Egypt welcomes Canada, Malta pledge to recognize Palestinian statehood - Foreign Affairs
Egypt welcomed recent announcements from the Canadian and Maltese governments to recognize the state of Palestine. According to a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cairo said the "growing number of countries moving toward recognition is a historic step that supports the long-standing calls from Egypt and other Arab nations for a Palestinian state." The Canadian and Maltese announcements come days after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron also pledged to recognise the Palestinian state formally. Such steps are crucial for restoring the "legitimate and inalienable rights" of the Palestinian people, the ministry added. The announcement by the four Western countries that they intend to recognise Palestinian statehood comes amid global outrage over the deaths of tens of Palestinians in Gaza from starvation due to a five-month-old total blockade on the strip. The recent announcements step up pressure on Israel to end its war in Gaza and its settlement expansion in the West Bank. Egypt also reiterated its call for all countries that have not yet recognised Palestine to do so "quickly." Cairo urged nations to "stand on the right side of history" and contribute to the implementation of a two-state solution, establishing an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced their nations' intention to recognise the Palestinian state during a UN gathering in September. To date, 147 of the 193 UN member states—roughly three-quarters—have recognised the Palestinian state. Since the outbreak of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, several countries such as Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia, and other non-European nations, have officially recognised Palestinian statehood, with other countries signalling they may follow suit. There have even been calls for Palestine to be granted full membership to the UN, a move that would grant it the right to vote and fully participate. Since 2012, Palestine has been granted non-member observer status at the UN In May 2024, the UN General Assembly voted to expand Palestine's rights within the body, allowing greater participation in committee work, though without granting voting rights. In its genocidal war in Gaza since October 2023, Israel has killed 60,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 150,000, mostly women and children. Sweden urges EU to suspend trade deal with Israel over Gaza war - War on Gaza
Sweden on Thursday called on the European Union to suspend the trade component of its association agreement with Israel, citing Israel's conduct in Gaza and its obstruction of humanitarian aid. 'The situation in Gaza is absolutely appalling, and Israel is failing to fulfil its most basic obligations and agreements on emergency aid,' Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a post on X. 'Sweden therefore demands that the EU freeze the trade section of the association agreement as soon as possible,' he added, urging Israel to allow 'unhindered humanitarian aid into Gaza.' Kristersson's remarks follow a similar statement by the Netherlands earlier this week. Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said the Netherlands would push to suspend the trade element of the EU-Israel Association Agreement if Israel fails to meet its humanitarian obligations. The EU-Israel Association Agreement governs trade and political relations between the two sides. The EU is Israel's largest trading partner, accounting for nearly a third of its global trade, according to EU data. Israel imposed a full blockade on Gaza on 2 March, later permitting limited aid airdrops and a small number of trucks through land crossings. According to Gaza's health ministry, Israel's war on Gaza—launched in October 2023—has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians and pushed the territory's population of over two million into famine. UN agencies and humanitarian organisations warn that current aid deliveries remain gravely insufficient. They have called on Israel to lift the blockade and allow unrestricted humanitarian access to a population deliberately starved into famine. At the end of June, the EU's diplomatic service presented a report to member states that found strong 'indications' Israel may have breached its human rights obligations under the agreement. Despite the findings, EU member states have yet to take formal action. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

FM stresses need to maintain pressure on Israel to halt its aggression on Gaza
CAIRO, July 29 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty asserted the urgent need to intensify international pressure on Israel to halt its brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip and its use of starvation tactics against civilians, actions that constitute a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law. These remarks came during Abdelatty's meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on the sidelines of the high-level international conference on the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution, held at the UN headquarters in New York. Abdelatty praised the recent positive momentum in Egyptian-British relations, noting that this progress will soon be formalized through the upgrading of bilateral ties to the level of a strategic partnership. He asserted Egypt's commitment to capitalizing on this momentum to deepen cooperation in various fields, particularly in economic, trade and investment sectors, in a way that serves the mutual interests of both countries. During the meeting, the Egyptian foreign minister also briefed his British counterpart on the latest developments concerning ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. He outlined Egypt's ongoing preparations to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction, in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority and the United Nations. Abdelatty stressed the importance of expanding international recognition of the State of Palestine as part of a genuine two-state solution. He underscored that such a move is crucial for advancing peace, justice and long-term stability in the Middle East. (MENA)
