Volkswagen to restore "magic bus" that survived Palisades Fire

CBS News04-07-2025
Volkswagen of America is restoring the VW bus that miraculously survived the Palisades Fire in January and will hopefully get it back on the road by the end of the year.
The long blue bus became a symbol of resilience during the wildfire after a photo of it seemingly unscathed while everything around it burned spread through social media.
Gunnar Wynarski is part of the Volkswagen team restoring the bus after the image caught the attention of the automaker's staff in Oxnard. He said the classic bus was in worse condition than everyone thought when he finally got to see it up close.
"The car looked pretty cool from the driver's side, which was shown in the picture," Wynarski said. "Unfortunately, you couldn't tell the damage, like melted plastic, paint chipping away on the side that was close to the fire. You also have a busted front window, the paint on the roof is really burned off until the bare metal. Inside of the car, you still have all the ashes. It still smells like a fire."
Volkswagen tracked down the owner, Megan Weinraub, and promised they would restore it to its pre-fire condition if they could. While Weinraub calls her 1977 microbus "Azul," it became known as the "Magic bus" on social media.
"I was lucky and grateful to have the opportunity for them to restore it because I wouldn't have been able to restore it myself," she said.
The team plans to take the bus apart, strip it down and put it back together with a fresh coat of paint.
"All the devastation, all the fire, all the damage, so many things got lost, that are gone forever," Wynarski said. "It was really nice to see this car and it felt it gives some kind of hope."
Weinraub said she believes her bus became a symbol of hope during a difficult time and can't wait to get Azul back on the road.
"I'm excited to have it back," she said. "Where I live now, there are so many VW buses. It will be cool to drive it around town."

Whatever Happened To The Affordable New Car?

New vehicle prices are showing no end to their meteoric rise, with the average manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) now standing at over $51,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. That represents a 2.3% boost over the past year and is well over $10,000 more than the average car cost in 2020. And there's still no telling how much new-vehicle prices will increase moving forward with President Trump's tariffs being levied on imported cars, steel and components. Aside from inflation and changing market forces, today's stratospheric new-vehicle prices can be attributed to how they're being equipped. The days are long gone since an 'economy car' meant one that came with manual locks, roll-up windows and just an AM/FM radio. Today it's tough to find a given model on a dealer's lot that isn't loaded with profit-padding perks that were until only recently limited to top-shelf luxury cars. With the Kia Rio and Mitsubishi Mirage having left the U.S. market the number of cars that start at less than $20,000 is down to just one, the Nissan Versa at $17,190, though one would be hard-pressed to find a base model with a manual transmission in a given dealer's inventory. What's more, Cars Commerce reports that the number of new vehicles selling for under $30,000 is now down to 13.6% of the market as compared to 38% in pre-pandemic 2019. And since 92% of the lowest-stickered vehicles are imported, there's likely to be even fewer sub-$30,000 models up for grabs in a tariff-tempered economy. If the Future Attribute Demand Study (FADS) conducted by the research firm AutoPacific is any indication, automakers may need to return to the days of basic transportation by building more models and trims that eschew some flashier new-vehicle features for the sake of maintaining more-reasonable MSRPs. The company surveyed over 14,000 new vehicle intenders to gauge their interest in more than 160 current automotive features and found that shoppers looking to spend no more than $35,000 on a new vehicle are less likely to demand widely offered upscale features than more affluent buyers. 'Front wheel drive, base stereos, cloth seats with various manual adjustment, and analog gauges are 'in,' for these more frugal shoppers,' says Robby DeGraff, AutoPacific's manager of product and consumer insights, 'so the array of standard equipment found on entry- and mid-level trims of today's popular vehicles within the $25,000 to $35,000 price range may need to be reexamined as consumers tighten their belts in the face of economic uncertainty.' The study determined that more price-conscious consumers remain open to consider a conventionally powered sedan that sticks close to the basics, with cloth upholstery, manual seat adjustments, an analog gauge cluster and easy-to-use physical buttons and dials. They say they can do without navigation, elaborate interactive displays and nearly-autonomous driving features. Those who can afford more than $35,000 say they favor more-fanciful amenities like driver profile settings, a household 110v outlet, and rear-window sunshades. On the other hand, shoppers in both price ranges said they items like want wireless charging pads, heated and ventilated front seats and potentially life-saving active safety features like automatic emergency front and rear braking and lane- change assist. The least sought-after features among both groups include premium-branded audio systems, head-up displays and subscription-based immersive services. While market demands may trigger a renaissance of more basically-equipped new cars, trucks and SUVs for the sake of cash-strapped buyers, don't expect to see crank-up windows, front bench seats, cigarette lighters or steering-column shifters returning to the market any time soon. In the meantime, here's a list of the new cars and SUVs for 2025 that can still be found starting for less than $25,000, not including the destination charge, taxes, fees and options:

Dave Ramsey Caller Made The Mistake Of Co-Signing A $60,000 Car Loan. Now His Brother-In-Law Is Off To Jail And He's Paying For It

A recent episode of 'The Ramsey Show' featured a caller named Frank from Charleston, South Carolina, who shared a financial mistake that quickly spiraled out of control. $62,000 Car Loan Frank said he co-signed on a $62,000 loan for a brand-new Chrysler 300 after his brother-in-law came to him with $20,000 for a down payment and asked for help. 'He's just a big dumb animal, and I love him dearly,' Frank explained. 'He came to me and said, 'Hey, I got 20 grand... but I need help.'' Frank agreed to co-sign despite knowing better. 'All I can hear in the background when I got done doing this is Dave saying... 'One who signs debt for another is stupid.'' Don't Miss: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — $100k+ in investable assets? – no cost, no obligation. Now Frank is on the hook for a car payment of $1,100 a month. And things got worse fast: 'He's going away for a very long time on a vacation. An unwanted vacation,' Frank said, confirming that his brother-in-law is headed to prison. To make matters worse, the car is already about $12,000 underwater. Frank said he could sell it for around $50,000 in a private party sale, but the current loan buyout is $62,000. On top of that, the car is located in Arizona, while Frank lives in South Carolina. He admitted he's $5,200 behind on payments, and repossession is now a real risk. Co-host George Kamel warned him that it's already too late: 'You already did it, my friend... they're going to sell it at auction for like 15 grand and you're still going to owe the difference.' You can Frank's wife, who advised him not to cosign in the first place, now refuses to help financially. 'My wife won't give it to me,' Frank said about the money needed to catch up on payments. Kamel chimed in, 'You might as well live in this car at this point.' Despite all this, Frank still doesn't have enough cash on hand to cover the gap after selling the car. He said he has around $10,000 to $12,000 in liquid savings and a few upcoming real estate closings that might help. He's also scheduled a meeting with his credit union to try to get a personal loan. Kamel urged him to move quickly: 'Get current as fast as possible. Sell it as fast as possible.'When asked how long ago he co-signed, Frank said it was about a year ago. Since then, he's been trying to get out of the deal. 'He was like, 'I'll get it in someone else's name... I'll get you off this in six months, Frank. No worries.'' Kamel perhaps summed it up best with this big lesson: 'If a sketchy lender doesn't trust you to give you a loan, maybe you shouldn't trust that person. The number one reason I don't cosign for anyone, I don't know if they're going to be a future criminal.' At the end of the call, the Ramsey team emphasized the most important takeaway: Never co-sign, not even for family. As Frank put it, 'I'm writing that on the back of my truck right there. Don't sign for anyone.' Read Next: Warren Buffett once said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die."
