Paisley people celebrate 30 years of community spirit with King's Award
The people of Ferguslie have marked the 30-year anniversary of the Tannahill Centre with royal recognition – just as they did in 1995.
The centre on Paisley's Blackstoun Road – which has become a beacon of community empowerment – was formally opened on July 5, 1995, by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip.
Now, three decades later, their son has bestowed those who dedicate their time to the centre's many projects with the King's Award for Voluntary Service – the highest honour a voluntary group can receive in the UK.
Earlier this month, King Charles also welcomed two Tannahill stalwarts, Mandy Chappell and Elaine Carter, to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, for his summer garden party.
It has a wonderful moment for Elaine, who still has great memories of the Queen opening the centre 30 years ago.
She said: 'The biggest achievement of the Tannahill Centre is the way it has supported so many volunteer organisations to get off the ground in Ferguslie.
'And that volunteer spirit is what makes Ferguslie what it is; the willingness to help your neighbour and your community.
'The King's Award was recognition of that and a thank you to all the volunteers over the years who have worked hard to make a difference.
'There was great fan fare when the Queen and Prince Phillip came in 1995 and King Charles came with them when they visited in 1994 after the floods so it was nice to cap this year off with a royal award.'
Elaine was chosen to attend the garden party on behalf of the Tannahill volunteers as a former employee and long-time volunteer with Ferguslie Seniors.
Her companion Mandy has also been a long-serving member of the influential Darkwood Crew.
It is a group established to look after the environment and green spaces in Ferguslie but has morphed into an organisation that also tackles food insecurity and social isolation.
And it is among more than a dozen groups and charities which use the Tannahill Centre as a hub to bring about positive change.
The Tannahill Events Team, Ferguslie Community Choir, Own Yer Bike, No Substitute For Life Mens Group, Youth Voice, Ferguslie Youth Club, Ferguslie Community Church, Pachedu, Ferguslie Seniors, Ferguslie Women's Group and Community Together have all found a home in the building at various points in time.
Terry McTernan, former chairman of Ferguslie Park Community Council and leading figure in the Darkwood Crew, said the role of the Tannahill Centre in the recent rejuvenation in Ferguslie cannot be understated.
Terry, who now works as the volunteer coordinator at the centre, said: 'This award helps capture the partnership working and anchor-type organisation that exists at the Tannahill Centre.
'Certainly, since the pandemic, the Tannahill Centre has worked in partnership with the likes of Ferguslie Seniors, Darkwood Crew, No Substitute for Life Men's Mental Health, so there's a whole caboodle of them and the Tannahill Centre has been happy to showcase them.
'Ferguslie Park is a unique community in terms of volunteering and it's bred into our culture, so it's lovely to have that recognised by the King in this 30th anniversary year.'
The birthday year has been celebrated with a series of events at the Tannahill Centre, with a party, the presentation of the King's Award for Voluntary Service by the Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, Colonel Peter McCarthy and the royal garden party.
Paul Irwin, community development manager of the Tannahill Centre, said: 'Both Mandy and Elaine are tireless champions for our community. Whether it is addressing isolation, promoting dignity or helping Ferguslie flourish – they embody the very best of us.
'This award belongs to every volunteer, past and present, who has put in hours of selfless dedication to make our centre a safe, welcoming, and inspiring place for everyone.
'This includes all of the volunteer-led groups that have established themselves over the years, who do so much to directly address issues within the area.'
Paul added: 'The hard work and resilience of all Ferguslie volunteers have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many and we couldn't be prouder of what we've achieved together.'

