Today in Politics: PM Modi in Canada for G7 Summit; govt panel to meet on Ahmedabad plane crash

In the second leg of his three-nation tour that began on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney. This would be the PM's sixth consecutive participation in the G7 Summit. Modi is attending the summit following a visit to Cyprus. He will visit Croatia on June 18 after the summit. 'At the Summit, the PM will exchange views with the leaders of G7 countries, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and quantum-related issues,' the Ministry of External Affairs said. The PM will also hold several bilaterals on the sidelines of the summit. The Group of Seven (G7) consists of seven of the world's advanced economies – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US, and the UK – and the European Union. Govt panel to meet on A-I crash A high-level multi-disciplinary panel, chaired by the home secretary, will hold a meeting on Monday to examine the Ahmedabad plane crash, and the committee is expected to submit its report in three months. Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, operating a flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed soon after the take-off on Thursday afternoon. Out of the 242 people on board the plane, only one person survived. 'Decoding the black box is going to give in-depth insight into what happened moments before the plane crash,' Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said. 'Any theory going around the plane crash will be analysed,' he added. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the crash. In Gujarat, meanwhile, a statewide day of mourning is being observed on Monday as a mark of respect for former state Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was killed in the crash. Rupani's mortal remains will be handed over to his family members on Monday morning. Telangana ACB summons KTR in Formula E case The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) served a notice to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K T Rama Rao, whose father K Chandrasekhar Rao is a former CM, to appear before it on Monday as part of its ongoing inquiry in the Formula E race case. Rama Rao, also known as KTR, has said he will appear before the ACB and fully cooperate with its officials. KTR had earlier called the action as 'political vendetta' against him and lashed out at Congress CM A Revanth Reddy. The ACB had registered a case against KTR over alleged payments, most of them in foreign currency without approvals, for conducting the Formula E race in Hyderabad in February 2023 during the previous BRS government. Though the race was supposed to be held in February 2024 as well, it was cancelled after the Congress government assumed office in December 2023. Parties' protests in Maharashtra, Karnataka In Maharashtra, the Congress is set to hold protests on Monday over its allegations of 'vote theft' in the 2024 Assembly elections, which saw the BJP-led Mahayuti return to power with a comfortable majority. The Congress lined up the protest programme following allegations raised by Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. In Karnataka, the BJP is holding statewide protests against the state Congress government over the June 4 stampede during the RCB's IPL victory celebrations in Bengaluru. The party is holding CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar 'directly responsible' for the deaths of 11 people. Protests will be held in all Assembly constituencies, said state BJP President B Y Vijayendra, adding that protests will continue until Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar resign. – With PTI inputs

June 16, 1985, Forty Years Ago: ‘Quit Nagaland'

THERE IS panic in Kohima in the wake of the 'Quit Nagaland' notice served by the Naga Students Federation on Assamese living in the state, following clashes between the police forces of the two states. There were 4,500 Assamese working in the Nagaland government. There are reports of people being asked to produce their inner line permits. The notice comes in the wake of the arrest of five NSF office-bearers who went to the Assam side. Iran attacks Iraq IRAN SAID ITS ground forces had launched a new major invasion in Iraq's southern Huwaiza marshlands and were now 'six kilometres from the key Baghdad highway'. The invaders had seized 100 square km and were now 'coming into the area' to purge it of Iraqi resistance. Hundreds of Iraqi soldiers were killed or wounded, and others taken prisoner. The invasion carrying the name of 'Jerusalem' was launched in retaliation for Iraqi air force and ground missile attacks on 15 cities that claimed 550 civilian lives. No shift in policy PRIME MINISTER RAJIV Gandhi has denied that there was any shift in India's economic policy. Answering questions at a meeting with the representatives of the US Chamber of Commerce, Gandhi said there were some misconceptions about the nature of the Indian economy and socialism. In India, where millions of people were below the subsistence level, 'you cannot profess that a capitalist system will solve all problems,' he said. Guerrillas killed EIGHTEEN TAMIL GUERRILLAS were killed and about 20 were injured when security forces raided a rebel camp in Sri Lanka's Mannar district. Security officials believe guerrillas from the camp were responsible for last month's massacre of about 150 Sinhalese civilians in and near the Buddhist holy city of Anuradhapura and other attacks.
