Reports: Leverkusen's Xhaka nears Sunderland move
According to multiple reports on Monday the Swiss international must however complete such a move by the end of the month on Thursday.
"There will be a decision this week. Granit's side knows about the conditions under which a transfer is possible. If that doesn't happen he will stay," Leverkusen sporting managing director Simon Rolfes was quoted as saying.
Xhaka played in England at Arsenal for seven years 2016-2023 before joining Leverkusen where he has a contract until 2028. He helped them win a first Bundesliga title and the German Cup in the memorable 2023-24 campaign in which the team's only defeat came in the Europa League final against Atalanta.
Sunderland are said to be ready to meet Leverkusen's asking price, and Leverkusen are willing to let him go although new coach Erik ten Hag doesn't want to lose him.
"This club has already let three important players go. We will not give up more players, that is not possible. It would neglect the structure and the culture of the squad," ten Hag said.
Playmaker Florian Wirtz and full back Jeremie Frimpong have left for Liverpool, and centre back Jonathan Tah has joined Bayern Munich. In addition, ten Hag has replaced Xabi Alonso who is now in charge at Real Madrid.
The future of defenders Piero Hincapie and Alejandro Grimaldo, midfielder Exequiel Palacios and forward Victor Boniface is also unclear. Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky is said to join French league side Monaco, with newly signed Mark Flekken to take his place.

Man City open to Echeverri's loan to Roma
Roma continue to work on Claudio Echeverri's signing. The Manchester City talent appears to be Roma's top priority at the moment. According to Paolo Assogna's report on Manà Manà Sport Roma, an intermediary is leaving for London specifically to finalize the deal that would bring the Argentine to the Giallorossi. The financial issue remains: the English club is asking for a high fee even for the loan deal, and the deal remains complicated. Manchester City, however, seem to have opened to the idea of loaning the player to Roma.

Excelsior Eredivisie 2025/2026 Preview
Overview: Excelsior bounced straight back after their relegation from the Eredivisie at the end of the 2023/2024 season. The side were led by young Dutch head coach Ruben den Uil in his first season as the number one, winning 24 of their 41 matches and finishing second behind Volendam. Over the past decade the Rotterdam based side have always flirted with Eredivisie relegation. Can den Uil keep Excelsior above water this time around? Transfers in: Do-Young Yoon (Brighton, loan), Lewis Schouten (AZ, loan), Stijn van Gassel (NEC), Adam Carlen (IFK Goteborg), Transfers out: Siem de Moes (free), Serano Seymor (Khorfakkan), Pascal Kuiper (Sparta Rotterdam), Lance Duijvestijn (Sparta Rotterdam), Oscar Uddenas (Osters) Key player: Derensili Sanches Fernandes With the sides key man from last year, Duijvestijn, having joined city rivals Sparta, the club will need someone else to step up up top. Sanches Fernandes had a fantastic season, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in 34 matches for Excelsior. The 24-year-old winger struggled during the 2023/2024 Eredivisie season, but this year Excelsior will hope he can step up after his strong second tier campaign. Young player to watch: Lewis Schouten That AZ loaned Schouten to Excelsior, rather than keep him with their second team in the second tier, shows that they clearly believe he is going to get valuable game time. Excelsior will be expected to face a relegation battle and will need them to show the defensive solidity of last season. The 21-year-old may well have to be a part of that defence this season. Transfer window needs: The side could really do with another goal scorer. They are light in goals up front and need to replace Duijvestijn in this area. If Excelsior can do that, they may have a chance of avoiding relegation. However, at the moment, the lack of goals in the squad is a real concern. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

'A few will leave'
Norwich City boss Liam Manning is expecting players to leave the club before the transfer window closes at the start of next month. The Canaries have added 10 players to their first-team squad over the summer while selling last season's top scorer, Borja Sainz, to Porto. As they prepare for Saturday's opening Championship match of the season against Millwall (15:00 BST), Manning admits players will have to leave the club. "It's not always in our control but naturally we're a bit heavy," the head coach told BBC Radio Norfolk. "We've been able to do some real productive work with the help of the owners to bring in what we have - the consequence is we've got a few too many and I'm sure in the coming weeks there'll be a few who will leave." Norwich finished their pre-season programme with a 2-0 win over Dutch side NAC Breda on Saturday with the notable absences of experienced duo Shane Duffy and Anis Ben Slimane. Defender Duffy missed only one league game last season while midfielder Slimane made 25 starts in the Championship. "Everybody wants to play football and if that's not happening or not likely here, people want to pursue alternative options," Manning added. "Until anything definite happens we'll keep working with them, keep pushing them - their attitude has been top in training and we'll see how that plays out."
