Porsche's Macan Electric is Already an Astounding Success
Porsche's latest electric SUV has reportedly been a home run, with CEO Oliver Blume stating the electric version of the Macan had a "particularly gratifying" market introduction. It's a big boost to the brand's electric sales, which otherwise fell a bit flat over the last twelve months. The newest addition to Porsche's electrified portfolio seems to be a hit, especially in the United States, although the automaker has been light on specifics.
We're barely three months into the year, but the Macan Electric is off to a very solid start. Porsche stated that the electrified Macan currently makes up over 40 percent of the brand's Macan sales in the US in 2025.
"Deliveries and incoming orders in 2025 are showing us that we're striking a chord with the electric Macan and that electromobility does indeed have an audience in North America," Blume said in a recent Q&A session. The luxury crossover's domination is largely a continuing trend from 2024, in which it outsold the gas variant almost two to one globally despite only being on sale for the last three months of the year. But, of course, there are important details to consider. Porsche discontinued the gas model in Europe in early 2024, citing cybersecurity concerns, and the Macan Electric is brand-new, whereas the gas model hasn't been significantly improved upon since 2023.
Porsche's other fully electric model, the Taycan, isn't faring as well. Sales of Porsche's original EV dipped 49 percent in 2024, and we don't have any reason to think that's changed early on in 2025. For 2024, Porsche sold just 20,836 examples of the Taycan, representing just six percent of the brand's total sales of 310,718 units. Despite the challenges, the Macan Electric seems to be sending a strong positive signal to Blume and others in Stuttgart, with the CEO stating that the automaker is "...very optimistic that we will be just as successful with the future electric Cayenne in North America. Especially in California."
He also casually revealed that the EV Cayenne will make its debut somewhere on the West Coast of the US later this year. Blume also stated that 27 percent of new Porsches sold globally in 2024 were electrified. That figure counts hybrids and full EVs, and marks an increase over the previous year. For 2025, the automaker hopes its electrified offerings will account for between 33 and 35 percent of total sales, with at least 20 percent of overall sales being fully electrified vehicles. Looks like the Macan Electric may need to do a lot of the heavy lifting.
The Macan Electric is a necessary addition to Porsche's lineup, and a pit stop for the brand on its way to more widespread electrification. Thanks to the hype a new model brings—and what has largely been a warm critical reception—the Macan Electric is elevating Porsche's status in the electric world. But there's still a lot of work ahead for the brand to achieve its goals for 2025, and we look forward to seeing what the famed German automaker has in store.

The 1.9 kilowatt-hour battery is mounted in the front/middle of the car, aiding weight distribution. And the hybrid drive means the entire engine accessory drive is gone, which allowed Porsche to move the engine 4.3 inches lower than before—a huge change. Sure, hybrid may be a dirty word for enthusiasts, but the 992.2 GTS challenged my notions of a hybrid in this latest video. California Police Hit Speeding Porsches With 34 Tickets In One Stop
Read the full story on The Auto Wire California Highway Patrol sure is busy these days, with an officer stopping two speeding Porsches, giving out 34 tickets between them. That might sound excessive, but CHP was so proud of what its officer did, the law enforcement agency posted pictures on its social media to CHP, the two Porsche 911s were speeding through a construction zone in Santa Curz County. We don't know how fast they were going because CHP apparently didn't find that relevant to post, but it might help us understand how two drivers could get 34 citations in a single traffic stop. However, if you zoom in on the pile of tickets, you can see the top one says at least one of the Porsches was going 78 mph in a 55 mph zone. That's not criminal in California. For speeding to turn into a felony, the driver needs to be doing over 100 mph or doubling the posted speed limit. But the CHP officer found plenty of other violations to hit both Porsche drivers with. We're also a little surprised if CHP is handing out that many tickets the cars weren't seized. After all, citations are a great source of revenue for law enforcement, but let's be honest, impounding vehicles is an even more lucrative way to shake down the citizenry. In a separate incident a few days before, CHP once again on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County nailed five Corvettes at once for speeding. At least one of them was going over 65 mph in a 55 mph zone. The law enforcement agency was very proud of this other multi-vehicle stop. If you're living in or traveling through Santa Cruz County, just beware CHP is patrolling Highway 1 heavily and is eager to hand out citations. Tested: The 2025 Porsche Macan Turbo Electric Does Its Badge Justice
Getting into the aforementioned launch control is relatively easy. As our test driver explains, "Select either Sport or Sport Plus driving mode, hold the brake pedal down, mash the throttle, wait for the launch control message to appear on the dash and let it fly. Doing that shaves about half a second off the already fast time, and the Macan Turbo picks up even more steam." Our tester adds, "Other EVs can go quicker still, but the Macan's compact dimensions and general lack of theater make the speed just a bit more shocking. Even with all this power, all-wheel drive and our test car's super-sticky tires, traction was never an issue; the Macan Turbo simply goes. Power is wonderfully linear and never seems to taper off considerably, even over 100 mph. Unlike the Porsche Taycan, which uses a two-speed gearbox, the Macan Turbo sticks with the more conventional (for an EV) single-speed unit." Tires make a big difference Our test vehicle was equipped with the optional "Performance Summer Tires for 22-inch wheels" option, which in our case were Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires with a ridiculously low treadwear rating of 80. This number refers to the tire's expected durability, or how long it will last. The higher the number, the longer it should last. For context, a common treadwear for an SUV is usually over 500, whereas an ultra-high-performance summer tire, like a Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, is 200. The Macan's tires are 80, meaning they should last less than half as long as those Michelins, especially if you use them as their manufacturer intended. In short, these tires are sticky and deliver a ton of grip.