King Charles will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on Friday with a message paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of military personnel in the second world war who fought and died in the Pacific and far east, saying they will never be forgotten. In an address, Charles will reflect on the horrors experienced by prisoners of war and civilians of occupied lands in the region 'whose suffering reminds us that war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life'. On Friday evening, hundreds of buildings across the country will be lit up to mark VJ 80 as part of commemoration events planned throughout the UK. In his six-minute speech, echoing the historic broadcast by his grandfather, George VI, Charles will describe how the heroes of VJ Day 'gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected', with victory made possible by close collaboration between nations 'across vast distances, faiths and cultural divides'. He will say this demonstrated how 'in times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear but the arms you link', and will add the service and sacrifice of veterans and those who lost their lives fighting in the conflict 'shall never be forgotten'. Friday's televised service, broadcast live by the BBC, will pay tribute to all those who served in the Asia-Pacific theatre, including Burma Star recipients, British Indian army veterans, former prisoners of war, and those who fought in pivotal battles including Kohima and Imphal in India. Charles, Queen Camilla and other senior figures will leave floral tributes during the service, which will be hosted by the Royal British Legion in partnership with the government. LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Princess Anne, the late Queen Elizabeth's only daughter and a former Olympic equestrian, turns 75 on Friday, with little fanfare planned in keeping with the royal's disdain for making a fuss. To mark the occasion, Buckingham Palace is releasing a new photograph of the horse-loving princess, who is often credited with being the hardest-working member of the British royal family. Buckingham Palace makes embarrassing error about Princess Anne in fact list to celebrate hardworking royal's 75th bday
FALSEHOODS surrounding Princess Anne have mistakenly been issued by Buckingham Palace in celebration of the royal's 75th birthday. An article was published on the official royal website to mark King Charles's sister's special occasion on Friday. 10 It was headlined 75 facts about the Princess Royal, with a list of trivia that followed. But number 14 revealed Princess Anne had two stepchildren from her second marriage to Sir Timothy Laurence, called Tom and Amy Laurence. In reality, the Princess Royal was Sir Tim's first wife when they tied the knot in 1992 - and he did not have any kids. Meanwhile Anne has a son, Peter Phillips, and a daughter, Zara Tindall, with her first husband Mark Phillips. Mark and Anne, who were married for 19 years, divorced the same year she wed Sir Tom. The falsehood was taken down from the website shortly after royal fans were quick to point it out. It's not known exactly where the information came from, although the same error was published by Woman & Home magazine a few years ago. There's speculation whoever wrote the royal website article may have used AI, which found the info from this 2023 piece. A palace source told the Daily Mail: "The facts were checked, and that one was a late addition, sourced from a reputable publication online, which unfortunately wasn't put back through the checking process. "There was no AI sourcing on our part." Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment. Meanwhile, other facts published in the list ranged from the royal's birth to memorable public engagements. "Her Royal Highness was born Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise at Clarence House on 15 August 1950, VJ Day, at 11:50 am," read one fact. Royal fans may have been intrigued to learn Princess Anne was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by the President of Zambia in 1990. The Princess was also the first in the Firm to appear on a TV quiz, BBC's A Question of Sport. And, the first to hold an HGV licence - seeing her get behind the wheel of a double-decker London bus and a police vehicle. She was also the first member of the British Royal Family to compete in an Olympic Games, when she entered as part of the British Equestrian team at the 1976 Montreal Games, the list revealed. Other facts included her being the Patron of the Scottish Rugby Union. Sister to the king, she set to spend her birthday next month as she always does - sailing with her husband around Scotland for just ten days. After this brief period she will return to her work as a senior member of the royal family. This comes royal fans have also theorised hard-working Anne could now prove vital in Harry and Charles' peace talks. The Princess Royal is thought to have some useful advice to offer Harry on life as a "spare" in the Royal Family. A source close to the Royal Family told The Times that Anne could offer some words of wisdom to her nephew. The source said: "She often talked about how, as children, she was treated so differently from Charles. "She was second to him and kicked further down the line of succession as a woman, but she forged her own path. "In her twenties she was bolshy and upset about a lot of things, but she came through that. "He should talk to her about her experiences. She is shrewd. She could tell him a lot about what she went through.' Anne reportedly doesn't plan to retire until her tenth decade, following in Prince Phillip's footsteps. A dutiful and hard working member of the Royal Family, Anne overcame an injury just last year and returned to her duties just a few weeks later. The Princess Royal was admitted to intensive care last June with head injuries and a concussion after reportedly being kicked in the head by a horse at her Gatacombe Park estate in Gloucestershire. She was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for tests and treatment before returning to her duties that July. Anne has been almost unstoppable for more than seven decades now, working nearly without pause. She is reportedly notorious among her aides for resisting attempts to create downtime for her.
