PFTPM returns today

NBC Sports18-06-2025
The PFT Live hiatus began on Friday. I've promised to do #PFTPM during the break.
And, yes, I've heard from more than a few of you that we've yet to post a new episode.
I should have explained that the first order of business on Monday was to have my annual physical in Pittsburgh. On Tuesday, it was back to Pittsburgh for a non-serious medical issue that has been properly diagnosed and soon will be resolved — hopefully.
So far, those are the only two things on the docket that will keep me from doing #PFTPM every weekday until PFT Live returns on July 28. Which means we'll get started today.
If you have any specific questions or topics you'd like to see addressed, drop a line at florio@profootballtalk.com. We'll tape late this morning (which in that respect makes it not #PFTPM) and post in the afternoon (which in that respect absolutely makes it #PFTPM).

Patrick Mahomes: "There's stuff we've got to get better at"

The last time the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl, they made it back to the AFC Championship. And then, the next year, they won the first of two more Super Bowls. Now, they've lost another Super Bowl. What's next for the team that has gone to five of the last six Super Bowls? 'There's stuff we've got to get better at,' Mahomes told Jarrett Bell of USA Today. 'Especially myself. There's plays on the football field that I didn't make last year, that I've made in previous years. At the end of the day, I'm going to do whatever it takes to win, whether that's passing for a lot of yards, not passing for a lot of yards. But I think if I play better, that's going to make it better for the team. So, I've got to be better at executing whenever the shots are there, making those throws. Because that's going to alleviate pressure on our defense and make them play more free and make the team play more free.' So what does the sting of a loss do to Mahomes's approach to the job? 'It just gives you a little extra in some of the workouts and those film sessions, to try to find the little things to get even better,' Mahomes said. 'You try to do that when you have success, but at the same time when you have success you can sometimes be complacent. Obviously, you don't want to lose the game, but it can give you a little bit more motivation to be even better.' There's another potential source of motivation. The Broncos and Chargers are on their heels. Some (including Chris Simms on Tuesday's PFT Live) have predicted the Chiefs will yield the AFC West title to the Denver Broncos. It could end up being a crossroads season for the Chiefs and Mahomes, in his ninth NFL campaign and the year he'll turn 30. His worst finish as a starter is losing in overtime of the AFC Championship. His best is three Super Bowl wins in seven seasons.

Big Shield lands in two weeks

It's only two weeks away. The next book is coming. It's the fifth since 2022. And this one is football fiction rooted in fact. The NFL has plenty of inside information. Plenty of gamblers would love to have it. Are they buying it? Officially, we don't know. Eventually, we may find out that it's happening. Big Shield is based on a fictional pro football league (not the NFL). It's set in an undefined, but not too distant, future. And it features a backup quarterback from the Las Vegas franchise who is selling inside information, before and during games, to the mob. It came up on today's PFT Live when the topic of inside information was mentioned because, one, I'm trying to get people to pre-order it and, two, the first chapter includes an actual play call that Simms shared with me a year or two ago when I was writing it. West Right Slot 72 Bingo U Split Can It With 58 Lexus Apple 96 Seattle. He explains what it all means in the attached video. And I also explain in the attached video that I forgot to thank him in the book's acknowledgments section for taking the time to help ensure the book's authenticity. So I thanked him on the show instead. And I'll thank him here. And I'll send him a signed copy of it. And he won't read it. You can read it for 99 cents, in ebook form. Or $14.99 for the print edition. Nothing is only 99 cents. Nothing. At 385-pages, it'll provide you more than a few hours of diversion and, hopefully, entertainment.

NFL (and in turn PFT Live) will continue to be televised by Sky Sports

After months of uncertainty, NFL fans in the UK and Ireland can relax. And celebrate. Per multiple reports, the NFL and Sky Sports have struck a deal to continue pro football programming on the British/Irish equivalent of ESPN. That includes PFT Live, since PFT Live includes NFL highlights. It's a multi-year deal. Which means it will be multiple years before a string of short-term Band-Aid extensions like those done by the NFL and Sky in the months preceding August. The development also means that the flow of emails — literally in the hundreds — from PFT Live viewers on Sky regarding the status of the NFL-Sky relationship will cease. After, of course, one last wave from folks who will be letting us know that the deal is done. We've been a staple of Sky Sports programming for more than five years. And we plan to make an offseason trip to the UK and Ireland for a series of meet-and-greets and/or drinky-and-smoky sessions with our friends from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. One reason I haven't visited is simple. I've got a feeling that, after spending some time in London and/or Dublin and/or Manchester and/or Hove and/or Edinburgh and/or Wolverhampton and/or Milton Keynes, I won't want to come home.
