The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum gets December 2027 release date
The Lord of the Rings
:
The Hunt for Gollum
now has an official release date. The highly anticipated film in the franchise is slated to arrive in theatres on December 17, 2027.
Adding to the excitement,
Andy Serkis
, who brought Gollum to life in The Two Towers in 2002, will both direct and reprise his iconic role. The news was made official in by studio bosses who confirmed its release during the Christmas holiday season.
This strategic timing aligns with the successful premieres of all six previous films in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, each of which also debuted in December, collectively amassing a staggering $2.9 billion at the global box office.

While the prospect of a new
Middle-earth
adventure is thrilling for fans, the journey to its release has seen a slight adjustment. The Hunt for Gollum was initially announced in 2023, with Warner Bros. initially targeting a 2026 release. However, the studio has now revised the timeline, pushing the film's premiere to 2027. This delay is intended to provide the production team with ample time for thorough development and principal photography, ensuring a high-quality cinematic experience for audiences.
Notably, Andy Serkis has prior directing experience, having helmed films such as Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Adding significant weight to the project is the involvement of Peter Jackson, the visionary director behind the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson will be collaborating closely with his longtime creative partners, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, on The Hunt for Gollum.
The Hunt for Gollum marks a significant milestone for the franchise as it will be the first live-action Lord of the Rings film to grace the big screen since 2014's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. While fans were treated to an animated film set in Middle-earth, The War of the Rohirrim, which was released earlier in 2024, the return to live-action storytelling in this beloved universe is a highly anticipated event.

Rohit Sharma Reveals Father's Reaction On Test Retirement: 'He Was A Little...'
Last Updated: Rohit Sharma revealed his father was a 'little disappointed' with his Test retirement. Senior India batter Rohit Sharma has revealed that his father, Gurunath, was happy but also 'a little disappointed' when he announced his Test retirement last month. Rohit explained that Gurunath has always appreciated red-ball cricket more than ODIs and T20s, and the longest format has always made him more excited — a love that has only gotten stronger seeing his son go up the ranks to the highest level of the sport. Rohit called off his Test career in the first week of May via an announcement on his Instagram story. Only hours before his decision was made public, reports came through claiming that the BCCI selectors had decided to remove him from Test captaincy ahead of the upcoming five-match series against England in the summer. 'My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with red ball, obviously," Rohit said at the launch of Cheteshwar Pujara's wife Puja Pujara's book 'The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife' in Mumbai. 'So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that's my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible," he added. Rohit revealed that his father was even happier with his cameos in Test cricket than his world-record 264 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in November 2014. 'My father worked in a transport company. Like I said, what my mom did, my father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that we could have our life. But my father always, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn't like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It's important to go out there and all that. But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s, in Test cricket used to talk to me about it in detail. So that's the kind of love he had for the game," he added. Rohit retired with 4301 runs from 67 Tests. His family was present — and in tears — when a stand named after him at the Wankhede Stadium was unveiled in a grand ceremony on May 17. First Published: June 06, 2025, 13:11 IST
