a rib injury against Peterhead last month.

The double-edged Celtic sword Rangers must improve upon

In short, McCoist feels his former club's recruitment has been woeful, meanwhile, across at Parkhead, they've more often than not nailed their transfer business. That's why the ex-Scotland striker insists Russell Martin and the new ownership deserve time to implement the correct model required to match Celtic in order to give them the best possible chance of competing for the league. "They've got to give him that time," he said on talkSPORT. "Of that there's no doubt. He's got to get his new players in. "The first thing you've got to say is recruitment. When I say recently, I don't mean under Russell Martin's tenure because it's far too early to judge. "But recruitment's not been good enough. Recruitment's been shocking, effectively. What's highlighted that is the fact that recruitment across the city has been very, very good. "Recruitment at Celtic, particularly under Big Ange, you've got a couple of the Japanese lads in. They've been excellent. Terrific. "So, with a combination of Celtic's recruitment being very good and Rangers' being very poor. You're right up against it. Read more: "You must give Russell Martin time. The same way you've just got new owners coming into the club. So, that's going to take a little bit of time as well. "When they bought Leeds United, they didn't come in and start scattering cash about. They organised things and it takes a little bit of time. I don't mind that at all. "However, like a lot of Rangers fans, you can't really accept the level of performances against Motherwell and Dundee."

Cristiano Ronaldo gives clear verdict on Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal transfer

Viktor Gyokeres has followed Cristiano Ronaldo by leaving Sporting CP for the Premier League, and the Portugal star has had his say on Arsenal's new starting striker Former Sporting CP star Cristiano Ronaldo is confident of ex-Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres' quality. The Swedish striker, who scored more than 50 goals for the Portuguese side last term, has been hailed by Ronaldo as a "special" footballer. ‌ Gyokeres played under Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim in Portugal, and there had been suggestions he would follow Ronaldo's path by leaving the Lisbon club for a move to Old Trafford. Instead, he has chosen Arsenal and will line up against United this weekend. ‌ Ronaldo was up against Portuguese opposition in pre-season, scoring a hat-trick as Al-Nassr beat Rio Ave 4-0. After the game, he was asked about his former club's hopes of defending their title, and suggested the loss of Gyokeres will be keenly felt. ‌ "I hope it's a competitive league. I always hope for the best and that Sporting can be champions again," Ronaldo said, per Goal. "Gyokeres? We only miss those who are there, that's what they say. I believe Sporting will be competitive. "Gyokeres was a special player, but the team will have to adapt. I believe [Luis] Suarez, who arrived from Almeria, is an excellent forward. [Conrad] Harder is also a good player, young, and needs time. I saw the Super Cup; Sporting performed well against Benfica, but they didn't win because they couldn't—that's football." Gyokeres made his first Arsenal appearance during the club's pre-season tour, in a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. He also drew a blank in a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal, but opened his Gunners account as they beat Athletic Club over the weekend. Arsenal won that game 3-0, ensuring they go into their league opener against United on a high. After the game, manager Mikel Arteta was asked about Gyokeres and what he can bring to the table this term. "That's his nature," Arteta said when asked about Gyokeres' desire to score. "I think everything that he does, his movement, the way he times his runs, the way he predicts the next move and where the space can be and where the ball is going to land, that's the instinct that he has, that's why he's scored so many goals in the last few seasons so that's not a coincidence, it's his ability and he's constantly looking for it. " I think his goals, his threat, I think he pins both centre backs, he's a player that when you're living with a space, one against one, he's going to destroy you," Arteta added when asked about the striker's qualities. "So he's going to create a lot of space as well for us and yeah, the moment that in any situation there is a player there that can score a goal."
