Gill returns to India's T20 squad for Asia Cup

Kuwait Timesa day ago
MUMBAI: Test skipper Shubman Gill was on Tuesday named in India's T20 squad for next month's Asia Cup cricket tournament after being left out of three previous series in the shortest format. Gill, 25, returned to the 15-man squad as deputy to skipper Suryakumar Yadav, thanks to the stellar role he played with the bat in the recent Test series against England.
The top-order batsman scored 754 runs as India's relatively young squad fought from behind to square the five-match series 2-2. The eight-nation Asia Cup will be the first major event in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India in February and March.
'We obviously see some leadership qualities in him (Gill),' chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said in Mumbai. 'His form in England... exceeded our expectations which is a great sign when there's so much pressure as captain.'
Suryakumar said he was happy to have Gill in the squad as he did not get too many opportunities in the past. The Asia Cup will begin on September 9 with defending champions India set to face hosts United Arab Emirates a day later in Dubai in the eight-nation tournament.
India and arch-rivals Pakistan have been clubbed in Group A and clash on September 14. Gill, who was named Test skipper after the retirement of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli earlier this year, last played a T20 international in July 2024.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah also made a comeback to the T20 ranks after opting out of two matches in England to manage his workload. Bumrah's last T20 outing was India's World Cup title win over South Africa at Barbados in June 2024.
Kohli and Rohit quit T20 internationals after the triumph. Bumrah will be part of the pace attack alongside left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav lead the spin charge.
Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill (vice-capt), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh. — AFP

Al-Adwani: Academic commitments hinder the preparation of national handball teams

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 20: Kuwait Handball Association Secretary, Qaed Al-Adwani, stressed that academic commitments remain one of the biggest challenges facing the preparation of the national handball teams. 'When preparing our national teams for international competitions, we face many obstacles — the most significant being academic responsibilities. These prevent players from maintaining regular training schedules and, in some cases, even stop top talents from joining the national team in major tournaments,' Al-Adwani explained. He pointed to the U-19 national team's participation in the recent World Championship in Cairo as a clear example. The squad had only 18 to 20 days of preparation — far less than other teams, which train year-round. 'Despite the short preparation, our players still delivered an impressive performance at the World Cup, thanks to the efforts of the coaching and administrative staff,' he added. Al-Adwani called on the relevant authorities to cooperate with sports federations, particularly in matters related to academics, to ease the challenges players face and ensure Kuwait is represented on the international stage in a way that reflects its stature. Meanwhile, Kuwait's U-17 national team continues its local training camp ahead of the Asian Championship — the qualifiers for the Junior World Cup in Morocco — which will kick off in Jordan on September 15 under Croatian coach Ivan and his Kuwaiti assistant Khaled Al-Mulla. On a separate note, handball referees are also preparing for the 2025-2026 season with daily training sessions and theoretical seminars. Referees Committee Chairman Ahmed Al-Mutawa highlighted that recent updates to local and international officiating regulations require practice and application to ensure referees perform at the highest level on the court.

Thompson out of sprint showdown with Lyles in Lausanne

CHORZOW: Jamaica's Kishane Thompson celebrates after setting a meeting record and winning the men's 100m final event of the Silesia Diamond League athletics meeting in the Stadion Slaski in Chorzow, Poland. – AFP CHORZOW: Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson will not run in the 100 metres at the Lausanne Diamond League on Wednesday, with media reports citing shin discomfort as the reason for the Jamaican's absence. Thompson won the much-anticipated rematch with Noah Lyles at Saturday's Diamond League meeting in Silesia, after the American beat Thompson by five thousandths of a second at last year's Olympic final, but there will be no repeat showdown in Switzerland. Saturday's race was the pair's first meeting since the Paris final, with Lyles' season delayed by an ankle injury. Thompson came out on top in a time of 9.87 seconds, with the American posting his best time of the season, coming second in 9.90. Thompson is unlikely to run again before the world championships in Tokyo in September. He is currently the man to beat after clocking 9.75 at the Jamaican championships in June. Lyles will have another Jamaican rival to contend with in Lausanne, facing Oblique Seville who beat the American when Lyles made his first 100m appearance of the season at the London Diamond League meet in July. Another Jamaican, world champion Shericka Jackson, is also absent from the women's 200 metres starting list in Lausanne. Jackson posted a season's best time of 22.17 seconds in Silesia on Saturday to win the 200m. – Reuters

Injured Springboks captain Kolisi out for four weeks

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa captain and flanker Siya Kolisi will be sidelined for four weeks due to a knee injury suffered in a shock loss to Australia at the weekend, coach Rassie Erasmus said on Monday. The injury occurred early in the second half of a 38-22 defeat in Johannesburg last Saturday in a Rugby Championship first round match. Kolisi will not only miss another Test against the Wallabies, on Saturday in Cape Town, but is also likely to be sidelined for the Springboks' two away matches against arch-rivals New Zealand next month. Erasmus said three other starters in Johannesburg - wings Edwill van der Merwe (ankle) and Kurt-Lee Arendse (knee) and flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit (concussion) - will also miss the Cape Town Test. In the absence of Kolisi, outside centre Jesse Kriel will take over as captain of a team that slipped from first to third behind New Zealand and Ireland in the world rankings after the shock defeat. South Africa built a 22-point lead within 18 minutes, then failed to score again while Australia crossed the tryline six times for a first victory in Johannesburg since 1963. 'Obviously, everyone is ashamed, no one is proud of themselves,' Erasmus told a press conference in Cape Town. 'It only strengthens our cohesion and our desire to do well. You do not learn anything from a match like that - when you see what we sometimes handed them on a plate.' Australia have also been hit by injuries with wing Dylan Pietsch (broken jaw) and prop James Slipper (concussion) flying home after the Ellis Park Test. Coach Joe Schmidt has called up three replacements, wing-centre Filipo Daugunu, centre Hamish Stewart and prop Rhys van Nek, as cover. The Wallabies hope captain and No 8 Harry Wilson, who scored two tries in Johannesburg before limping off injured, will be fit for Cape Town. — AFP
