A game changer for the wee county: Louth GAA Stadium gets green light

Sinn Féin spokesperson for sport Louth/East Meath TD Joanna Byrne has expressed her delight at the news that funding has been secured for a new GAA stadium, saying she was proud to have played a role in the project's progression.
'This good news been a long time coming. In my first term as a Louth County Councillor almost ten years ago I attended briefings on this project,' she said. 'I also voted to transfer land from Louth County Council to the GAA so this project could go ahead, at that time,' she Byrne. 'I am beyond happy that a new state of the art stadium will be build for the many Louth GAA fans to go to and enjoy matches.'
The announcement comes on the heels of Louth's thrilling victory in the Leinster semi-final, Deputy Byrne added that 'it is a really great week for Louth GAA and the supporters.'
Funding for the stadium has been secured through a combination of sources, including an agreed levy that will be contributed by local clubs. 'Everyone involved with Louth GAA can say they've contributed to this new stadium,' added Deputy Byrne.
Looking ahead, the Sinn Féin TD is optimistic about Louth's future on the pitch. 'On May 11th Louth play Meath for the Delaney Cup in Croke Park. I am hoping that the Wee County can win the first Leinster Title since 1957. The future looks bright for Louth GAA.'
Meanwhile, Local Fianna Fáil Senator Alison Comyn described the development as 'a game changer for Gaelic Games in Louth' and confirmed she would be working closely with Minister for Sport Charlie McConalogue to secure essential funding under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund.
"This is a fantastic opportunity to build on the rising success of the Louth football team and to give our players, supporters and young people a stadium they can call home. For too long, Louth has been without a proper county ground. Now we have a real opportunity to deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose stadium in Dundalk, a venue that will not only elevate games in the county but become a true hub for our community,' Senator Comyn said.
Comyn also stressed the broader value of the project. "As Louth continues to grow in population and prominence, we need infrastructure that reflects our ambition. A county ground isn't just about sport, it's about opportunity and belonging. This stadium will inspire future generations of players, bring families and fans together and give the county a focal point we can all be proud of.'

You look unreal" while a fourth said: "Aww congratulations you pair gorgeous mumma to be x" Becoming a dad will make for a dream start to 2026 for the Louth footballer after what was a sensational 2025. Byrne and co. made history by winning the Leinster senior football championship, bringing to an end Dublin's 14-year stranglehold on the trophy. However, 2026 will be a new beginning for the Wee County after manager Ger Brennan left his post and took over at the Dubs. Advertisement Brennan was revealed as successor to Dessie Farrell, who stepped down after the All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Tyrone. Louth will be led into 2026 by new manager Gavin Devlin and assistant Peter Dooley. In a statement, the Wee County wished their departed boss for when the two sides meet. Inside Sharlene Mawdsley's 'delicious' yet atypical Tenerife holiday with GAA star boyfriend Mikey Breen It read: "From all at Louth GAA, we wish our former manager Ger Brennan – who guided us to our historic Leinster Championship win in 2025 – the very best of luck with his native county Dublin. "Wishing you every success… (except when you're playing us) Advertisement "We will be forever grateful for his work during his tenure as Louth boss "Beir bua agus beannacht Ger" The 37-year-old is a two-time All-Ireland winner with the Boys in Blue and was a teammate of Dessie Farrell himself. He was also a teammate of Paul Flynn, who backed his former colleague to thrive in the job - however surprised he was to see him get it. He told RTE Radio 1: "To me it just seemed a little bit ad hoc. Advertisement "It's funny when you're looking in, there wasn't even an awareness that there was a process ongoing. "It just kind of was happening in the shadows a little bit. Not sure exactly who the county board spoke to or what options were there." 'HELPFUL' However, Flynn backed Brennan to bring "humility" to the role. Flynn added: "I think it's going to be important for everybody in Dublin GAA because the team he's inheriting is not the team that Dessie inherited. "There's a lot of work that needs to be done at the squad level, and at the underage level where we're not competing, so there's not that conveyor belt that people thought was never ending in Dublin. Advertisement "It's actually more akin to the team that Pat Gilroy picked up when he had to take on the challenge to try and build character in the group to start with and then layer on the quality. "I'm sure Pat, a good club man of his will be there as a mentor whenever it's needed. "I'm not sure if he's even going to be involved of any nature but he'll certainly be there to guide Ger. "That'll be helpful because what Pat did when he came in was really about resetting things and trying to work from the bottom up."

Ger Brennan set to bring fellow Dublin legend onto new coaching ticket

It's a new era in Dublin football as they announced last week that Ger Brennan will replace Dessie Farrell as Head Coach on a three-year term. Brennan comes to his home county after winning the Leinster Championship with Louth earlier this year. It was the first time Louth had won a provincial title in 68 years. It's now time for Brennan to build his coaching ticket. Upon his arrival, Dublin GAA said that his backroom staff would be announced imminently and, speaking on Dubs TV, Brennan himself said that he had already had some positive conversations. Ger Brennan. Photo: Ray McManus/Sportsfile He also hinted at the possibility of some ex-teammates coming on board. He said that he would 'integrate a couple of guys I would have played with myself over the years. They're very much looking forward to getting involved,' This has led to speculation over who will be joining Brennan in the dug out next year and the Irish Independent are reporting that two former All-Ireland winners are set to join Brennan. The first name reported is Ballymun Kickhams and Dublin legend Dean Rock. The eight-time All-Ireland winner was a staple of the great Dublin sides up until his retirement from intercounty play in 2024. He continues to play for Ballymun, lining out in the Dublin Championship last weekend. He also played alongside Brennan from 2013 until 2015. Dean Rock and Denis Bastick. Pic: INPHO/Tommy Grealy The other name linked to a role in Brennan's coaching ticket is five-time All-Ireland winner Denis Bastick. Bastick was part of the Dublin set-up from 2009 to 2017, winning the All-Ireland alongside Ger Brennan in 2011 and with Rock from 2015 to 2017. All three men played together in the 2013 All-Ireland winning side as well. Excitement is beginning to build around this new Dublin era, and with some of the great minds being linked up, that sense of optimism seems fully merited.

Louth captain Sam Mulroy named first ‘Sporting Heroes' award winner

The newly launched awards aim to recognise sportspeople from across all levels and disciplines in the locality, and there could hardly have been a more fitting first recipient. Mulroy led the Wee County to a historic Leinster Senior Football Championship title earlier this year — Louth's first in 68 years. Away from the pitch, the star forward is also the driving force behind Sam Mulroy Fitness, one of the Chamber's valued members. The award was presented by David Allen of sponsors Flogas Ireland, who joined Chamber representatives to mark the occasion. 'What a year it was for Louth GAA and for Sam in particular,' said Chamber CEO Hubert Murphy. 'Winning Leinster was a huge achievement, and it will inspire continued growth in GAA in the area. With Louth GAA joining the Chamber in recent weeks and a new ground underway, the future is bright when it comes to all aspects of Gaelic Games locally.' The Sporting Heroes awards will run throughout the year, shining a spotlight on outstanding contributions to sport in the Drogheda and district area.
