Mumbai's first metro line completes 11 years; served 111 cr commuters since 2014

Hindustan Times08-06-2025
Mumbai, Mumbai's first metro corridor, the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line, has completed 11 years of operations, having transported more than 111 crore commuters since its launch in 2014.
In a release issued earlier this week, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited said that of the 12 stations on the 11.8-km corridor, Ghatkopar recorded the highest footfall with 30 crore commuters, followed by Andheri with 23 crore and Saki Naka with 11 crore.
The current weekday ridership stands at around 5 lakh, with a peak of 5.47 lakh commuters, it added.
The agency said that Metro Line 1, or Metro One, has made more than 12.6 lakh train trips, covering 1.45 crore km while maintaining 99.99 per cent punctuality and 99.96 per cent train availability.
The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, which commenced operations on June 8, 2014, is considered one of the major east-west links in the metropolis.
The corridor's integration with other lines — Line 2A at DN Nagar, Line 7 at Western Express Highway, and Line 3 at Marol Naka — has improved connectivity and reduced commute times, the release said.
The MMOPL has introduced short-loop services between Ghatkopar and Andheri, enhancing capacity on the busiest section of the route.
As per the release, the metro line has received more than 40 national and international awards, including the Urban Mobility India Award for Best Passenger Services and iNFHRA Awards for Transportation Innovation and Green Commuting.
Metro One's operations have helped offset more than 67,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to planting more than 3 million trees, and its sustainable features, such as regenerative braking, energy-efficient trains, and solar-powered infrastructure, contribute to its green credentials.
'As India's first metro project under a Public-Private Partnership , the VAG corridor has become a symbol of reliable, efficient, and eco-conscious urban mobility,' the MMOPL stated in the release.

Changing City: At Ghatkopar, suburban Mumbai's first cable-stayed bridge to be operational by 2027

Vehicle movement on the congested Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road (AGLR) in Mumbai is set to get smoother in two years, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) are constructing a cable-stayed bridge, linking Ghatkopar's eastern and western sides and intersecting over Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg in Ghatkopar. Earlier, Ghatkopar East and West were linked by a Railway Over Bridge (ROB) that was declared unfit in 2018, following a structural audit carried out by the civic authorities. Consequently, the authorities mooted a decision to demolish the 45-year-old structure and replace it with a new cable-stayed bridge. The cable-stayed bridge, measuring 216 metres long and 11 metres wide, will have six lanes to accommodate heavier traffic. This will be the first cable-stayed ROB to become operational in the Mumbai suburbs. Currently, the cable-stayed bridges that are operational in Mumbai include the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Reay Road Bridge. In the Metro One line, the stations on Western Express Highway (WEH) and Andheri are also linked by a cable-stayed railway bridge. The bridge will significantly bring down the travel time and decongest the LBS Marg — a junction that records a high vehicle density in the suburbs. To ensure the citizens are not facing hardships, the authorities are building the bridge into two phases. In the first phase, only one arm of the ROB is being demolished and constructed to ensure that vehicle movement continues in the second arm. In the following phase, the remaining arm will be demolished and reconstructed. The cost of the bridge has been pegged at Rs 350 crore and the BMC has set up a 2027 deadline for completing the project. At present, the work is ongoing in the first phase. 'The bridge is being built to ease connectivity in the suburbs. The design of the bridge has been planned to boost the appeal of the place, and it will have aesthetic lighting to complement the structure. Alongside the vehicular carriageway, the bridge will also have footpaths and service roads to cater to pedestrians and emergency vehicles,' an MRIDC spokesperson told The Indian Express.

MMRDA deposits Rs 560 crore with Bombay high court registry in arbitration dispute with Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) deposited Rs 560.2 crore with the registry of Bombay high court in an arbitration matter involving Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd, in accordance with a directive recently issued by Supreme Court. MMOPL, a joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure and MMRDA, is a special purpose vehicle set up to run the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro 1 corridor. In Aug 2023, a three-member arbitral tribunal awarded Rs 992 crore to MMOPL as compensation for cost escalations and contractual disagreements. With interest accrued till May 2025, the total award rose to Rs 1,169 crore. The court observed that MMOPL's arbitration win could not be rendered meaningless during the pendency of MMRDA's challenge to the award. It noted that MMRDA failed to make a prima facie case to justify a stay without deposit. HC also pointed out that MMRDA, as a 26% equity holder in MMOPL, was involved in key financial decisions and project execution. The audit committee of MMOPL, chaired by an MMRDA nominee, endorsed the financial statements on which the tribunal partly relied. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses In Bolon Container House | Search ads Search Now It concluded that the award — passed by a 2:1 majority — could not be dismissed as perverse or arbitrary. MMRDA filed a challenge under Section 34 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, calling the award illegal and based on flawed assumptions regarding project delays, rent recovery, and cost escalations. MMOPL, in turn, accused the authority of attempting to backtrack from previously approved decisions. After the HC ruling, MMRDA approached Supreme Court, which granted partial relief by allowing it to deposit only 50% of the award amount pending final adjudication. In a stock exchange filing, Reliance Infrastructure confirmed that MMRDA complied with the SC order and deposited Rs 560.2 crore with the HC registry. The final outcome of this arbitration matter is likely to set a precedent for public-private partnership infrastructure disputes in India. S

MMRDA deposits Rs 560.21 crore complying with SC order in Mumbai Metro 1 arbitration case

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has deposited Rs 560.21 crore with the Bombay High Court as 50 per cent of the arbitration award amount in the case of Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL). The deposit was made as per a Supreme Court order in a case concerning cost escalation and delays in the construction of the Mumbai Metro Line 1 project. Reliance Infrastructure, which owns 74 per cent of MMOPL, confirmed the development in a regulatory filing on Tuesday. The remaining 26 per cent is owned by MMRDA. 'This follows our previous disclosure dated June 10, 2025, with regard to the arbitration award in favour of MMOPL. The Hon'ble Supreme Court ordered MMRDA to pay 50 per cent of the award amount, and as required, MMRDA has paid ₹560.21 crore to the Registry of the BHC,' Reliance Infrastructure said in a statement. The Bombay High Court had on June 10 ordered MMRDA to pay the entire Rs 1,169 crore arbitration award with interest up to May 31, 2025, into court registry by July 15. MMRDA had moved a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court, which had altered the High Court's order and permitted part payment until further orders. The award of arbitration arises out of a dispute since long between MMOPL and MMRDA over the cost and schedule of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro Line 1 project. The project agreement, signed in 2007, provided for all aspects of implementation, including operation, engineering and design. The project was delayed by more than two years and MMOPL asserted the overall project cost increased from Rs 2,356 crore to Rs 4,321 crore. MMRDA contradicted this cost escalation. The issue went to arbitration and the tribunal ruled in MMOPL's favour. The recent payment of Rs 560.21 crore confirms partial compliance with the tribunal's award, while the ultimate outcome awaits further court verdicts. Bombay High Court and Supreme Court hearings are still in progress.
